McAdoo's Rule of 53

LCtheINTMachine : 8/6/2017 12:03 pm
So reading the Ranaan piece on Mac's terminology I heard of his Rule of 53 - his goal is to reach that number in pass completions and rush attempts combined. It's supposed to be a metric in terms of winning.

Last year, we accomplished this four times, going 3-1 when we did this.

When we were below 50, we went 6-4
Between 50-52, we went 3-0

It's an interesting dynamic that we were able to win so much falling short of that metric.
I guess it is useful for analyzing completed games, but

I don't see how it can provide guidance during the course of a game. Yeah, you want as many completions as possible and you want to have a good running game so you can stay on the field.

I mean, it is the fourth quarter and you are down a TD. You have the ball third and 6 on their 45 yd line. Are you really going to consult the rule of 53 to decide what to do?
Cause, or effect?
