Head Coach Ben McAdoo

July 28, 2017

Alright, yesterday we went out and moved them around a little bit, it was good. Today we saw how they responded. We didn’t do a lot of heavy work today, had about 3-4 speed periods out there. Dusted them off really football-wise and we will go in and take a look at it and we will go from there. We will open it up.

Q: Was Snacks a little limited today?

A: We are starting slow with Snacks. He came in in good shape. He was a little bit sore, but we are starting slow with him.

Q: Last year he had that also. Is it his knee? Is it the same thing he was dealing with at that point?

A: Yeah, he’s a little sore so we are going to start slow with him.

Q: What’s sore?

A: His lower body.

Q: How did you feel about the way Darian Thompson moved around?

A: I mean today defensively and offensively we only had some individual periods full speed. I thought the guys moved around okay for the first day. It was a little humid out there. They were soaked from the moment they walked out of the building, it seemed like. But I thought everyone moved around pretty well today.

Q: You put J.T Thomas on PUP. Did he not pass his physical? Where does he stand?

A: We are playing it smart with him.

Q: Did he pass his physical?

A: We are playing it smart with him.

Q: Do you expect him back relatively soon in camp?

A: We’ll see how it goes. He is making progress. He is not where we want him to be yet. Hopefully it is not anything that takes too long.

Q: How do you feel about players like WR Odell Beckham Jr making video statements about their contract desires?

A: That’s Odell’s personal business. I don’t get into the contract stuff. That’s not my area.

Q: How much do you worry about that becoming a distraction for other guys because now maybe they’ll have to answer questions about him and stuff like that. Does that affect you?

A: No, I don’t spend a bunch of time worrying about it.

Q: Ben, what is the plan going to be for the next few days? It looks like you are slowly ramping them up a little bit. When do you anticipate they will go full pads?

A: Well, we have not seen them for six weeks, so we are starting like we do really the offseason program, just a little quicker. We will put offense and defense together tonight in a jog through type environment without helmets just to get them used to putting their hands on each other a little bit, but nothing with any type of speed to it, just more teach pace. Tomorrow we will crank it up a little bit more and then we will do that one more time before giving them a day off and a chance to recover and come back and put some uppers on. We are gonna start small and build our way up. It’s not where you start in this business, it’s where you finish. And we don’t need to be ready to play a full game until we are ready to play a full game.

Re: players making video statements and possible distraction

A: That’s not a concern of mine.

Q: Is Geno Smith 100% now?

A: Geno is cleared to practice, cleared to play.

Q: Are there going to be any restrictions at all with him?

A: No. No restrictions for Geno

Q: Jerry Reese was talking yesterday about he wants to cut back on snaps a little bit because of Eli’s age, did you guys talk about that?

A: Well, it’s similar to what we talked about before we left six weeks ago. We are going to be real consistent. We are going to treat everyone differently. We are not a ‘one size fits all’ program here. Those days, I think, are gone with the way you practice now and the limited number of reps you get. The limited number of reps you get to develop young players, it’s unusual to have someone who has played as many snaps as many of the guys that we have on our team, so we are going to get them what they need to be ready to go and we are going to make sure that we can do our job developing young players and giving them the reps that they need to get to improve down the road, but we take everything into consideration and we are not a ‘one size fits all’ program. But with that being said, there are not as many reps as there have been in the past, so you have to take advantage of your opportunities. We have days where we acclimate, we have days where we work, and we get everything and squeeze all of the juice out of the orange and then we de-acclimate after that.

Q: You caused quite the stir yesterday revealing your story about Frazier the Lion. Are you aware of the ripple effect and are you amused by it at all?

A: Yeah, yesterday was a great day for everybody. It was good to be back. A lot of positive energy and then we snapped the ball today and now we are back to normal.

Q: Where do you find something like Frazier the Lion and what was the impetus of finding that story?

A: Go back to yesterday. That was in some stories yesterday.

Q: What was the message behind that story?

A: You all wrote about it. Exchange stories.

Q: Going back to Eli and having him on a pitch count, how do you balance getting him ready with all of the new parts, especially Rhett Ellison, Evan Engram and Brandon Marshall while still giving him what he needs?

A: When we acclimate, we have to get the quarterback to the team periods. So to acclimate a quarterback, he has to get loose and then stay warm and he has to make the throws he needs to make to stay warm so he can be competitive in the team period. You don’t want to warm him up, have him get cold, and then warm him up again. So, that’s the challenge. He makes the throws, he needs to throw at the beginning part of practice just to get to practice. He makes those throws to who he needs to make those throws to in practice to build chemistry. It’s not just random throws to your equipment guys or your ball boys or whoever the case may be, it’s to the players he needs to get the work in with. So there is a plan for that in place. When he is a part of the normal rotation that’s when he has a chance to feel the ball with other players on the roster. But there is a strategic plan to when you acclimate and when you de-acclimate. It’s not just the arm, the arm is a small part of it. It’s the legs, it’s the legs.

Q: What kind of shape did Odell come in?

A: Everybody looks to be in good condition. He is one of those guys who looks like he could roll out of bed and run a 4.3. He’s in tremendous condition.

Q: What is it like to have the presence of a guy like Antonio Pierce mentoring a young linebacker group?

A: It’s good to have Antonio around. I am excited for him to be a part of things this year and it’s a good get for us, a good bonus.

Q: Jerry said before the draft that you guys were going to try different offensive line combinations. Is that still the plan? And how are you going to go about doing that?

A: We will see how we develop here and we are going to give guys opportunities to contribute and we’ll see how that unfolds moving forward.

Q: Do you view D.J Fluker though as primarily a guard?

A: I see him as a right side player for right now, but things can change in a hurry in this business.
I would be curious to know if one idiot asks all the stupid questions

or if it is several idiots participating?

Maybe it should be more like a presidential press conference when the reporters are identified.
They're all idiots

Isn't that obvious? And McAdoo talks and talks, and never says anything. Just like Coughlin. Maybe worse.
This cracked me up

Totally (Parcell-esque) lol.
Is it possible to label who asks the questions?

Not expecting anyone at BBI to do this but In this era of 'fake news' it would be so wonderful to know which reporters are conclusively the pricks. Maybe then we can keep rankings and stats on them and publicize it. Hell then maybe we'd get better production from them

Startup idea? Who's in?
