but the OL and the backups, looked like crap....
Big difference playing against yourself, and against guys trying to win a job....
There was nothing there to bolster any confidence in this line.....next week and the week after, with Eli out there, they better step it up.....
Not too bad, actually. He only played about half the 4th Q, perhaps even less, but he seems to have pretty decent instincts. The consensus seems to be that he even played better than Johnson. While I do want to see how he does in the next few preseason games, I think I would be OK with the Giants only keeping Webb as the back up, rather than keeping three QBs so they could open up a roster spot to keep an additional WR (Rudolph?).
Indeed Marty. I'm very encouraged by what I saw from Flowers tonight.
It's the first preseason game. Not ready to mail it in on the OL just yet.
Strong arm, got the ball out quickly with a quick release, some good mobility, locked on to his first option a little, but gradually started going through progressions. showed good touch on some of the shorter passes.
Next stop - ring of honor?
:)

in PP. He did a great job. His footwork, kick step and movement is much more fluid and controlled. And when he gets his hooks in, it's over. He looks leaner, quicker and much more confident without sacrificing any of his strength. Still very early. Everybody take a deep breath.
Next stop - ring of honor?
:)
I fuckin hope so, Vinny.

I agree. I thought Flowers looked really good. His footwork looked much better as did his hand placement. I was really encouraged. The qb made the first team o-line look bad.

Thanks for the review of Flowers. I know it is a process and the more reps he gets the faster the transition will take.
Geno Smith was Geno Smith - a couple of good passes followed by a boneheaded mistake.
I honestly see no reason to keep either of them.
Initially, I thought that Webb wouldn't get enough snaps to get an accurate assessment of his abilities, which was the case tonight where he barely got to play in the 4th quarter. Well, I say for the next three games, if Eli's not in the game, I hope Webb is. I've seen more than enough of Smith and Johnson.
Obviously there were more pass pro breakdowns than we wanted to see, but it's also going to be much different when teams are accounting for Beckham, Marshall, Shepard and Engram. It's a bit easier to move downhill and not worry about the guys behind you when they're mostly backups.
I think we might have something with Ellison. If he's going to be able to make those chain-moving catches, he'll be well worth it. He's not going to be a playmaking TE - that's going to be Engram - but I wouldn't be surprised if he became a Boss type pass catcher and provided a safety valve.
Also important to remember that Eli is going to be better at reading defenses pre-snap than guys like Johnson/Geno. He'll be better at figuring out where pressures are coming from and where his hot reads are.
That being said, it was nice to see the Gints in action again after 8 long months without the team I love.

Funny you say that. Would it really be that bad if we had Webb as our back up? Eli goes down, we are fucked anyways. Might as well have the kid (and more competent looking player) get some minutes.

I thought that was unlikely until this game. He really didn't look that different from/out of depth relative to the other guys. He actually looked better.
Geno Smith -- heaven help us -- at LEAST looked like a pro who's seen some live action. Not clear that his pick was on him. I want to hate this guy, but he CLEARLY outplayed Johnson.
Webb -- looks talented, but raw. Prototypical size, big arm, quick release, moves well. ALREADY looks better than Johnson. The tools are there. We'll see.
Travis Rudolph -- Don't think he makes it. Looked awful on returns, and not much better in the receiving game.
Nat - the Fizzle - Berhe. Enough already. When he's not leading with his melon, he's tripping over his feet or looks lost in coverage. I'd be worried if he made the team, but he'll hurt himself before the opener.
1st team D looked very good and ready to pick up where they left off last year.
Landon Collins is in beast-mode already
Kerry Wynn -- was everywhere making plays.
Bromley showed "starter" promise
Darian Thompson - played with the 1s, but didn't make any plays.
The 1st team OL is still the big question mark, and that didn't change tonight. But it's hard to judge them in pass protection without Eli and the starters in there.
Ereck Flowers -- according to Carl Banks, the first sack wasn't on him -- and Johnson kind of walked into it. Still hard to know if he's much better. Banks said he had decent night.
1st team OL run blocking -- not encouraging, but without Eli in there, Pitt's 1st team D didn't fear Josh Johnson at all.
Perkins had little room to run. Gallman and Abdullah, behind the backups, had even less.
That said, loved seeing them convert a short yardage situation BECAUSE THEY HAD A FB (S. Smith) to lead block. It makes a difference. I'd keep this guy over Huseman, and certainly over Tye.
NONE of the WRs impressed (given that OBJ, Marshall and Sheppard didn't play).
Ellison -- looked good. Hope he stays healthy.
Engram -- had a quiet night with one catch. Howard Cross says he's doing a nice job blocking which is VERY high praise -- HC doesn't dish that out lightly.
J. Adams -- looks good, too. Kid's got a lot of potential.
Tye -- ugh. Ran right by a guy who went in un touched and sacked his QB. Not sure what his assignment was.
Lacosse -- didn't get in till the end with Webb. Didn't get to show much. Likely not his fault.
Then Backup OTs looked raw as hell. Long way to go for both Biswo and Wheeler.
Donte Deayon -- muffed a punt which lead to a TD. Won't help him make the team.
BJ Goodson -- still catching up to the speed of the game. He just needs some more time, but I think he's gonna be fine/good.
Michael Hunter -- looked like he might make the team.
Rosas -- nailed a 52 yarder with ease, and a shorter one too.
Nugent -- made his kicks, too, but I'm pulling for the rookie with the big leg.
We just need this OLine to be decent, and we're in business. Obviously, it'd be great if they could be good, very good, or great. But we don't *need* that to be the case to be a good and improved offense from last season. Just stay healthy. That's the key.
Agree on Johnson, I would rather see Geno Smith and Webb.
However, if can also catch those "I'm not covered" short zone passes with ease he give Eli a quick 1st down all season long. Same goes for our RB's out of the backfield. When you have the weapons and speed that we now have, you can't cover everyone well. Eli can have his BEST YEAR ever if we stay healthy and just keep moving the chains.
If our defense is rested, gets the offense turnovers or good field position, we'll score in the redzone this year.
That being said, it was nice to see the Gints in action again after 8 long months without the team I love.
Well, his name is Doomster. With that name, it would be a bit odd if all his posts were cheery and upbeat.

It's not all or nothing. What if the veteran starter had to miss 4 games and 1 or 2 wins is the difference in playoffs or not. That is just one scenario where it's not all or nothing.
We'd all love Webb to just naturally win the job and be the only backup, but it's would be ridiculous to not keep a backup with some experience if you don't think the rookie is ready. Only the coach's really know
I thought Blake had a horrendous game at CB, getting beat numerous times. Couldn't really get a handle on Hunter, saw he made a couple of tackles but besides that, watching on TV makes it hard to see individual play.
Our young OTs had a shaky night, especially Wheeler. It was good they were able to get considerable reps but again, solely based on last night,Wheeler isn't ready to be the backup LT. Now if Flowers were to go down,I'm not sure who would replace him (Pugh LT,Fluker LG?) but with 10 days until the Browns game,it might be a good time to bring in a veteran OT (Clady?) to take a look at.
Overall, kids got a chance to play, only one injury (Ihenacho- hammy), and 1 preseason game closer to Dallas.
I know that is what fan boards are for, and if you wanted you could draw as many positives and negatives from that game.
So let me say, " I know it s only the first preseason game, but.
I saw lots of positives.
I thought Richburg played like crap he just doesn't anchor well when someone is on his nose. And I don't think PUGH was much better. The tackles and Jerry were OK Johnson made them look a lot worse than they were.
If Mac has the guts he should cut JJ tom. He's a total waste worse than a JAG. He makes Nassib look good. Smith and Webb need the practice repost he games will play out the same but having Johnson take practice reps is pointless. He's what 29-30? He's not getting better than what we saw which is NOT an NFL level QB.
I thought the lightbulb went on for Bromley-bring it every play like your life depends on it. He as stout and aggressive.
Draft picks- good early returns
Engram does compete as a blocker the effort is there consistently.
Tomlinson was VERY impressive he's quicker than I expected
Webb showed he has the makings of an NFL QB
Gallman is quick and runs with power - if he had any holes to run through
Moss didn't notice him played late
Biz made some decent run blocks like Wheeler needs tons more strength and technique work
But by now given their draft status they should be a real strength for this team
The middle of the line was constantly getting pushed into the backfield last year, and I saw the same thing again last night.
Pockets collapsing and runners getting hit in the backfield. Until we fix that, I don't care what skill positions we have, we're not going to have a productive offense.
I'm disappointed, and didn't see much encouraging.
Other than that...
And Josh Johnson should be cut today. They are holding back snaps from Webb to give to this guy??
Weston managed a respectable 4 yards of being pushed off the ball instead of the usual 5-6 yards.
Flowers strength is his run blocking, but yet the one run with Ellison on Flowers hip, Flowers got no push/crease against his guy.

And we were without our top 3 WR and our QB so Pittsburgh could stack the box and gear up to stop the run
Quote:
keep in mind our entire 1st string OL with our starting RB couldn't muster a semblance of a running game against a partial 1st string defense. BBI is ready to ball wash Flowers, but if Harrison was playing, he would have tore off Flowers arms when he deployed his clothesline, choke-hold pass defense.

Like I said, if this hadn't been a pattern over the past couple of seasons, I might agree with you.
Your post sounds like wishful thinking than actual improvement.
Deayon dropping the ball hurt him
Ellison and Engram are going to be real studs
Deshaun Amos is not an NFL cornerback yet
Rosas is the real deal!
Geno is way ahead of Johnson -- but who cares
Collins is a stud, so is Tomlinson

I'm new to this football sport so would you be so kind as to when a QB and their top 3 WR are tasked with blocking interior DL and linebackers?

There it is, the guy can't read his progressions. He hasn't thrown a pass in a real game since 2011, they could have
had 3 TD's with a decent QB in there, rather than him.
If Geno can't beat this guy out, he should hang up his jock.
I think his pick was more on the rookie Rudolph than him.
Webb looked okay, they didn't ask him to anything risky.
Short passes in the flat for the most part.

You're something else. Flowers had a very good game, and what you take out of it is "ball washing" and hypotheticals like if Harrison was playing he'd rip Flowers' arm off? Christ. It must suck to be so damn miserable
Spot on, EF looked the part last night.

Not miserable at all. It's awesome to watch Jerry's Kids.
I concentrated on the OL, because let's face it, they are the key to the offense's success....
I have been hearing what a monster Fluker is....how Wheeler and Biz are the future of this line.....well, I didn't see it.....guys blew by Wheeler and Biz, and these were 3rd string guys....Fluker was not the wunderkind that supposedly is in camp.....it's amazing what you really look like when you don't play against your team mates.....
Several posts about how Flowers was excellent....you are not excellent, when you pull a bonehead play and let the guy in front of you have a straight shot at your QB....some how, some way, this guy has to "get it" this year.....and god forbid we have injuries, because the backups are the definition of backups.....
Hard to judge the RB's last night.......but we are looking for a FB, and Huesman whiffed on a 4th down block, and the RB, Abdullah went down, too easily.....
I agree with Klaatu.....the best you can say about Smith was, he looked comfortable out there....neither him or Johnson, look like a guy that can lead this team if Eli were to miss a few games......I say give Webb more playing time, and if he impresses, roll the dice and save a roster spot....
As for those guys commenting about my moniker, I notice none of them commented about what I posted, which is typical....it's a discussion board guys, agree or disagree, or don't bother posting useless dribble....
I just think Mac and Co. feel this will be a redshirt season for Davis. I really don't see them dressing 3 QB's when the season starts for example. He is too raw to be a backup yet.
He has a good pedigree, I think his dad is a football coach.

With Eli and our top 3 WR you would have better pocket awareness combined with the fact that teams would be doubling at least one WR taking one player out of the box that our OL would have to block

Exactly. Smith is who he is. Johnson? Third QB at best.
Save the roster spot IMO
Playing devil's advocate, he also had a handful of throw-aways when it was clear the protection wasn't going to hold up.
Quote:
One of them could have easily been Rudolph's fault. But Smith took a couple of sacks at the worst possible times - which I thought was pretty interesting given the discussion going on in another thread about Matt Ryan in the Super Bowl. In the limited time left in preseason, I would much rather have the Giants work on getting Davis Webb up to speed instead of giving snaps to Smith or Johnson. I'll admit, though, that I don't think the Giants feel that way.
Playing devil's advocate, he also had a handful of throw-aways when it was clear the protection wasn't going to hold up.
Yes, he did, which was smart.
However, the principle argument for keeping Smith (or any vet QB as your #2) with Eli starting and Webb red-shirting is that if, God forbid, Eli got hurt, a vet like Smith would still give us a chance to win some games, while a rookie would not. I don't know that I completely agree with that, especially not with Smith, who's been a below-average QB from day one.
I'd rather see the Giants concentrate on getting their rookie QB ready to play - just in case - freeing up an additional roster spot in the process, instead of relying on a guy who has proven himself to be unreliable in the past.
The one thing that stood out to me was the continued block in the back penalties. On the one hand, the Giants had the second fewest penalties in 2016 with 88, only the Texans had fewer with 87 http://www.footballdb.com/stats/penalties.html?sort=numpen. But, on the other, they were tied with Buffalo and Carolina for the most block in the back penalties with seven (I would have thought it was much more than that but these stats do not include when the penalty is declined or if there are offsetting penalties) - http://www.nflpenalties.com/penalty/illegal-block-above-the-waist?year=2016. I hope they continue to work on that as few things piss me off more than to bring back a great kick return because of an illegal block in the back.
Banks and Papa pointed out a number of times how the OL looked improved and cautioned that it was just one game however.
Where somehow Doomster comes out with the opposite view.
FatMan in Charlotte : 1:11 pm : link : reply
that Doomster was going to claim the OL looked really bad unless they were pancaking people all over the place, partially because of his pessimistic take, but mostly because he doesn't have much of a clue on what to look for.
Banks and Papa pointed out a number of times how the OL looked improved and cautioned that it was just one game however.
Where somehow Doomster comes out with the opposite view.
How dare I watch this game sober.......I will line up a few Polish 13's and rewatch the game ........I just can't understand how I missed such stellar play from this OL.....maybe I'll even wear the blue tints...I mean after reading all the positive comments about this OL in camp, how dare I write what I saw?
I have no illusions about this OL....I hope they play better than last year.....I hope we have a FB and better blocking TE's to help in the running game......I hope this OL gives Eli just a little more confidence in them....
This offense has the potential to score more points, and if the OL doesn't get in it's own way, it can happen....But when I hear such nonsense that guys like Wheeler, Hart, and Biz, and possibly Fluker, are the future of this team, you just have to shake your head.....
This OL has been rebuilding for 7 years, and where are we? Really, where are are we? Does anyone truly believe we have even turned the corner yet? We have invested in Flowers, Pugh, and Richburg......all three are question marks...by now they shouldn't be....and RG/RT looks to be a turnstile of players getting a shot, with the winner being the one that screws up the least, rather than that they are the best.....
We basically did nothing, to improve the OL in the off season......the free agents were too costly, and it wasn't a strong draft for OLmen......The Giant front office has backed themselves into this corner, as far as the OL goes, by lack of action and poor decisions in the past......when you have a franchise qb, you have to protect him.....we waited too long to fix this OL, and it's looking like the choices we have made in the draft, have not been as solid as we had hoped......Flowers has to improve....how much he can, remains to be seen.....Pugh has to show he can stay on the field, but even he is not worth the money some team may offer him next year.....Richburg, has developed this nasty habit of being overpowered and collapsing the pocket.....Jerry/Hart, is what it is.....
So you play with the cards you are dealt....we live and die with these guys.....we hope they can make that 3rd and short.....we hope they can occasionally run a screen.....we hope they can give Eli that extra time on third down....but doing it consistently, is the big question....
Sometimes it comes down to the luck of the draw. The Giants watched players like Nate Solder, Taylor Lewan, and Jack Conklin get drafted right before they were up.
Sometimes you get to pick 9th and you draft Tyron Smith, and then have the luxury of breaking him in at RT for two years before moving him to LT. Sometimes you get to pick 9th and you draft Ereck Flowers, and then due to injury you're forced to start him out at LT when he obviously wasn't ready, and also had to deal with a high ankle sprain on top of that.
Sometimes you get lucky and hit on a UDFA, like the Giants did with Rich Seubert and the Cowboys did with Ronald Leary, but much more often than not you don't.
Sometimes you can afford a top-tier free agent and make him the highest-paid RT in the game, as the Giants did with Kareem McKenzie in 2005. But guys like that don't hit the market very often, and when they do they cost an arm and a leg. You can't keep buying them every year, not when you have other priorities.
So, please, stop with the complaints about how long it's taking the Giants to build a good offensive line. They haven't ignored it. They've made big investments in theirs, and if those investments haven't paid immediate dividends, well, the game's not over yet.
Being a good line isn't just about the 5 guys blocking.
We still showed no signs of being able to run the ball I not so sure Gallman is going to thrive with that upright style of running we shall see .
Wseton Richberg still gets pushed back way to easily and isgonna struggle with big DT's . Flowers did look better hopefully he continues to become consistant .
We will have to rely on Dwayne Harris as our primary punt and kickoff returner I just wonder if they will give Kevin Snead a chance unless he just can't secure the ball at all.Hopefully now that Harris is healthy his return stats will pick back up .
Anybody guess as to who the last WR's will make the team I have hopes on Powe he is not a burner but has decent size and good hands runs good routes .Roger Lewis has dropped a few but does do a decent job as a gunner .
Jerome Lane most likely quite raw but he has nice size and shows some toughness to him . Not sure how long King will be out but I hope he gets healthy soon and gets back out there .
Devin Taylor Okawara are locks I think OO is probably toast Avery Moss showed a little as did Jordan Williams granted his sack was kind of a gimmie but he made a nice
penitration move the play before Kerry Wynn keeps on improving he is also a lock . Didn't notice any key injuries hope that continues .
Being a good line isn't just about the 5 guys blocking.
Agreed. We need like 9 of them blocking...
like someone capable of taking over the QB position in a couple years. i really hope they increase his playing time at the expense of JJ - he's garbage and a waste of time. I was kinda impressed with Geno too ...
cut JJ, give Geno a chance to resurrect his career - and get Webb more reps.
I'd still prefer just 2 QBs, but Geno showed enough to stick around.
