Michael Hunter and Mykelle Thompson as the backup corners
Ellison ahead of Engram is no surprise. However, from what we've been told Thomas is getting most of the 1st team snaps next to Harrison. We've heard more about DD at CB than Thompson but who knows.

Ellison "starting" is no surprise... they spent $18 million on a blocker - he's not going to sit on the bench. But who "starts" at TE is largely moot...both are going to play.
Draughn is really hurting himself by being on the PUP. That combined with what Sy'56 said yesterday about Darkwa POTENTIALLY being the only back with some power on the roster helps Darkwa. But I agree with Sy'56 too...Darkwa is not just competing against the guys on OUR roster but cuts from around the NFL.
BillT... that's one of the interesting notes to me. For years, Spags seems to have been trying to force a hybrid DE/LB into that spot (remember Kiwanuka's flip flopping there?). I don't think Maponga is likely to make the team, but I picked up on that too.
I'm hoping Munson actually turns out to be a ST stud so we can move on, including from J.T. Thomas.

Exactly. And I think Sy gave Maponga a poor review as well.
Nothing really surprising other than the order of the Fullbacks Â

re. Valentino Blake, I think Sy' mentioned him in his Saturday practice report, saying he was overwhelmed by Marshall's aggressiveness in going for the ball in the air (along with OBJ), and qualifying that observation by saying it didn't take anything away from Blake.
seem to have "earned" a spot in the INITIAL depth chart, especially if they did not regress in the spring (e.g. Tye).
Based only on reports from camp observers, my only surprise was Pinkins low spot.
Unless he really falls on his face Gallman will of course beat out one or more to land on the 53.
Expect to see a lote of movement within the backups.
That's the problem with these hybrids... they usually can rush the passer and are good against the run, but they aren't very good moving backwards or in space... and that's a bit of a problem in my eyes given the way the game is played today.
Devon Kennard is probably better suited to be a linebacker in the 1980s or in a 3-4 defense. I like him and I think he has just enough athleticism to handle being a true linebacker. But Maponga doesn't. Atlanta tried to find a position for him too and it didn't work out. He's probably on the wrong team and/or era.
Thought Matt LaCosse would be higher up the chart Â
based on a few of the camp reports he seemed to be one of the standouts at camp so far.
nyjuggernaut... key quote from McAdoo yesterday:
Quote:
Q: What have you seen from tight end Will Tye and how much pressure does Evan Engram’s potential put on him?
A: Yeah, I mean, we’ve got a lot of guys on the offensive side who are on the bubble. The thing about being on the bubble is sometimes it takes your fears to bring out the best in you and that’s what we’re looking for in those guys. What are you going to do? Are you going to step up, or are you going to step back? All it is is an opportunity for him to get better.

Interesting...can't wait for preseason games to get underway, seems like a lot of position battles that will be fun to follow.

McAdoo seemed pretty clear that Tye was on the bubble. You can read the transcript. I thought it was pretty telling. Challenged him to use the competition to get better.

Yet he's still ahead of Lacosse on the depth chart. Seeing them both block in the 1st preseason game will be key.
I wouldn't read into the depth chart now, before any preseason games, Â
too much. IMO some players are put ahead based on seniority initially, but this will all change by the time the season starts. The only take away for me is where the lack of depth is.
Surprised to see Pinkins listed as a free safety. Â

exactly--MacAdoo's commentary on Tye (implicitly being on the bubble) even as Tye is listed as 3rd TE suggests this initial depth chart is part reality of the competition, part seniority and where you were drafted (if at all). Sy is telling us, from his assessments, that no way should Pinkins be listed at the bottom of S position (whether F or S).
too much. IMO some players are put ahead based on seniority initially, but this will all change by the time the season starts. The only take away for me is where the lack of depth is.
Agreed. It's only August 6th. Only a couple of practices in pads, no preseason games. A lot can change in the next four weeks.
JPP and OV, of course. Okwara looks to be the first guy off the bench. Moss, and not only because he was a draft pick. The rest - OO, Taylor, Wynn, Williams, and Schwan are battling it out for the fifth spot.
can bring at this point with Ellison and Evan Engram added
do they really need to hang on to Tye it's not like he is a devastating blocker or a threat down the field , I don't
think he has enough appeal to garner a trade . Unless they
plan on keeping 5 TE's .
Not so sure we are set at RB either .. I feel we lack a power runner unless Darqua stays healthy and shows he can
get the tough yards when needed .
Might add another vet CB before long and you never know with injuries either .
Also doesn't Ellison have a background there? I would think that both of the listed FBs are a longshot to make the team. I think it would make much more sense to keep an extra TE in that spot. Would much rather have Ellison play that position during the rare occasions that we are in a formation that requires a FB and keep either LaCosse and Adams than keep a guy on the roster who might be needed for 2/3 snaps per game.
On Shane Smith including watching some of his game from 2015 against Auburn. Wow is he strong. He is very much like a Heath Evans type of fullback. Dont know much about his hands, but he ran a 4.67 at his pro day and jumped 10'6". Thats awfully explosive for a guy who is 240, can bench 225 36 times, deadlift 550 and Power clean 335.

Both Will Johnson and Nikta Whitlock were lost to injuries before last season even began, so we didn't have a true FB last year even though we'd planned on having one. In my opinion, that's one reason our running game was so anemic (the big fork in Rashad Jennings' back was another one, but that's neither here nor there).
This year, I think the Giants are once again planning on utilizing a true FB, which is why they brought two of them into camp along with their beefed up corps of TEs, and why they've been practicing a variety of personnel groupings including those that feature the FB along with one or even two TEs, particularly in short-yardage/goal-line situations. That doesn't necessarily mean a return to the "power running" game, but it does give the Giants more flexibility when it comes to attacking a defense.
Regardless of what this unofficial Depth Chart says, I think he's the favorite to win the FB job, based on what Sy and the beats have been reporting. He only carried the ball a handful of times in college, and caught around 20 passes or so, but to borrow from robbieballs, just because a guy wasn't asked to do something doesn't mean he can't do it at all.
Would he get a hat on gamedays? Well, he played LB before converting to FB so I figure he knows how to tackle. He could be an asset on Special Teams, more so than an additional RB or WR, or even TE.
As for Ellison, he came into the league as more of a FB than your traditional TE, but his role changed significantly in Minnesota due to injuries and attrition. My guess is that the Giants would prefer to have him line up inline a lot more than in the backfield, but, of course that remains to be seen.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk about Jay Bromley. Â
So much chatter about the "low men on the totem pole," so to speak, and only one post about this "3rd Round Reach/Bust" starting next to Snacks (albeit unofficially)? Where's TMS when you need him?
Well, I may be one of the few here who still have hope for the guy, so it was gratifying to see his name penciled in next to Harrison's (the operative word being "penciled"). I look forward to seeing how all of our DTs perform in the preseason.

I don't think so, all were injured during preseason and the team did nothing to bring in another one.

Agree, the OL had its problems and was the primary factor, but not having a blocking FB and not having a TE that could block contributed to the lifeless running game.
D.Taylor can be a DE and DT....i suspect they keep 6 Â
because I was thinking Ellison would be considered the FB for all intents and purposes, allowing them to keep all 4 tights.
If Shane Smith sticks at FB, you can forget about LaCosse and Tye is in very real trouble.
Not necessarily. Much will depend on how many players they keep at RB, WR, and OL (I figure three QBs is a given). One thing's for certain - it's going to be a hell of a summer.
...

Klaatu, I guess that raises the question and debate: if SS comes on the field, in whatever other personnel groupings, defensive coordinators are going to scheme and personnel vs. a running play, and does that offset, in whole or part, the utility of keeping a FB, as opposed to switching TEs within formations? The flip side of that argument is, I guess: ok, we're telegraphing what we're going to do, can you stop it?
re. Bromley, yes, a bit higher profile this camp, and it needs to be in his 3rd season. Still early and DT (the DT DT) is coming along slowly, and we still don't know what we have in Thomas, so I wouldn't say he is exactly turning heads, yet.
BigBlueDownTheShore : 11:36 am : link : reply
He probably wouldn't be the first guy up. I am sure Herzlich/Robinson/Casillas could fill in at other LB spots if a starter were to go down.
No.....as long as Herz is thought of as a LB, it shows you how week this group is....hard to believe we can't improve on him with someone else, who can also play ST's....
Are on the team right now, tho we could see a late pickup (probably from another team's late cuts) at LB or CB. I really thought we would draft a LB, at least late...tho maybe they felt burned by that too many times lately from getting nothing from rd 4-6 LBs (except Kennard who has been solid). But we really have 4 play-able LB's right now - Kennard, Cassilas, Goodson & Robinson. Very happy we brought Robinson back, and my guess is that this lack of depth may be a big reason JT Thomas is still riding here (riding a bike I guess). Little doubt a guy will shake loose from a team with better depth that would be a better fill in (like when we grabbed Brinkley late a few years back - no great shakes but was able to fill in better than what else we likely had). Bet we take 6 LBs in the 53, maybe 1 more on PS for depth.
I thought our CB depth after Apple looked a bit weak, tough to complain that the #4 CB is sub par, but that's how good the rest of the D is, so good problem to have. And several have stepped up in camp - Hunter has made some plays, and Blake has looked OK and has experience. I think we go with 10 DBs, maybe 6 CB/4 S - and if they keep a guy like M Thompson maybe #6 CB is also #5S. The last few will likely change as preseason goes along, guys step up or get hurt, but current guess would be: Jenkins, Apple, DRC, Blake, Hunter, M Thompson (or possibly Deayon, tho I could see him hit PS again); then Collins/Berhe at SS and D Thompson/Adams at FS (which I think is a solid pair next to Collins and should let him play, Thompson seemed a solid FS before injuries and Adams played well mostly, only 1-2 games where he showed up for bad plays).
Not many surprises yet, and the majority of the key spots are probably already set, or will be a rotation barring someone breaking out or falling off/getting hurt. A bit sad that we need to devote 3 spots to QBs, but guess we need to start planning for life after Eli and developing a young QB(hopefully better than our last try at a QB...). A nice bonus to save a spot on a 3rd QB, but we may not keep a FB this year (tho could mean xtra TE), and probably not much reason to keep 9 OL (unless a young guys shines in preseason and they can't get him to PS, or an 'IR' stash...), so unlikely to squeeze out a real contributor...never know tho

I dont think this will be our approach...here comes the run, tty and stop it. Unless our O line its dominant. Id think Smith would have tho sry least show an ability to catch the ball at least a little to keep things honest from the defense. The guy has some speed an explosion, i would love or ox he could squirt out to the flats on play action, make a catch and run through some people. Would love another Greg Comella
is a great 3rd TE. That's what he does for you. How long do you have to just be a good football player in the NFL to get respect? I'd rather keep him than have the 7th round pick NYG would get for him. If Ellison is hurt, do you not want someone out there who can line up at tight end and catch a pass? It has the potential to be a strong position right now, let it be so.

but FBs Huesman first team, Smith second team puzzles me
Isn't Smith struggling with some sort of minor injury?
He probably wouldn't be the first guy up. I am sure Herzlich/Robinson/Casillas could fill in at other LB spots if a starter were to go down.
No.....as long as Herz is thought of as a LB, it shows you how week this group is....hard to believe we can't improve on him with someone else, who can also play ST's....

I dont think this will be our approach...here comes the run, tty and stop it. Unless our O line its dominant. Id think Smith would have tho sry least show an ability to catch the ball at least a little to keep things honest from the defense. The guy has some speed an explosion, i would love or ox he could squirt out to the flats on play action, make a catch and run through some people. Would love another Greg Comella
