Casey is one of 16 Beta Theta Pi brothers facing more than 850 counts in Piazza's death. He, along with Brendan Young Jr. — the chapter's president at the time of Piazza's death — is among the brothers facing more serious charges, including aggravated assault and involuntary manslaughter.
To not misconstrue my opinion here... while I think the murder vs. involuntary manslaughter distinction is necessary, I'm firmly in the group that believes these young men deserve to do time. I went to college at a Big 10 University and I'm well aware of the culture. This was pretty obviously a crime, and I almost think involuntary isn't harsh enough. This wasn't "boys will be boys" gone wrong. I've seen the hazing process first hand. It can be a constructive initiation phase for kids interested in Greek life, but anyone who's not a total sociopath knows there's a line.
But let's not act like this behavior is unique to PSU. This could have happened at any college across the country.
I went to Ohio State. I lived in a frat house my junior year (I was not in the frat). I witnessed the hazing.
This isn't a thing that ever happened. The "drinking hazing" I witnessed wasn't "9 drinks in 1 hour" stuff. It was making a pledge drink a microwaved shot of Wild Turkey or make them "sip" every time someone cursed or something. No one would ever be pushed to a truly unhealthy level like that (let alone ignored after collapsing down a flight of stairs).
Beyond that, all of the hazing consisted of things like making them carry the keg up the stairs... and then actually, you know what? We want it in the living room.... Nahhhh, I changed my mind. Back upstairs. Shit like that.
but linking this to the sex assault scandal is tenuous. Hazing deaths from binge drinking and the like have occurred at Clemson, Cornell, Baruch College and a number of others over the last ten years or so. Awful, grotesque, criminal, without question. But I don't see the tie to Sandusky and JoePa.
Maybe just the culture of tampering and fabricating evidence, willfully trying to cover something up strikes me as something that many Penn Staters seem comfortable with.
I mean hell, many of these cult members think the Sandusky thing didn't even happen! They live in their own world.
Now these kids are tampering with and fabricating evidence after a kid dies?
Happy Valley doesn't seem so happy to me.
I never really understood the allure of fraternities Â
Never felt like buying friends or using Greek letters to get chicks. Not judging, just my personal take. Having played lax at PSU made the latter easier to come by. I know you know this, but not all of us alums worshipped at the Shrine of St. Joe.
What happened to the Piazza boy could have (and has) happened elsewhere and is as reprehensible regardless of institution. And FWIW, I'd been in that Beta house for many a party back in the day. That stairwell was always an area looking for trouble when alcohol was involved.
Death by classmate. I don't care. They fuckin killed that poor kid.
Yeah, Penn State did it, not the Fraternity....get a grip. Hateful institution, I agree, but the University didn't kill the kid.
And about a dozen people should be doing jail time over this.
Death by classmate. I don't care. They fuckin killed that poor kid.

You blaming the University, not the fraternity. Every university has shitty frats and sororities. This one was the worst of the worst.
Blame the Frat not the university. I'd expect that kind of generalization from brownstain, not you.
And no, I'm not really comparing you to brownstain.

it's a national issue with fraternities. I know they do some good, but the frat mentality and hazing are a disgrace. On no planet is it ok to haze the way a lot of fraternities do. People humiliate themselves during their "pledging" or "initiation". I'll never understand why.
Hell, this has happened at MIT. So unless there is something that the administration or students have done that's out of the norm, I don't see why (for this specific incident) any animus should be directed to the university.

Actually, Penn State really dropped the hammer in the Greek system at PSU.
1. Fall 2017 rush canceled
2. Students must have at least 12 completed credit hours before they can rush.
3. Frats limited to 10 social events per semester (previously was 45).
4. No liquor at social events. No kegs at social events.
5. Beer and wine can only be served by a third-party RAMP bartender certified person at social events.
7. Hazing will likely result in suspension of chapter charter.
8. Alcohol banned from social events for the last three months of the Spring 2017 semester (these are announced back in February).
9. Regular unannounced University compliance checkers, who will have full access to every part of a frat house.
After 9 of the 81 frats violated at list some of the new regulations in March, they banned all social events for two weeks. One frat, that broke almost every new rule imposed, got a 2-year suspension of their charter.
The Penn State president said if the frats can not follow the rules, they'll kill Greek Life at Penn State.
But let's not act like this behavior is unique to PSU. This could have happened at any college across the country.
Didn't say anything about that at all.
But ruining people's lives seems to be part of the PSU culture.
I heard it's an actual major there now.
My daughter will be attending Penn State next year. Your comments are way over the top. This is not the 1st and it will not be the last school that has an issue with a frat and kids drinking too much. What the kids in that frat did was heinous. They will pay for their actions. As for Penn State, it is still a great school for kids to attend for a quality education. I know you believe your comments make you sound like a comedian. I do not condone what those kids have done but go to any college campus and tell me what you find? I did not tell my daughter where she should go or not go, this was her choice. That said come Aug. as a family We Are Penn State!

Do not worry B In AlB knows better how to handle this than the University handled the matter. His comments blaming the entire university is just ridiculous. I heard about the rule changes when we were touring the campus. Most of the kids who were there that we discussed this issue with thought the changes made sense. My own personal opinion is that freshman should not be allowed to pledge at all in any university. To me having them wait until Sophomore year where they have a full year of college under their belt would be better for everyone.

Sad how the indoctrination starts so early.
Yeah, come august, you're a family! A family that rallies around a football team so important, child sodomy and child rape over decades couldn't even knock some sense into disbanding the team on your own accord!
At Cuse they instituted a whole new set of rules for fraternities in the 1990's - very similar to what Penn State has just initiated in 2017.
Meanwhile, the PSU cult and its apologists are applauding the university for its actions and claiming that they DIDN'T allow these frats to run the insane asylum. Amazing thought process. Probably more disturbing than amazing.
But I never said there aren't bad apples at every school. As I mentioned above, Cuse implemented stringent rules for frats and sororities in the 1990s.
And I don't see any deaths at SU. But maybe you can dig up some more links in your free time.
didn't stop several kids from dying from alcohol related deaths over the past few years.
I think PSU is disgusting for their handling of the Sandusky/Paterno thing, but lets not act like they are the only school that kids doing wreckless things with alcohol.

at Cuse, I would be equally outraged and very disappointed in both the students and the university. I certainly wouldn't blindly support the parties involved based on homerism for my alma mater.
And no, it's not semantics.
Yes they did. Agreed there.

I apologize for the brownstain thing.

It took a kid dying before they instituted the rules that you now seem to agree with wholeheartedly.
Great job.
