NFT: Need advice on how to find applicants for a job opening

Milton : 8/9/2017 7:17 pm
Okay so my friend just got hired as a special education administrator for a charter school and one of her many first tasks is to hire two special education teachers. So far she's received only two unimpressive resumes. She'd like to cast a wider net, but this is her first management-level job and she's never had to do something like this before. Nor is it something I have any experience at.

I've googled "special education teacher chat room" and I guess she could post the job openings on one or more of them, but I was wondering if there is a place where resumes are posted and she could just put in a few key words to get a bunch of resumes that fit the profile for the position.

All suggestions are welcome.
Indeed will scrub

the job page on a URL for free so if here is a URL where he posting is that should be step #1. You can also do paid postings as well which is on a PPC model where you set your own budgets.

Then here's LinkedIn which would be useful since your friend would hopefully have connections in the same field. If the job is posted it will blast out to your friends network of contacts and maybe you land a referral.
How did your friend find out about the job?

maybe use the same method and post the job there.

If that doesn't work, Uconn suggested a couple good options, and then there is the local news sites.

In Boston, the Globe website, boston.com has a job posting section (that links to Monster.com)

elementary teacher handling special education, etc. to 4th and 5th graders in a Public School System. She is starting year 4 of her teaching.

But she's residing here in Wilmington, NC.

There's probably Special Education Educators Websites you can go "fishing" for applicants.

I hope this helps.

got hire for an administrative job that includes hiring staff and she doesn't know what she wants in an employee?

Let me know how this disaster works out. Sounds like she is in over her head.

Sorry.

He didn't say she didn't know what she wants in an employee, just where to find the best ones. That's a little different.

Shouldn't she know as an administrator? No?

Especially in a field as that?
Shouldn't she post the jobs in the local paper(s) as one starting

and occasionally browse openings around the country. Many charter school jobs are posted on the same sites as the regular public school jobs, so maybe she should check where those regular schools in her state post jobs.

Yes, but that's a different question...

Sorry.
I just used Indeed.com

The job is in the Los Angeles area, but the territory stretches out wider than just Los Angeles county.
Thanks for the responses, they are appreciated

I will share them with her to follow up on.

p.s.--To those with questions, she has spent years as a teacher in both general ed and special ed, originally in the classroom and for the past ten plus years with a couple different charter schools. She was referred for the special ed coordinator position by a friend of a friend at a charter school with a program that she was unfamiliar with, but she interviews well and was offered the job.

Unfortunately, she inherited a mess. It's a well-established, well-funded school, but it faces law suits from whacky parents, regulation issues from the state government, and not enough teachers for the students enrolled and the school year begins Sept. 5th. On top of that, the school utilizes different software than her previous schools, so she is binge-watching tutorials to get up to speed.

That being said, the school hired the right person when they hired her despite her rookie status as an administrator and inexperience with their software. Once she gets past the learning curve, she will knock it out of the park. She knows her stuff and she is a good communicator.

As for the job openings she needs to fill, the positions were posted via school's usual channels by the Human Resources department, but she only received two applicants so far (one has the proper credentials, but zero experience, the other is completely unqualified).

Here is a video of her winning teacher of the year at her previous school - ( New Window )
I know it is a long shot
Mike in NY : 8/10/2017 6:57 am : link
But if she is friendly with those doing hiring at other schools maybe she can reach out to some of them to see if there were candidates who just missed getting hired and then reach out to those candidates to see if they are still looking? I know it is late in the process and many may have gone elsewhere, but if enough were just resigned to accepting per diem substitute positions they may jump at the chance for this job.

Yep, sounds like you're a dick.

Sorry.
The fact that she doesn't know how to go about this is another
Elisha10 : 8/10/2017 11:44 am : link
reason why charter school's should not exist. There is a shortage in special education teachers even in the NYC area where salaries are high. If the public schools have problems finding special education teachers then it will be that much tougher for charter schools. She will probably have to hire a teacher with a different license, lets all remember that half of charter school teachers are not certified and most teachers leave after 3 years. Trust me, I know, I used to work at a charter school.
If it is for California
SimpleMan : 8/10/2017 11:50 am : link
then she should use EdJoin. That is where all the CA teaching jobs are including the charters. Candidates can search by job type, location, or just a general search on there. Their resumes are uploaded already along with letters of recommendation, transcripts etc., which your wife can quickly review.
