No question. And if they do have to play the wild card game, he'll almost surely be the top pitcher in that game. Unless the Indians lost the division and were throwing Kluber, something like that.
he's got the stuff to just go right at guys with two strikes. Almost like he's trying to make that perfect swing and miss slider and he's missing a bit. But can't complain otherwise.

Have to hope that if they're in a wild card spot that they have enough of a lead to line up the pitching for Sevy to be available in the WC game. Could be tricky if they have a week of basically must-win games leading up just to make the WC game.
I really hate that it's 1 game. The season is such a grueling grind that it feels like anything less than a 3 game series is an arbitrary result.
But with Gray behind him and Tanaka throwing a lot better, they should have three pretty good options to start that game. Figure they can get one of them lined up.

Yep. 98-100 mph or a devastating slider and changeup. And he's 23 so still learning to pitch. I think once the changeup becomes more confident in his mind he can go for it more often.
some MLB-caliber teams over the next couple of weeks, so hopefully the tide will turn.
Yeah, the White Sox have put up very little resistance this weekend. Of course, the Indians blew a few sure-wins in Boston in the previous series. As usual, the Red Sox keep catching all the breaks.

For sure. I think we can lose sight of just how young these guys are, I'm guilty of it too. Judge, Sanchez, Sev, Frazier, etc. They've shown us what they're capable of and raise our expectations, and we sometimes forget that they're still learning and adjusting to this game. There will be ups and downs.
Why not. One here and three in the eighth. Off day tomorrow.
I almost think Joe is going with two sets of three BP pitchers. Robertson, Betances, Chapman and Kahnle, Warren and Green.. High pressure group and low pressure group.

Exactly. I don't see the gripe about Kahnle pitching
and how about Headley and Ellsbury getting the big hits the last 2 days? Revenge of the BBI whipping boys!

you have a pretty good point there. It would make sense for the groupings. I like it.
They have about 4 or 5 guys that could close - Chapman, Betances, Robertson, Kahnle and maybe Warren or Green. So having 2 sets of BP groups allows him to almost go odd and even teams. Of course he can mix an match and in reality it is nothing but idle speculation on my part.
from avoiding overuse of his 7-9th innings guys, to getting them enough work. Cashman added length among starters AND two key new live arms. So, he used one today. BFD. Girardi has a philosophy for his bullpen. The fact that some people disagree doesn't make it awful.
and isn't even good defensively. Girardi is a moron.
Kyle, every article, every coach says Romine is a good defensive catcher. I have never seen anything that agrees with what you say. Either come up with something proving your point, or can it. It is getting old. Yeah he's not good at the plate. We get it. Black hole like Ells, Frazier and a few others.
don't tell me to can it. He's thrown out 14% of runners this season (awful). His catchers ERA it was posted the other day is a full run higher than Sanchez's, so the idea that he calls a good game isn't supported. And he's nothing special at blocking pitches, as we just saw.
Happy?
Kyle, it is not about throwing runners out. It is about him being a good back stop. Yesterday he stopped at least 5 balls that I would not have, been comfortable with Sanchez fielding. That high and outside Chapman 100 mph fastball in the Bottom of the 9th with Brantley on 1st I am sure would have gotten by Romine.
This is great news that they are sitting Sanchez to send a message. I wish it was for more than 1 game, but he has to understand that his approach behind the plate is unacceptable.

Agreed Choppy. Don't want Sanchez to be complacent in not trying hard to block pitches, which is what he looked like for a long stretch. Hope this fires him up and he plays harder behind the plate as well as in the batter's box.

Yea that whole "he added 8-12 lbs of muscle and thats why he cant get to balls" thing was horseshit. Its not that he was too slow to balls, and was just late to the spot. He was trying to get bouncers and without throwing his body in front of them.
Late to the party, but SO GLAD to see Judge hit one
about the 5th inning. I took my wife out for some afternoon events. When I left, BBI was disgusted with this team, their effort and performance. When I get home, I find out that we've score 8 runs and trounced the Indians.
Maybe I should stay off the game threads.
I could do without the overanalyzing of any ball that Sanchez
doesn't block. Romine didn't attempt to block one in the dirt today and there was no drawn out analysis or attempts to call him fat and lazy.
The piling on with Sanchez has been a bit much lately. I could see if we were talking about a vet, but the guy hasn't even been on a major league roster for 162 games yet. I guess patience and understanding that 98% of young players are going to struggle and look like shit at times is out the window. These are probably all of the people who wanted to put Sevy in the bullpen. I have little issue with Joe wanting to sit Sanchez for a day or two, but he could've done a better job of heading off the media's bullshit.
He did say that Sanchez had played 11 straight days, but that didn't really feed into what the media storyline was, so it was conveniently buried in articles or tweets I read.
IDK, how much better can he get? Slightly more power or slightly higher BA? Maybe take a few more walks to get the OBP higher would be the most likely.
Its probably a lefty/righty thing Girardi had mentioned that because he's a switch hitter it takes extra time to get his timing back. Maybe Trenton is facing the side pitcher they want him to face. Either way its probably a matter of a few days at this point.
Really don't like that Garcia is replacing Montgomery. Garcia has much more experience then Monty but IMO, Monty is just better and will likely improve.Garcia is mediocre, nothing more.

Monty may be on an innings limit, which could affect the decision.
Yanks could throw a bullpen game one day if needed
Game 7 of the World Series, Severino pitched game 6 and threw 122 pitches he has two days rest and Cash says let him throw 45 pitches.
Gray and the rest of the staff all tripped over oily floors in the pitching room and have back spasms
Severino gives you 1 IP throws 31 pitches, 1 hit 1 BB 2 KO 0 runs
Girardi brings in Warren 2 IP 2 hits 2 K 0 runs
Then Kahnle comes in pitches 2 innings 6 Ks 1BBs 0 hits on 38 pitches
Betances comes in for 2 IP 6 Ks 0 runs
Robertson comes in the 8th for a perfect inning 3 ground balls
Chapman closes out the WS. 51 pitches in 1 inning, 3 walks, 3 strikeouts, 2 passed balls, 1 wild pitch, 3 runs, Yanks hang on
Or could use Green instead of Sevy on short rest

would be crazy enough to let Sevy throw 122 pitches, at any time. With the bullpen set up the way it is, chances of Severino being in the game that long are pretty slim.
What you'll see if we get in a playoff series is Joe going to the pen
real early without hesitation. Say we are playing Houston game 2 or 3 and Tanaka isn't getting shelled but has given 3 runs into the 5th and we're losing like 3-1. He won't hesitate at that point to get 4+ or 5 out of the pen figuring if they can keep it right there we can rally for a few runs over the last 4 or 5 innings.
RE: per RAB, Hicks is joining Trenton to continue his rehab
An article the other day stated that the team would like to bring Hicks back when they return home from the current road trip. If SWB is going on the road, the Trenton gig may be to have him closer to New York.
Really don't like that Garcia is replacing Montgomery. Garcia has much more experience then Monty but IMO, Monty is just better and will likely improve.Garcia is mediocre, nothing more.

Agree. I'd venture to bet that he will only go 3 to 5 innings a game at SWB, then return to the Yanks after 9/1 when rosters can expand.
Greg Bird has started hitting in the cage and will start fielding and running drills next week. If all goes well he will start his rehab assignment in 2-weeks and could be back at the end of the month. Seems like he will need more rehab time, but we will see.
No question. And if they do have to play the wild card game, he'll almost surely be the top pitcher in that game. Unless the Indians lost the division and were throwing Kluber, something like that.
All Rise!
