Walker is owed roughly $5M the rest of the season and I heard #Mets are eating some to complete deal with #Brewers
Still can't imagine there will be much of a return.
yes, sorry, should have been obvious, but Sandy did turn a 2-month rental of 34-year old Carlos Beltran into a top 10 prospect in all of baseball, so I hoped it was another miracle.
If I looked in NY I'd go to this game, I love minor league baseball and particularly like it when major leaguers play.
I saw a Jon lester rehab start in Pawtucket and that team had Ellsbury still in the minors.
I also so Josh Beckett with the Portland Sea Dogs against the Binghamton Mets (in 2001) in Portland Maine when the Sea Dogs were a marlins farm team. He was electric.
anyway, hope Harvey comes back full strength for 2018.

Anybody hoping the 2013/2015 model is coming back this year after it was announced his arm had atrophied from TOS is going to be sadly mistaken. I do think with an entire offseason he might come back stronger in the spring but trying to measure whatever he's doing now seems pretty fruitless IMO.
I have no faith in Harvey giving us anything next year. My hope is htat he pitches well in September and we trade him for whatever we can get, cause I don't expect anything from him next year. He's just lost it. Even with near premium velocity for a starter (94 mph), he absolutely blew this year. I suppose maybe you could put him in the pen if you want to go that route.

I don't think he's going to reclaim any value this year. We might as well keep him. He's coming up on a walk year. He's going to have incentive to come into spring in the best shape of his life. With no surgeries this offseason maybe he has a shot. I also still think worse case scenario he's a setup man for us next year in the pen. I wouldn't give him away for nothing yet.
Definitely hyperextended. Good thing for Harper is he's not a NY Met. Otherwise, he'd probably have to amputate his leg. Since he's a Nat, probably just a few days off.

I thought hyper-extension as well. Mainly because of the pain he was in.
for his job, pinch hits for Smith 2nd night in a row, at this point game should be about the kids and at-bats in unique situations.
Yet, he was clearly willing to give up another run by playing the defense back with a runner on first and third and no outs in the bottom of the eighth. LOL. Even Gary and Keith can no longer contain themselves as they even question what the fuck he is doing. Worst manager ever.
How hasn't there been a directive from the front office

there was speculation he forgot how many outs there were. a player forgetting is one thing a manager forgetting is another way worse thing.
GM: you probably have to go back to Cashen and even he sucked the last few years. So maybe Johnny Murphy? Plus, look at how many GMs Mets have had since Wilpons took over: Harazin, Joe Mac, Duquette, Phillips, Omar, Sandy. Compare that to Cashman with the Yankees or Sabean with the Giants.
Manager: Booby V was smart but too crazy. So I would say Davey Johnson or maybe even Gil Hodges.
That's a big problem with this organization: poor hires and volatility at the top.
The difference is Walker was not worth risking a QO this offseason, so at least get something for him since this season is over. Bruce they could QO and potentially get a compensatory draft pick further adding to the maximum the Mets can spend in 2018 Draft. However, give past tendencies they will blow most of the picks on relievers, 4th OF, and utility players.
The Mets did not receive cash, they sent the Brewers cash. From Newsday:
"The restructuring of the Mets continued Saturday night when second baseman Neil Walker was traded to the Brewers in exchange for a player to be named.
The Mets also included cash in the trade to cover a portion of the $4.7 million remaining on Walkers contract."
They traded him for all the right reason. Him remaining a Met does nobody any good. Other way to look at it. Let's assume Walker was just cut by team X. Show me one Mets fan that would be shouting for the Mets to sign him for the rest of the year for $4mm. If anything, there would outrage if they did.
Trading him is the equivalent of not signing him, and holding him would be the same as signing him as a free agent till year end.

Shecky. I agree your your statement 100%. It's addition by subtraction.

In the case of Walker you're right, but not in the case of Duda (who I left off my list), Bruce or Reed, those three can be difference makers and are/were playing well this year.
they should have had value, at least IMO.
If you knew before the season that the Mets were going to unload Duda, Bruce, and Reed, plus throw in Merandy Gonzalez who was having a great year, and asked you what you thought the Mets could get back would you have Said Ramos and 4 middle relievers?
I don't think so.
So, sure while I agree it's addition by subtraction or they would not have re-signed any of these guys that's not the point. they probably weren't re-signing Beltran either and they get a top 30 prospect for him - none of these guys is 2011 Beltran, but I didn't expect a bag of balls either.
Mets are signing at least one veteran bat. Probably two. Im guessing both for big bucks and that's where the money is spent.
I keep saying Yu Darvish simply because I think the only way you upgrade the rotation is with a TOR starter. Signing backened guys or even guys coming off series injuries Cobb/Lynn likely arent going to help us much. If Thor/deGrom go down next year we will be in a world of hurt all over again. That said, I dont think its likely we go after Darvish. We may just do a "do-over". People will freak out about that but Flexen, Montero, and even "bad Gsellman" got valuable experience this year that should have us better equipped in the depth department.
Sadly, with the Ramos addition and all of the upside arms we added at the deadline, there's a good chance we stand pat on the pen as well. Maybe we add one guy. Im thinking more Joe Smith than McGee though.
Also, Stearns and Mets GM Sandy Alderson both hinted that it may be some months before the two teams determine the player to be named who will go to the Mets in return for Walker.
is the player will be based on how the Brewers do the rest of the way. We know it's NOT a 2017 pick, that was outlawed.
How the Brewers do or how Walker does? The idea makes sense if it's based on Walker but if it's the other way, what happens if Walker hits the DL again soon but the Brewers still make the playoffs?
The Brewers traded for him in hopes of making the postseason. Maybe he helps in the locker room, in the field, or with the bat but ultimately that's the goal. Hitters are so streaky I think it would be difficult to quantify performance.
I assume the Mets have a list of players they can choose from
after the season. And I guess depending on the date (or the rules for PTBNL trades) it could conceivably be a way to either keep a player on MIL's 40 man, or choose after the rule 5?

That's possible. PTBNL must be named within 6 months. Rule 5 draft is in December.
did change the regular draft rules. 2017 picks can be traded the day after the WS, however they can't be PTNL until that time as well aka the player the Mets will be receiving can't be a 2017 pick.
It's not a huge deal but should Dom Smith really be out eating cheesesteaks while in Philly given the public discussion of his weight? Bad optics if you ask me.

Go out and produce and nobody gives two craps.
They do when scouts acknowledged it's impacted his play in the field this season. He's been viewed as a plus defensive player and it's been said his movement at 1b has not been very good this season. Gotta believe that's weight related as he's not injured.
Is kind of silly when Smith himself said this during ST (when he got into better shape)
I was kind of, a little bit uncomfortable toward the end of the year, Smith said. Very tired, and my legs hurt a little bit. I wanted to change my regimen, eat healthier, and not just go on a diet but just change my lifestyle, just have a clean, healthy lifestyle.
847 OPS first half, .706 second half. Rough profile as a "meh" fielding C (tougher than a + defensive catcher because that's a solid backup profile) but he has a shot to be a big leaguer.
Any scouting report on Jeremy Vasquez? As a 2017 draftee after his Junior year at Nova Southeastern his production is surprising even for his experience.

He was a big HS prospect, went to Florida, didn't hit as expected and was about to lose playing time so he transferred to JUCO. I generally don't get too excited about guys college guys mashing at that level (especially short 1b) but he's probably someone we should keep an eye on. awful on the field, awful in the minors = you suck in the front office.
of course the injuries explain a lot of it as do the graduations of Smith and Rosario, but not all of it.
I know there will be no GM regime change though, I read Alderson expects to be with the Mets in 2018 but I have heard no formal announcement. I did read some speculation that they'd move Sandy up to Team President or something and make Ricco GM, but haven't seen it formalized.
I'd cut the cord on the whole program.
Throw a ton of cash at DePo or Chaim Bloom, Jason McLeod from CHI/BOS, or Jared Porter.
Franchise winning percentage this year.
That doesn't mean much typically. But they have loaded up on safe, college ready organizational fillers as opposed to long shot reach for the star types. So the lower minors SHOULD be good.
Winning franchises tend to produce winning players. They expect to win. They learn to win. They don't accept not winning. You 'sustain success' via your winning system.
It's been a slow leak. But it was visible, you could see it coming the past several years. And nothing was done to infuse the system. That's a really big problem, at least in my humble opinion.

Neil Walker is being traded to brewers
I read on twitter the Mets received a signed photo of Dan Plesac. LOL.
holy shit, is that true?
What?
Are you kidding?
Why would they?
They have Castro.
It would take a lot more than Walker to get their top prospect in the minor leagues heh
Walker is owed roughly $5M the rest of the season and I heard #Mets are eating some to complete deal with #Brewers

Doesn't make sense as he is not a reliever with a live arm
Isn't that usually the case if it's a player from this year's draft or have the rules changed?
So tell us who it is. ;) Position player? Pitcher?

To be honest, haven't hear a thing. Not expecting much of anything. Just glad for him to go and be able to play meaningful games.
This would be devastating for them (obviously).

I defended them on the Bruce trade, but it's getting harder.

I fully admit I'm not a prospect expert, and Sandy gets paid to do this for a living so my criticism is probably unfounded, but:
Jay Bruce
Addison Reed
Neil Walker
Merandy Gonzalez
for 4 middle relievers and a TBD who looks like a bucket of sunflower seeds is not a solid return.
Trading him is the equivalent of not signing him, and holding him would be the same as signing him as a free agent till year end.
