Football Gameplan's 2017 Giants Season Preview - ( New Window )
Well done, appreciate it.

I think you are spot on(except the part when you say we will finish 2nd to Dallas!) in your analysis. I think Marshall is going to be key to the offensive success, moreso than Engram and I also agree that Thompson is a breakout candidate on the other side.

You note a lot of things that most talking heads gloss over(perkins>jennings, the OL being better late in the season as we got healthy, etc...).
When Perkins finally started getting split time with Jennings
BSIMatt : 8/10/2017 2:59 pm : link
Basically the last 4 games of the year vs Philadelphia, Dallas, Washington and Detroit, the Giants averaged over 120ypg on the ground(nearly 4ypc) and the team went 3-1..with the one loss being the 2nd Philly game which contained some of the worst officiating I witnessed all season.
So the Giants significantly impoved their offensive skill positions
BillT : 8/10/2017 3:33 pm : link
With the addition of Marshall, Engram, Perkins to go with a top tier defense and STs. The Cowboys, on the other hand, lost half a dozen starters but that changes nothing. Cowboys are still better (if you are what your record says you are). Alrighty then.

I'm building in the 'Eli factor'.. that's worth a negative 2 games at least. Giants should've knocked off both Philly and Washington last season

Thanks Keith! I feel like the OL got a bad rep early, and many national folks used that as the excuse for the entire season

I would expect a more explosive backfield this year without Jennings. The reserves bring a lot of juice off the bench.
EM, Cowboys will be lucky to even get to a .500 record
idinkido : 8/10/2017 5:10 pm : link
Defense lacks depth and talent. OL has holes. In fact, I expect them to have the worse record in the NFC East.

Even with their additions, they got significantly weaker along the defensive line. I love their secondary additions though

I'm really not sure if you're being serious here. Eli is worth a minus two games!! Compared to who exactly. My goodness this is a dumb a comment as I can remember.
What I find interesting is how Dallas is given a pass to greatness
MasherJints : 8/11/2017 6:07 am : link
Fluctuation while transcendent is not considered a quotient in judging the Cowboys. The secondary by association will be improved, no matter the the normal adjustment from college to the NFL environment. The Dallas DL will be improved regardless of suspensions or lackluster showings in preseason. Dallas is guaranteed at least 10 wins because of their great OL. What I see are a convolution of assumptions to perceived greatness with equal reserve on continuing development to support doubt.

The Giants D cannot continue its level of excellence because its illogical to expect such performance. The OL cannot be credible because the Giants did not add lackluster talent to replace perceived untalented young players. How can it be possible for the New York Giants football franchise to become successful if they don't make adjustments according to the opinion of the pundits. Any former coach who has a favorable opinion of the Giants is mistaken because, it goes against what is logical.

I think Em is a great analyst but he is allowing his summation to be influenced by erroneous assessments. The Giants are what they seem to be, a highly talented football team that will be extremely dangerous in all three fazes of the game. They are very young and built for a continuous level of excellence. No matter how much value and praise is hyped on the competition their negatives simply don't match up against the complementary strengths of the Giants roster.

Therefore I just want the games to begin, and let our talent squelch the doubters vitriol. The 2017 Giants have a greater talent pool than 86, excluding the LB corps across the the board. None of the teams on their schedule have comparable talent to match up with them. NFL networks assessment of projected wins and losses is a joke. Denver will beat the Giants with Simeon or Lynch at QB is an insult. That Oakland should beat the New York is laughable. How is their secondary going to match up with the Giants. The inverse of how will their receiving corps be successful against the Giants secondary.

The presumption that the Giants D cannot continue its level of excellence because it it is illogical to assume so, is convoluted BS. The 2017 Giants are what we think they are, a talented loaded squad that is getting prepared to assault the NFL. No matter how much caution is placed on projections, it will soon become apparent that talent cannot be hidden or devalued. Let everyone be given the benefit of doubt, the 2017 New York Football Giants will the the tsunami to eradicate tempered logic.

We are what we seem, a juggernaut and those in our path best get ready for the onslaught. At the end of the season the schedule will be a testament of validity.

I love your optimism and your logic, but "a testament to validity"? What does that mean?
Masher, it does not appear as though you watched the video.
Keith : 8/11/2017 9:15 am : link
Most of your criticism is geared towards the majority of the talking heads, but not EmDiggy's video. Watch the video first.
Re: Dallas,
Keith : 8/11/2017 9:20 am : link
a lot of the same was said last year. Their defense is brutal, rookie QB, rookie RB. Why are they getting so much credit? Then they went on to win the division. It's not absurd to expect Dallas to compete in the division(I believe they will take a step back).
Thanks Diggy. I thought a good job
Jimmy Googs : 8/11/2017 9:27 am : link
until the end. 2nd to Dallas...really?

Also, not sure our Specials were "great" last year despite winning the Saints game. They had some gaffs as well as the year went on. Punt coverage was pretty good but everything else...ehhh.

thx for the video though...

That's funny, when he said that, I thought to myself "was our specials really that good last year?". I thought maybe I forgot or something.
They weren't. No really noticeable kick returns or
Jimmy Googs : 8/11/2017 9:46 am : link
punts returns other than maybe seeing Herzlich and others holding on OBJ's exciting runbacks for TDs that called back.

KO and Punt coverage teams were also just okay too.

Although I thought Wing and a few of his gunners did a good job as the season went on.

Agree that STs helped win versus Saints but also helped lose versus Redskins and Minn as well.

Coach Quinn knows how to pace his teams well to bring the bad with the good. Plenty of years experience behind him...

I thought it was a pretty fair assessment, generally positive.
Klaatu : 8/11/2017 10:17 am : link
Couple of things, though. No mention of the schedule, which looks brutal at this stage of the game. The travelling, plus the games against teams coming off their bye weeks will test this team mentally as well as physically. It will also be a big test for Ben McAdoo, too. I worry more about the schedule than I do about the other teams in the division.

I thought the 2nd Place comment was a little odd. I try not to underestimate any opponent, but it doesn't seem likely that Dallas will duplicate the success they had last year. Too many players lost through free agency, injury, suspensions, etc. I like the DBs they drafted, too, and I think they'll be very good in time, but I can see them struggling as rookies.

Overall, good job, Em. Thanks.
Yeah def seems as though
Keith : 8/11/2017 10:17 am : link
he put too much stock into that blocked kick.
Oh, yeah...special teams...forgot about them.
Klaatu : 8/11/2017 10:37 am : link
I don't see how you can say they'll be good without knowing who our kicker will be. I think our coverage teams and return game will be okay (and a few less penalties will certainly help), but truly elite teams don't miss too many XPs and FGs. If we head into the season with an unproven rookie as our kicker (a distinct possibility), every attempt he makes will be a nail-biter in my opinion.
The final assessment predicted a 10-6 record.
MasherJints : 8/11/2017 12:56 pm : link
The uncertainty of the OL. The D being able to maintain its elite level of performance. The doubts over the running game. While a favorable assessment there is a tempered optimism.

I think what will be witnessed this season is that we can no longer project according to past results. This is coach MacDoo's second season, we are only just learning how he will handle different adversities. To credit inferior performance because of travel is impractical. When I look at our schedule, I gauge the match ups which leans favorably toward the Giants.

I think that we error in doubting the players incentive toward greatness and championship when projecting results. The level of commitment demonstrated by many young players are examples of their focus. Many Giants Alumni are expressing optimism in a championship campaign. I don't foresee the lulls of 2007 or 2011, but rather 2008 without the Plaxico incident which derailed what could of been back to back championships.

If we want a true example of what we can expect from the Giants D 2008 is it. After which DC Spagnoulo was hired by the Rams. If history is repeated I don't see 6 losses.
EM, You really need to reappraise the Cowboys.
idinkido : 8/11/2017 2:06 pm : link
Cowboys are bottom feeders.
Great job Emory not much to argue
Bluesbreaker : 8/11/2017 3:28 pm : link
But did you make this prior to the 6 game suspension ?
I think we take the division with 11 wins and its all
predicated on health and the O-line
