Cruz in his first NYG training camp...

CT Charlie : 8/7/2017 6:45 pm
For those with a better memory than mine, was Victor Cruz a standout in training camp? I know that he was dynamite in the preseason games, but I'm curious whether he impressed in practice, too.

With the Jets?

<vbg>

I think the preseason game was the major "coming out party". We didn't have all the near instant social media access / coverage we have today during Cruz' first camp as I recall. As an UDFA, I doubt there was much mention of him.

Tom Coughlin specifically mentioned him repeatedly throughout camp

"How bout that victor cruz.... I'm serious!"
yeah, I remember

a bunch of other receivers were injured and Coughlin says, "We don't need anyone else, we got Victor Cruz. I'm serious! He's running by people."
I found the exact quote

“Victor Cruz!” Coughlin exclaimed. “What do we need anybody for? We have Victor Cruz! Look at these plays he made this morning. I’m serious. He made some outstanding plays. Yesterday, he was going by people out there. Hey, it’s a great thing. Just keep adding to the group.”

He performed well enough in camp to make the team.
Good enough in his first camp that the team PROBABLY

milked his hamstring injury to stash him on IR rather than risk exposing him on the practice squad.
we stashed him on IR

and people have given kudos to the FO and coaching staff for that but I've always kind of wondered - why didn't we just keep him on the roster? It's not like our WR depth was spectacular. Looking over the 2010 roster I see guys like Duke Calhoun and Derek Hagan. And that's the year Steve Smith got hurt so we really could have used him down the stretch.

Don't get me wrong, some teams would have cut the guy so it's not a huge knock but if a guy is playing that well in camp and pre-season, UDFA or not, he should be on the final roster. Go with your eyes.

All this assuming that the injury was BS of course.
as I remember

Eric wrote that he thought Cruz was going to be special before the first Pre Season played
That was a great camp up in Albany

Cruz was outstanding in practises and was hanging out with Tim Brown a speedster from Rutgers.
From what I remember

There was this small WR wearing #2 that kept getting open. No one could cover him.

When I mentioned that on the main page, the response from a lot of BBI was "well, he's going against the #3's, wait till he starts playing against the #1's". When that happened, though, he STILL was getting open, and making plays..often fantastic ones...all over the field. We were still arguing over Sinorice Moss, BTW.

Yeah, Cruz was special that camp.
John, I really thought Cruz

wore #3 early on. Maybe he has #2 earlier? Could be.
#2 was Tim Brown

Shit oh shit, Aug 16 this year the Cruz breakout preseason game vs the Jets will be 7 years ago. Even the newer stuff is getting old, as they say.

Yeah I always thought it was funny myself how he got stashed on IR so quickly, I honestly forget what time of the year he was IRed by.
did Greg Buttle play for the Giants?
I Love Clams Casino : 8/8/2017 8:13 am : link
yeah, right?
Duke Calhoun - wow!

The guy caught a long pass I think the last preseason game and was supposed to be good on specials.

His regular season claim to fame was being one of the 2 closest players and the executed onside kick against us during the Eagle meltdown. Veered off to block with no awareness that they may try the onside. One a Giant ... my *ss. There are some exceptions to the list. He is one of them.
Yes, he was very much a standout at camp back in 2010.

My 9-year old daughter: "Dad, who is #3?"

Me: "I have no idea. Why?"

My 9-year old daughter: "Because he's pretty awesome"

Me: "Sweetie, his name is Victor Cruz."

My 9-year old daughter: "Does he have a chance to make the team?"

Me: "I don't think so. He's from UMass which isn't exactly a football factory and #3 isn't a serious uniform number"

Boy, was I dead wrong! My daughter and I talk about it all the time!!
