I'm interested to know how Webb looked last night from someone in the tristate area that actually got to see the whole game. Stupid NFLN kept switching to to horrible 9'ers game down here in Florida. In the very few snaps they showed of him that I was able to see, he seemed to move well, and when throwing from the pocket actually looks very similar to Eli mechanics wise. Thanks in advance Guys and Girls! Go Big Blue!!
He only played the last 7 minutes of the game so you couldn't tell much but he outplayed Johnson and I liked him almost as much as Geno....RIGHT NOW! Give him time and we will see.
I thought the 'star" of the QB show was Geno. I came away impressed by his performance. I think he needed a scenery change and I think he can do well here.
Overall, he was much better than I expected. Can't really weigh in on him as a possible #2 QB unless we get to see him with the starters (and the opponent's starters).
Promising enough that I'd rather dump the other QBs on the roster and just go with him for both the cap and roster spot savings. If we're down to #2 QB we're basically screwed regardless, might as well see what we've got, get him some live fire, and save the other resources.
This
I agree that if Eli suffered a season-ending injury then it wouldn't make any difference who the backup QB was.
But there's a big problem with the, "if Eli's injured we're screwed anyway, so why not Webb?" take.
What if Eli's injury is NOT season ending? What if he missed just 1-3 games like half the QBs in the league do? Having Geno on the roster at least gives us a fighting chance in those games and that could be the difference between making or missing the playoffs.
If Webb was put into the same situation Johnson was last night, BBI would be in full meltdown mode right now.

I just don't see that fighting chance being materially different between Webb and Smith. One's a rookie, the other's a failed starter who never achieved much. If the unthinkable were to happen, whoever goes in would be primarily handing the ball off anyway.
To think otherwise would be to believe that Smith was a credible QB whose career was derailed by the Jets, which I don't agree with.

Based on last night I do think Webb would give us a better chance than Geno. What has Geno ever done to show he could do anything? Just because he is a veteran doesn't mean he's any good.
Looked like a possible successor to Eli in a couple of years rather than a placeholder.
But even then, he didn't get rattled and showed good ability to scramble out of trouble.
Definite signs he's got the makings of a real QB

This is simply not true. Besides the fact that the Steelers did not suit up all of their starters, the problem with Johnson was he was insanely indecisive with the ball. There were a number of plays where he had time to make a play and simply held on to the ball. Replays showed on several of them WRs were running open and he simply missed them. In this offense, the objective is to get rid of the ball quickly and both Smith and Webb did a better job of that. Johnson was under pressure because he didn't get rid of the damn ball.
Johnson did NONE of these last night, in his short time Webb showed promise in ALL these areas. Let Geno be the #2, give Webb more reps.
That play was awesome. Marshall possibly makes that catch too. That would be fun to see.
i still have no idea why teams were overpaying for the early QBs while a talent like Webb fell into our laps in the 3rd. He has underrated mobility and a rocket arm.
I'm thinking he was viewed as the least NFL ready and got knocked for playing in Cal's offense ... from strictly a talent perspective, he's not far off from the QBs getting traded up for in the 1st. All of the tools were on display last night
that throw was a thing of beauty ... and exactly why i'm so high on him long term

he already admitted he was "amped up" - which i could see happening when throwing your first pass in NFL action after limited practice reps

but the one throw I found on YouTube shows the same problems he had at Cal. Really poor mechanics. Link - ( New Window )

That may be, but the same problems are there on that throw that were all over his college film.
