NFT: Fantasy Football Keeper Discussion

too early?

My league on July 1 has an informal and optional reveal of your keepers. Most people participate and tell you what they're thinking, some smoke screens, but mostly you can tell who people should keep.

Our rules are we can keep 2 players and you get to keep the player for the round where you drafted them (in the first year you keep them) and it halves very subsequent year. So for example in 2014 I took Odell Beckham in the 8th round, I kept him in 2015 for an 8th round pick, 2016 for a 4th and could keep him in 2017 for a 2nd, once he reaches a 1st he'll always be a 1st unless he's re-drafted). I traded him week 10 or so last year so that is just a hypothetical.

Waiver picks ups cost an 8th round pick if you want to keep them. Midway through the season my team was awful so I began trading players and accumulating picks.

League is ppr, and 6pt per passing TD, bonuses for long TD's (catch, pass or run), all else typical.

My keepers I'm considering are:

Jordan Howard (8th round pick)*
Michal Thomas (10th round pick)*
Tyreek Hill (8th round pick)
Dak Prescott (14th round pick)
Sammy Watkins (8th round pick)
Keenan Allen (8th round pick)
Sterling Shepard (7th round pick)

Seems like a no-brainer right? Howard and Thomas? We get points for returns too so I was really hoping to find a way to keep Hill. Without Maclin especially I feel like Hill is going to get a ton of looks in that offense. So do I keep Thomas and Hill and try and re-draft Howard? normally a rookie (or bad) QB would make me nervous (Howard), but he did fine last year in that same situation.

I also have two first round picks and two second round picks.

My first 1st round pick could be as high as #1 and as low as #4 (we have a lottery to avoid tanking).

Agreed.

No brainer.
Id Keep Thomas and Hill
Young Elijah : 6/15/2017 10:02 am : link
You have 2 featured WRs on pass heavy teams, albeit KC is the short passing game. Plus the return points for hill.

With both of your first round picks, if you walk away with Zeke/DJ/Bell and lets say Rodgers later in the first - I think it would be the perfect core for a SB run.
I don't think Hill will be returning kicks this season.
Keith : 6/15/2017 10:04 am : link
He's out on kick returns and I think they'll use him like DJax and only put him on punt returns when necessary. He's not a bad option though.
I certainly wouldn't call KC a pass heavy team.
Keith : 6/15/2017 10:07 am : link
They are in the bottom 3rd in the league in attempts and yards and in the bottom half in completions. They are in the top half in rushes and rushing yards.
what's the point of an early optional and informal...
Mike in St. Louis : 6/15/2017 10:08 am : link
keeper list? to stir up trades?
Jordan Howard was a star last year.
Keith : 6/15/2017 10:14 am : link
He burst onto the scene in week 3 and proceeded to have (7) 100 yard rushing games the rest of the season(most of the other games were just shy of 100 yards) and averaged 5.21 YPC. He's a workhorse 3 down back as well.

The main concern here is the personnel changes. No more Cutler and no more Jeffery so that could alter Howard positively or negatively.

Tyreek Hill is in a somewhat similar situation. He was a guy they used in many different ways to exploit his athleticism. Now there's no Maclin and they are going to line him up as a WR. That could help or hurt.
You have to keep Howard and Thomas
YAJ2112 : 6/15/2017 10:15 am : link
both are going in the first 2 rounds in early drafts so far this year

yes, that's exactly it, we also have a rules review around that time. We discuss various rule change proposals. Some of them this year are: expanding the number of keepers, adding a mandatory TE (right now we do not have to have a TE), making it a 2 QB league (one guy has been pushing this forever - no way I'd do that in a 12-team league) and keepers/trades comes up around this time too.

The keeper conversation also clues you in to who is an idiot. a couple years ago the guy with the #1 overall pick said he was keeping Tom Brady with his 1st round pick. I not being a hard ass like others in the league explained to him you have the #1 pick, you can keep two other players in later rounds and still redraft Brady, but he didn't get it and I didn't push any further than that), so he kept Brady.

It generates discussion, makes sure no dropouts, and we start nailing down a draft date. We draft in person, try and find 12 dudes who can all meet at the same day/time in late August/early September.

Keepers for us lock in August 1 and can only change in the event of long-term injury.

Howard is safe for 300+ touches
giantsfan44ab : 6/15/2017 1:06 pm : link
I like hill a lot, I'd be looking at him 2nd, 3rd round in a 10 team, non ppr, non redraft league. I think he can put up some ODB type shit. He should be option #1, 2 and 3 for KC.

Well, they do still have Kelce who's a top 3 TE. And Alex Smith is till the king of the dump-off. I can see 80-1200-10 (total yds), but not sure I'd put Hill in Beckham's class (that's Beckham's worst case).
So my dilemma
pjcas18 : 6/15/2017 1:20 pm : link
if we all agree Howard is a no-brainer is between Michael Thomas in an offense without Brandin Cooks after a monster rookie year or Tyreek Hill.

it's a ppr league if that matters.

I think it's clearly Michael Thomas, but Hill, if he still handles returns could be sneaky value.

Some forget Hill also had over 250 rushing yards and 3 TD's. Not to mention his 3 returns TD's.

But Thomas had 92, 1137 and 9 as a rookie with a far better QB.

Don't need to decide today, just hope all three are healthy when I need to decide.

It's also Thomas as a 10th round pick vs. Hill as an 8th - but that's kind of minor.

It's Thomas for me, and I don't think it's that close
just to add
YAJ2112 : 6/15/2017 1:37 pm : link
early ADP data has Thomas going at 15 and Hill at 50
Unfortunately...
EricJ : 6/15/2017 1:46 pm : link
both Howard and Hill are in conflict due to them both being tied to the 8th round. So, it will have to be Howard and Thomas.

Not sure about pj's league, but most leagues just make you give up a round above for the 2nd guy - ie you would lose your 7th/8th if you kept 2 8th round guys.

arcarsenal : 6/15/2017 1:50 pm : link
There was a point last year where I could have added Howard and saved my season and passed. It still bothers me.

So does having the best team in my main league and losing to my idiot friend who barely knows shit about football not once, not twice, but three times (incl. playoffs)

A whole new season of frustration will be here before I know it!
Howard's ADP is 16
YAJ2112 : 6/15/2017 1:55 pm : link
arc - I only got Howard in one league, and my team didn't win a game after I picked him up. My only consolation is that it's a keeper league, so I'll be hoping he can be as productive for the full season.
.
arcarsenal : 6/15/2017 1:57 pm : link
I feel like... %0.01 better now. Maybe he wouldn't have made enough of a difference for it to matter.

I wrecked my season in that league before it started by trading up for Odell anyway. It wound up not being worth it. Didn't help that I took Charles in the 3rd rd and lost Woodhead in Week 2. I was digging for RB's all year right off the bat.

No more draft pick trades for me!
Im also in the Thomas over Hill camp
Keith : 6/15/2017 2:10 pm : link
by a wide margin. Thomas would be my first choice out of that group. Howard slightly ahead of Hill.
Howard and Thomas
SimpleMan : 6/15/2017 3:40 pm : link
is a no brainer. Hill is good but Thomas is about to be the #1 in a high-octane passing offense. Brees loves him. Don't overthink this.

exactly what we do.
I'm in a similar conundrum
MadPlaid : 6/15/2017 4:06 pm : link
I am in a keeper league, and I am allowed to keep three players while sacrificing draft picks. As of right now, I'm keeping Michael Thomas for a 6th round pick, and Spencer Ware for a 5th. Its the last selection that has me worried. My choices are:

Stefon Diggs
Willie Snead
Kenneth Dixon

I was planning on keeping Dixon until he was suspended for the first 4 games. He will cost me a 7th round pick. I'm almost tempted to keep him anyway, but I bet I can wait until later than the 7th round to select him.

Diggs and Snead will cost me a 4th round pick. I think a 4th round pick is to expensive a price to keep their rights.

What do you think?

Can you just keep 2? Is it ppr?

You have to think if everyone keeps 3, who is left and where would Diggs or Snead be drafted, your 4th round could really be like a 7th round after keepers if everyone keeps three so maybe think of it that way.
I really like the keeper rules in one of my leagues...
EricJ : 6/15/2017 5:00 pm : link
you can keep only guys you drafted (or traded for) but you have to give up one round better than when you drafted the guy. So, even if you continue to keep the player, each year you have to give up one round better. Eventually, it does not make sense to keep the player.

If you drafted a player in the first round, then you need to give up a #1 and a #6 to keep him the following year.

You cannot keep free agents. You cannot keep players you dropped unless you did that due to injured reserve.
pj
MadPlaid : 6/15/2017 5:06 pm : link
Thank you for the feedback. I can choose to keep three or none. It is up to me. It just seems a waste not to keep that the third one.

It is not a ppr league. Also, not everyone is likely to keep players. This league only allows you to keep late round selections. Anyone who is selected in the 9th round and on, can be kept the following 2 to 3 years depending on how late they were selected. Each subsequent year, you lose an earlier pick. In Thomas' case, he was selected in the 11th round, I lose a 6 to keep him this year, and a 4 the following year. Most of the best players will be available at the top of the draft like in normal leagues.
I think I wasn't clear
MadPlaid : 6/15/2017 5:07 pm : link
I can keep as many as 3 or as few as none.
then I wouldn't keep
pjcas18 : 6/15/2017 5:13 pm : link
Diggs or Snead for a 4th.
I'm leery of Thomas
GiantsLaw : 6/15/2017 7:20 pm : link
until he proves he can maintain his level against opposing top corners. Last year Cooks drew all the top coverage and Thomas feasted on lesser talent. I'd consider trading Thomas for a 2nd or even 3rd rd pick and keep Allen.

Just noticing this...Zeke, DJ and Bell are all likely keepers.

Thank you again. Yeah, that is the way I am leaning. Fortunately, I don't have to declare keepables until just before we draft in early September/late August. I can wait and see how things develop during the pre-season.

Best of luck to you

I need some goddamn redemption for my winless season. There is no way that would ever happen again.

It would certainly make our FF discussion threads more interesting because we'd have to be more careful of the advice we give each other.

One thing is for sure, pj will have the best defense. Baseball, football... doesn't matter. Any time I go up against him, I know my players are probably going to have a bad week.
I'll definitely

Boneman does like 30 fantasy leagues (maybe more than that - it was a crazy amount) so, what's one more?

There was something funny about T-Bone's team that year I just can't remember what it was.. I think it was that he made like 800 roster moves.
