I still say it's not impossible the Mets make a run late. The question will be if they have enough runway left to make up the ground they've lost.

1.) Get Cabrera off this team as soon as possible. Fuck that guy. This will allow TJ Rivera to stay in the lineup when Walker returns.

2.) Trade either Bruce or Granderson (Bruce probably brings back more). This allows Conforto to slide into his natural position in RF and also allows Nimmo to stay up when Lagares returns.

3.) Bring in a reliever. Sandy loves adding Clippard/Reed type guys at the deadline. Do it again Sandy.

Team stays in tact for when the cavalry returns and the Mets still come away with a few prospects. Win Win.

There's nothing wrong with thinking that but why not keep things in play? A couple second tier prospects isn't helping our system that much and trading Reed and Blevins completely waves the white flag. The last TWO seasons the Mets went on massive runs in August. The Mets were 2 games under .500 on August 20th last year and made the playoffs! Im not trying to paint the picture the Mets are going to do it again but why not just keep things in play somewhat? The Rockies are paper wild card champs at the moment. They aren't that good. This series proves that. With Thor, Familia and others set to return I think it's pretty obvious we can be a better second half team.

AND playing a decent SS defensively. I ride his hot streak out as long as possible. As soon as he cools off I bring up Rosario and make Reyes a quasi-mentor and super sub (his original intended role).

And I'd rather get some prospects back and get did if these guys for something then letting them go for nothing

I agree. Regardless whether or not the pitching staff has help up or not, I can't imagine not making defense a priority when building a team around a great young pitching staff.

Who are the biggest culprits on defense though? IMO, it's Cabrera. If he's gone things imrpove with Reyes/Rosario at SS. Walker is average and TJ at third wont be great but it's not awful either.

Yes there is a chance Harvey returns. He is about to start throwing. Personally, I use him out of the pen for the rest of the year where I think he can excel. His shoulder has atrophied from the TOS surgery and he doesn't have the strength to pitch 6 innings this year.

Can this game mean we can be sensible and be sellers this month? The idea that the Mets were going to contend for a playoff spot is absurd.

He has really done a poor job this season. Putting aside the injuries for a moment there have been just far too many inconsistent starts from the staff this season. Some games, like this one the starter doesn't even seem prepared for the game. Mets had no chance today because of the horrible first inning by Matz.

Bradford demoted. Thank GOD. Robles has had a series of nice outings in a row.

I would. The guy can hit, but he's a player without a position. I understand sacrificing D for O, but he is a brutal fielder, and doesn't have a ton of power. If the offer is right, I'd move him.

with trading TJ Rivera is the return almost certainly is a lot lower than you would think. He's defensively a zero, 29 in October and unproven. I doubt the Red Sox are offering much for a guy like that.

You keep him, then. Low cost/productive player. At the MINIMUM, he's a very good bench player on a good team. At BEST, he's a productive hitter, everyday.

Sox have inquired into Asdrubal as well. Shrewd potential buy low for them.

They are calling every team about 3b help. Not really sure Cabrera/Rivera make a ton of sense for them in that role (one refuses to play 3b, the other is below average there). I'm guessing due diligence.

They must be desperate if they're considering Cabrera for 3B. Personally, I think he's a decent fit at 2B, but doesn't have the bat or arm for 3B.

Fangraphs gives the Mets a little under a 10% chance of winning a wild card spot. Given that we're likely looking at pretty marginal returns for our guys, I'm fine with the team going on an 8-2 streak and I get some fun baseball to watch over the last few months. It's not like we have a Miller or a Chapman that teams are going to get into bidding wars over.

Every prospect is a potential lottery ticket. You never know who is going to develop further or be better than expected. Heck, Syndergaard (a first rounder) was a prospect Keith Law thought was a future reliever and ranked him #87 in baseball, DeGrom was a non-prospect. The system is very thin, trade all impending FA's it's the right move.

Alderson dealing all those guys (Reed/Bruce etc.) but I'm not going to root for the Mets to lose games in order to push him to do so. If we end up going 8-2 over next 10 and Alderson stands pat I'm fine with that too. I don't think they are making a run, but the team has 10%ish or so playoff odds at some point in each of the two prior seasons and not only made it interesting but made it in.

I guess we're also working on incomplete information because we don't know what type of offers/interest Alderson is getting for the players.

If we do sell, I'd be thrilled to get anyone that's even an honourable mention on someone's top 100 list. Best return might be to package two useful players to a team with a big need (maybe seattle?).

get hot, they should trade an Of, preferably Jay Bruce. His horrific defense negates a lot of his value in the NL and I don't want to see Conforto on the bench a few times a week to get Grandy playing time.

Matz probably tabled the idea of selling high on him. I'd take anything resembling a prospect for Reyes. Walker might be able to bring something solid back.

Sandy, and put the for sale sign out and leave it out until the dead weight is gone.

If it's true that because of Cabrera, Rosario has been in the minors this long (and otherwise they would have called him up sooner), that's an indictment of the front office and coaching staff.

It's not like Asdrubal Cabrera is a difference maker.

Guys like Rivera and Flores are good to have around. Players get hurt all the time and versatile IFs can be worth a few extra wins over the course of the season. Remember the days of Loney, Campbell and Reynolds getting significant meaningful ABs over the course of the season? I'd hate to see us go back to that.
