but Choi certainly isn't a long term answer. He may have hit 2 big HRs, but his swing is ugly and I don't see him having continued success at the MLB level.
He won the starting job with his impressive 50 game debut in 2015 and has not seen the field since. Yanks have to question if he has a future now as an every day player.
I hope he can come back but I doubt it will be with the Yankees. He is now an unproven commodity with health issues.
If he has the surgery to remove the bone, then problem solved. I think he gets it done to end the problem once and for all- and comes back next year.
Honestly, with Pineda now going down, it really isn't worth the effort of making trades to stay in the race. The injuries have sunk this team after a great start. I think the Yanks should finish off the vet sell-off at the trade deadline, spend the next two months evaluating some more young players- especially their SP like Adams and Smith- and have the group ready for next spring.
Spend the winter adding depth to try and avoid the way injuries tanked this season and find one more SP, and move on to 2018.
I would also note that after the mess the Met's doctors made with Harvey, you also have to question how the Yanks doctors missed this broken bone since April.
This doesn't exactly put a good light on the practice of "team doctors" where you now have to wonder whether they are really acting in the players' best interest.

It is not a broken bone. It is "extra" growth on a small bone in the ankle.
Dammit. Maybe could have had him back this season if had been diagnosed earlier. And one has to believe he was receiving top-notch care...
Hoping he comes back strong next year and settles in as the Yankees 1B for a long time! And that the Yankees stick with the plan, regardless of the results this season...
It is an extra bone that many people have. If you have it on one side, you have it on the other foot as well. It is a sesamoid bone and if removed, he will recover very quickly because the achilles tendon does not have to be addressed and no hardware is needed. It is not a bad injury in any way.
was the idea that he must be shirking, because Yankee doctors cleared him. Sometimes the person with the pain knows infinitely more than a team doctor, which is why God made world-class orthopedic specialists. Bird getting cleared simply means that, in the opinion of the team doctors AT THAT TIME, Bird wouldn't do any additional damage to the ankle by playing.
Of course: 1) that now might be wrong; and 2) playing in pain can screw up your swing and other part of your body.
But hey, it was all in his head, or some other body part that connected to his head.

Going after Bour means Bird is done/gone. That isn't happening, yet.
Think they will live with Cooper/Austin/Choi/Romine until next year.

Recovery time wasn't too long. She had the surgery in June and was good to go by September.
