NFT: Darryl Strawberry just trashed Mets

giant24 : 9/12/2017 10:55 am
Strawberry on Bernie and Sid just said he loved Steinbrenner and the way he stood by his players no matter what. Then said he wants nothing to do with the Mets, they dont back their players and thoroughly disrespected Ray Knight and Gary Carter. Never heard this before.

Also just said he hates Mike Lupica lol - said he would dump him in a trash can if he wrote about his family and personal life.

Great interview. Strawberry sounds great and is a great story teller.

Also doing great things for helping folks with addiction.
Hating Lupica

makes me like Darryl even more. Strawberry seems like his life is in order now and I'm very happy for him. The Mets ownership has never been classy so I am not surprised there is no love there.
Yeah, good old Daryll.

Love the way he trashes the Mets after he let them down with his drug and alcohol addiction, and then spent an entire season while with the Mets talking about signing with the Dodgers, which he eventually did. As I Met fan I do not have a whole lot of love for him.
We're still waiting on that Seaver statue

In this big beautiful ballpark. So I can't argue with him
There's a nice tribute to Seaver in the "museum" area

to the right when you walk into that atrium area at CitiField. Maybe not a statue, but it's nice. (Seaver is my all-time favorite Met.)

I love the Mets, and have great memories of and fondness for Darryl. These stories suck to hear, but they're not surprising. There's a way to do things as an organization, and a way NOT to ... and the Mets have had moderate success over their existence while seeming to NOT do a lot of things right. It's simply not what I'd call a "class organization."

Again, I'm a die-hard Mets fan, but one without blinders to reality.

The Mets need to clean house, right now, from the manager down to the trainer(s). They have talent in place, with potential, but what's the saying about insanity? Or stupidity? Or both?

Just really do not want to see the same shit happen now, year after year until guys like DeGrom and Sydergaard are well into their 30s and/or pitching elsewhere, saying similar things about the Mets as an organization.

The Mets are so cheap its sad. In a city full of wealth, we have penny pinchers as owners.
Steinbrenner stood by his players no matter what?

Like Dave Winfield, Reggie Jackson, HIdeki Irabu? Sounds like revisionist history to me! In fact, I can't think of an owner who was more likely to trash his own players than George.
Well

not defending the Mets here, their negative attributes are well chronicled, but Strawberry was a junkie alcoholic during his Mets tenure, not sure how much of it he remembers accurately.

What an era, my favorite athletes growing up, Strawberry, Gooden, LT, Tyson, to name a few, what a bunch of wasted talent (not in LT's case, but he still not a role model).

That era and growing up idolizing athletes like them is why I don't give a shit about athletes anymore. Root for laundry and next man up.

To sell their team
What's not clear is if he is upset with

their treatment of players while they were on the Mets, or after their careers were over. Either way, what is he talking about with Carter and Knight?

My guess with Knight is trading him away immediately after he was WS MVP. Sorry Darryl, but that is how the game is played. It's a rough business.
