“I think you find that Dallas, expectations are obviously ramped up, and that happens when you have a season like they did last year and rightfully so,” Romo said, via DFW’s CBS 11. “If Dallas can stay healthy, they’re going to be a tough team to beat. I’ll get into more analysis later. Right now at this point, they’ve been healthy enough to get through the offseason without anything detrimental that can really hurt you going forward. From there, it’s just about creating the culture and getting the environment right.” |
They lost 2/5 of their starting OL.
Randy Gregory is suspended for the entire year. David Irving is suspended for 4 games.
They lost a bunch of defensive starters and some of their top backups. Barry Church, Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne, Terrell McClain, JJ Wilcox & Jack Crawford. All 6 of them were in their top 14 in snaps for 2016.
They didn't do very much to replace those guys in free agency. Their free agent signings were pretty bad. They signed a bunch of guys who are below average to average.
If they win 9 games I'd be shocked.
They didn't do much to replace them. Their free agent signings were terrible.
Ha! Basically.
Basically, any team with a good QB and a reasonably healthy roster is a tough out - even with a defense as porous as Dallas's is likely to be. There's still some question about whether Prescott is actually a good QB. I think he's probably good enough, as long as Elliott and the line remain intact.
Agreed.
I think Reese realized he needed to build a team that can match up and nullify the squads in our division.
With the weapons we have on offense,even if our OLine plays the same or has marginal improvement,we should be able to move the ball downfield.
And while anything can happen,I don't see any reason why our defense should take any steps backwards. I love our chances!
Every team is "one injury or two at the same position" away from being "average" at best. Washington's offense, for example, will still be solid despite losing receivers. Philly's Wentz may improve by leaps and bounds - or NOT. Dallas may see Elliott suspended for opening day on top of their defensive suspensions; Dallas may really feel the loss of mauler Leary & RT Free retirement moreso than they realize and therefore the run game isn't as strong, etc.
The Giants must get off to a healthy, fast start if they want to win the divison from the other 3 teams. I truly believe because we have kept continuity on both sides of the ball and have peppered in weapons & blockers (B. Marshall, E. Engram, R. Ellison) where we really needed them we can do just that: punch every team in the face before they find themselves for a 5-0 start.
Romo has to be a homer, what else do we expect?
Troll away elsewhere, that's been pointed out already.

Their defense is well coached.
Of course they're tough to beat when healthy. But what NFL team isn't? The healthiest teams go farthest into the post season.
Then, it will be interesting to hear what Romo has to say...were the Cowboys to lose a few games in large part bc Dak isn't playing well, and others start talking about how Dak is no Romo

He will be a good little Cowboy, and be one of Jerruh's favorites....

What did he say exactly that merits a "you're a dipshit?"
so sick of hearing about Dallas. They are not that good - and had a terrible offseason.

Nothing. Apparently Kivorka just enjoys calling people dipshits.

Dallas is going to get rolled week 1.
If each team is at relative full health on opening night, this has all the makings of a beatdown.
Eli loves that building and Dallas is going to be marching out a patchwork secondary against him with Beckham, Marshall, SS and Engram to deal with?
Our defensive front is one of a few in the league that can win individual physical matchups along that offensive line.
Prescott comes back to earth a bit in year 2, but in all honesty, last year was never about him.
Good luck.

Dak Prescott has called the NFC East for 2017 - ( New Window )
Injuries are always an X factor and usually a big reason why teams succeed or fail.
What is going to get old is having both #1 crews with former Cowboy QB's.
Having said that - I've been doing a lot of thinking about Dallas and where they are at and I think while they take a step back for a time, they could be tough for quite a while in the future. I'm not saying I'm afraid of them or that they'll win a bunch of super bowls, but they won't likely be a 5 win team again any time too soon.
In the cap era there are only so many ways a franchise can gain an advantage. Top scouting, top coaching and a good management team, to go along with a solid strength/conditioning program are ways a team can differentiate themselves. I think Dallas has offensive and defensive coaches that are very, very good. What they accomplished last year on offense with their rookies is not done very often. What they did with the defense we all laughed about before the season was also impressive.
If they can get their cap under control enough to become players in FA they can build a very, very dangerous team imo.
I mentioned the suspensions and he minimized them outside of saying "they'll likely miss DL Irving" early; DB Carroll as well.
One notable he did mention is that the OL may not be as good this year due to the loss of Leary and Free. If they take an injury they won't have as much depth this year to overcome. He believes Elliott may be suspended for a game but not much more.
I think we match up well with Dallas, assuming we are healthy, and the added pieces on offense will be enough for us to have a balanced attack and win a road game to start 1-0. My brother says, "probably true" due to suspensions and matchup issues which he believes will exist early but improve later. Ho-Hum, we shall see how it all plays out.
How are the suspensions of 3 of your starting defenders not detrimental to their team?
Sure, he's just tossing off some words at a golf tourney but a real sharp would at the very least have been prepared with a solid line or two about the Cowboys. Instead, he said something that is essentially uninformed (see BigRicks post above for all the off season changes that Tony apparently hasn't been briefed on). I wonder if Romo will put in the work necessary to become an even credible TV color guy? It's not as easy as it looks and being Nantz's buddy won't get Romo past week one.
I think we will kick the shit out of them in Week 1 and it will be downhill from there for them.
Hell, he didn't even get into announcer booth yet...
I don't think they lose much with Free's retirement except maybe depth.
They may be in trouble at LG though, unless former first round pick Jonathan Cooper can have a career renaissance.
The guy they are really really going to miss is Barry Church. And I don't think his loss can be understated.
Losing J.J. Wilcox at the same time means that is going to hurt even more.
Byron Jones is being shifted to Safety full-time, and he's a great athlete. That will lessen the loss of Wilcox, but Jeff Heath is no Church.
If Jaylon Smith recovers and is a dominant player, which is not likely, then their defense will still be good after the early season suspensions. But I can't help but imagine what is going to happen to that secondary if they lose a guy or two. Like Scandrick, for example. They drafted a lot of corners, Jourdain Lewis, who I like, the highly regarded Chidobe Awuzie, and Marquez White.
That big investment in corners may pay off for them down the line, but it's likely a bad thing if too many rookies have significant roles in that starting lineup.
And what about Taco Charlton? If he's a real deal pass rusher, that is really going to help them.
The likelihood is that they are going to miss Church more than they realize, the rookies will go through some growing pains, and Smith is not going to be the player they drafted him to be.
But they have Elliott and Dak, and those two guys count for an awful lot.
They start the season vs 3 very tough defenses on paper right now.
I wouldn't be surprised if Dallas fans are calling for Romo to come out of retirement by the end of the first quarter of the season.

This is such an overused point. There are only two games on any team's schedule that are determined by the previous year's standings. And given the YOY volatility of NFL teams, you can typically expect at least one of those two games to not be as tough (or as easy) as expected.
I will go further, the Cowboys schedule thru October.
Giants
@Denver
@Arizona
LA Rams
Green Bay
@SF
@Washington
They will do well to be 3-4 and could well be 2-5 at the end of October. Giants will likely be 4-3 or better.
PLease NYG....do the Lord's work in 2017. You have got the ammo.
Quote:
They are going to lose to the Giants. Things could change based on injuries in the pre-season, but assuming we have no major injuries, we are winning that game. Then week 2 they have to fly to Denver and they are losing that game too. Week 3 in AZ, winnable game, but no gimmee. The Cowboys aren't taking anyone by surprise this year either. I think they will be in contention all season, but it's going to start shaky for them....Book it.

rams/9ers are the only Ws in that list ... 2.5 would be lovely
I know it is easy to say for any team and their QB but for the boys, the gameplan changed a lot from last year to this year.
Last year it was run, run, run and somehow a patchwork Marinelli defense kept them close enough where Dak rarely had to win a game.
This year, the defense has taken a huge step back personnel wise, and the boys are betting a LOT on Dak becoming a real star to help them win games when their defense gives up 30.

Limo, you could be right, but again, a few years ago their D was considered to be at or near the bottom going into the season. They won 13 games. Marinelli is a brilliant DC, imho, so I'll see their big decline on D when I see it
You've seen it every year during the Eli manning era. Boil down the Dallas romo era existence into one simple thing--- not enough defense. Then dak comes along and a good year in 2016. What did them in? Lack of Defense. They hung 30 in the playoff game.
Dallas could have a few things go right on D this season. I will allow for that to happen because dallas usually catches the healthy breaks. I could see a few IFs breaking the right way for Dallas too. And the D will still suck balls in the big spot. I wouldn't bet on Dallas holding any big qb down in the 4th. Not until proven otherwise. Go fucking prove it Dallas instead of talking the talk. Fast and friendly defense. Ain't stopping shit.
