WR Odell Beckham Jr.
August 14, 2017
Q: How does this training camp feel different for you, as opposed to other years?
A: Well first, this is going to be my fourth year going into this offense. I came in with [Head Coach Ben] McAdoo and weíve been working on it, developing it, each and every year itís gotten better. So, thereís that in itself and just personally, the way that I feel mentally, physically, spiritually right now, Iím just in a better place. Iím in a real good place. So, things are flowing, just keep continuing to push them in the right direction.
Q: Did you see the manifestation of being in a better place the last couple of days with the one-handed catches and the dancing during practice?
A: Iím just in a different place, I donít even know how to explain it. I donít even feel like Iím here sometimes. My mind is just out of that. But like I said, just trying to get better each and every day. We talk about it, one percent. So, what can I do to get one percent better than yesterday? And thatís obviously the goal. If you stayed the same, you didnít get better at all. And if youíre not getting better, thatís not why Iím here. So like I said, Iím just trying to get better.
Q: Do you know why youíre in a better place right now?
A: Life. You get older, you grow, things happen, incidents and things changing. So, I think itís just growth, which is a good thing. I feel like we all can grow and the moment you stop growing, youíre not really getting any better as well.
Q: What have you learned about McAdoo as a head coach?
A: He loves to win, I know that for sure. He loves to win. And he loves to coach us. Itís just, you know, right now weíre in camp, youíve got so many young guys. Second year being the head coach, I still feel as if thereís a little bit of head turning and whatnot and weíre all growing and weíre all in this together. I love being with Coach McAdoo, this is my fourth year. I remember when I came in my rookie year, he was all over me and now we have a certain relationship from a respect level. I pray that this is our biggest year yet.
Q: What goes through your mind during that split second when you have to decide if you are going to use one or two hands on a catch?
A: Honestly, today before any of it happened, I told them what I was going to do and it just happened. I feel like yesterday Ė I told the receivers in the room, I said, ĎI donít know what happened, I just kind of clicked out.í Like I said, Iím in a different place right now and he threw the ball and I was like, ĎIíve seen this before.í It felt like it was like a dream. Just being able to have that confidence and come down with those plays. I try and bring a lot of energy to this team, especially to my wide receiver room.
Q: How much do the coaches tell you to use two hands?
A: Youíre supposed to catch the ball with two hands, obviously. I know that as well. Sometimes it just happens. If you catch it, hey, great play. But theyíll definitely still sit there and be like, ĎUse two hands.í
Q: Did they tell you to use two hands after your one-handed catch yesterday?
A: I donít remember hearing it yesterday. I think I jogged back slow, that way they can maybe forget about it and go to the next play. Iím not trying to teach the kids out here to use one hand. I was taught growing up to use two hands.
Q: Do you like making spectacular plays better than regular ones?
A: Get the job done. Thatís just where Iím at, just get the job however you can. If Iíve got to fight and scrap for it, whatever Iíve got to do to come up with it, it just has got to be mine. Thereís just no other way to put it.
Q: When making one-handed catches, can having the other arm free work to your advantage?
A: Yeah. Thatís really what youíre doing Ė when your fending them off with this arm, youíre trying to keep them away in a space. But with that being said, thereís been a lot times in the past three years where I didnít necessarily make the play because Iím trying to fight off a defender. And not so much youíre trying to fight them off anymore, itís just go get the ball. Let them make a play on you. So, itís really crazy, you know, youíre running these deep routes Ė or anytime the ball is coming to you Ė itís a split second of decision that could last a lifetime. So, Iím just working on catching everything that comes my way, making sure I donít have any mental errors, mistakes. Just be the best that I can be.
Q: How long do you feel youíve been in this different place? When you got to training camp?
A: No, when I was just training in Los Angeles. After the season, just the buildup of it all, the pain, everything that I turned into positive energy allowed me to be where Iím at today. So, just in a good place. Just got to keep it there, keep it going.
Q: Where would you stack this wide receiver group against the rest of the league?
A: I guess Iíve got to let them decide that. Weíre just going to be the very best, Iím going to be the very best me that I can be, Brandon [Marshall] is going to be the best him, Shepís [Sterling Shepard] going to be the best and the rest of the receivers in our room. Obviously, the goal at the end of the day is to be the best. I feel like you want to write the best story, I want to make the best, everything is supposed to be the best. If youíre not doing it to be the best, I donít know why youíre doing it. So, yes the goal at the end of the day is to be the best receiving corps in the league, but we have to work for that and be able to earn that title.
Q: Are you alright if your numbers have to decrease a little bit with the presence of Marshall and Shepard?
A: See that banner? Thatís all I care about. Honestly, thereís one, two, three, four [championship banners] in here. I donít where theyíd put the fifth one, but theyíre going to have to make room because we need it. Weíve got guys, Brandon coming in, Shep, weíre trying to win games. Weíre trying to win games, weíre trying to put up points, the defense trying to not give up any points. I told the defense earlier, I said, ĎMy mentality is, weíre trying to outscore yíall. Yíall make a stop, we make a score.í They score, we score. Itís 2-1 on us now. Offense is up one on you guys. Weíre fighting against the defense. I feel like we have one of the better defenses in the league. I donít know if itís the best, but itís definitely up there. And again, just like them, theyíre going to work to be the best defense that they can be. So, itís just about being the best. Iím excelling at the highest level and Iím competing.
Q: How much did the loss to Green Bay in the playoffs last season fuel your drive to win a championship?
A: You have no idea. I really thought about it and Iím thinking about it, even growing up, the Giants Ė historical team. The Packers Ė historical team. Lambeau Field, ice cold, perfect conditions, everything that you can dream of and wasnít able to capture the moment. And did it in a horrible way and a way that, you know, I woke up out of my sleep to. But I used that pain, I used that pain and I turn it into positive energy. And I know that I posted it on Instagram the other day, I said, ĎIf you canít see it, youíre going to feel it.í And thatís just how I feel. If you canít see where Iím at, then Iíll make sure that you do.
Q: What music is in heavy rotation on your iPhone?
A: Moneybagg [Yo]. Moneybagg is out there right now. Obviously, you know, I keep the Drake in at all times. Migos is always good. I just love music. Music is what feeds my soul. Kendrick [Lamar]. Everybody, theyíre doing their thing right now. So, just trying to enjoy it, use that in practice and get me hyped and be able to go out and do what I do.
Q: Is ĎDancing with the Starsí in your future?
A: I donít know about that. Iím not a choreography dancer.
