WR Odell Beckham Jr.

September 27, 2017

Q: What was your reaction to Giantsí President and CEO John Maraís comments?

A: We talked.

Q: Did you apologize to Giantsí President and CEO John Mara?

A: No. I said we talked. Mr. Mara and I talked.

Q: Going forward, what does that mean to us that you and Giantsí President and CEO John Mara talked?

A: He and I talked. We had a discussion Ė private discussion in his office. We talked about it Ė him and I.

Q: Do you feel like you embarrassed the organization?

A: More myself, I guess. Only thing is just causing the penalty for the team. Thatís really it. I donít even know if they knew to call the flag or not because the look of confusion on their face was, ĎDo we throw the flag or not?í And then, it was kind of just like, they threw the flag. So, only regret is causing us 15 yards, having to cover a long kickoff. Thankfully, we didnít have any setback from there. Covered the kickoff well.

Q: Will you choose a different form of celebration going forward?

A: (Nods head yes).

Q: Do you think you were out of line with your celebration?

A: I donít know. I donít think any of us know the rules on what you can do celebrating. They put in a new celebration thing to kind of make it seem as if players can celebrate and then you celebrate and you only have 40 seconds. So, if you celebrate for 20, you have 20 seconds to run on and kick (the extra point), so I donít really know. I donít really know how it works, but I do know going forward I have a lot better celebration.

Q: Was the celebration improvised?

A: Iím talking about Tampa now.

Q: Was your celebration a response to President Donald Trumpís comments?

A: I was just telling him, Iím talking about Tampa.

Q: How do you balance your passion for the game with showing respect?

A: I felt pretty good all year, pretty much all offseason. Until youíre 0-2, weíre down 14-0 in the fourth quarter and itís just, itís time. Itís time to win games. Itís time to make plays and I just like being a spark and some energy for this team and I know that that touchdown and the one after it put us in good position. But itís just the little thing of getting that penalty. Just canít do it. Just doesnít need to be done and thatís really the bottom line.

Q: What challenges do the Buccaneers defense present?

A: They have a good defense in my opinion. (Vernon) Hargreaves is a corner who Iíve been going against since college. Brent Grimes, I like. I think T.J. Ward just got over there and heís a hell raiser in my opinion Ė a guy you have to watch for and, I mean, up front, Iíve been to the Pro Bowl with (Gerald) McCoy. Iíve watched him. Iíve watched his film. Heís trouble. They have some real good linebackers over there. Iím not going to give Kwon (Alexander) because I went to school with him. Heís a phenomenal player. Him, Kendell Beckwith over there. These are guys who Iíve played with and know what theyíre capable of. They have a very talented group. Itís just time for us to get a win and really the biggest focus is on ourselves right now.

Q: How do you get points on the board earlier?

A: We were in the red zone five times, I think, and came away with two touchdowns and it was in the end. Itís just about scoring touchdowns. Thatís the bottom line. The game comes down to scoring touchdowns. Field goals arenít going to get it done. You can get down there five times, kick five field goals. Thatís 15 points. They score twice, theyíre down by one. Itís about touchdowns and thatís what we have to do.

Q: Does scoring a lot of points in the fourth quarter give you confidence going forward?

A: I donít know if it was the fourth quarter. I feel like we moved the ball all game up and down the field, just couldnít put it in the end zone. Like I said, itís just the bottom line is getting touchdowns.

Q: Are you a desperate football team?

A: I donít know what desperate means. Iíve never been desperate in my life. And I know that weíre not desperate, but we do need a win. Period. Now. And thatís the plan.

Q: Do you still believe in this club?

A: I wouldnít be here if I didnít believe in us. Itís just a matter of putting everything together, finishing drives. All the little things. Details, details, details, winning.

Q: Is receiving yards an area you feel that you can capitalize on against the Buccaneers?

A: I mean, our defense gave up a lot of running yards and it usually doesnít happen. So, I donít know if itís a one-time thing, if theyíre susceptible to giving up passing yards or what, but I know theyíre a good defense and I know that they just lost last week. Correct. So, theyíre going to come out with some intensity, fired up. Theyíre at home. Theyíre going to come out to get a win. So, we just have to play our best football.

Q: What did you intend with the celebration?

A: Iím really focused on Tampa.

Q: Do you want to clarify your celebration any more?

A: No. We can just move to Tampa because thatís the only thing thatís important right now.

Q: Youíre not on the injury report this week. Does that mean youíre fine?

A: Iíve been playing the past two weeks, so Iím alright.

Q: Did you feel your performance last week is an indication that youíre fine?

A: Just getting better. Have rehab today. Doctor comes in tomorrow, Friday. Itís just the same thing over and over again. So, until that tape comes off my ankle, itís the only way Iíll be able to tell you Iím fine, Iím 100%.

Q: Did you talk about your contract with Giantsí President and CEO John Mara during your meeting?

A: I donít know if that has to do with Tampa, really.

between Beckham acting like a jerkoff and Eli throwing a pick or taking a delay of game penalty?

There is a difference between a mistake and willingly and knowingly putting your actions above the team.

McAdoo's presser today talks about the difference between "combative penalties" that take place between the whistle while you are trying to make a play and pre and post snap foolishness that gets the whole team penalized.

So far in this argument the hyper sensitive Beckham crowd has demanded that the rest of us not read interview transcripts and told us how Beckham should be our favorite player. Anything else?

I will remain skeptical of the Giants organization disciplining him until I legitmately see consistent, repeated professionalism on his behalf.

Sal, you do realize that professionalism is subjective, right? You may define it one way, but what matters most is how the NFL defines it. If the NFL wanted to ban celebrations so that the players acted "professional" and required the players to hand the ball to the official, they could easily make that rule and I'm pretty sure OBJ could follow that rule.

The NFL is okay with certain celebrations. They hype and market star players by showing those celebrations over and over. It's not unprofessional for players to celebrate in the end zone because their employer, the NFL, is encouraging and profiting off it.

The problem is they've not defined clearly enough what is and isn't okay.

Either way, to complain about this interview is over the top. The guy is literally trying to move on to the next game and we've got upset fans that he doesn't "get it"? The most professional thing he could do in this moment is try to focus on the next opponent, which he is clearly trying to do. He answered a few questions regarding the celebration, then clearly stated that he was going to talk about the future.

The guy is acting like a professional football player throughout the entire press conference, demonstrating the right focus and mentality.

You know what a great, tried and true way to talk about the upcoming opponent is on a Wednesday? Donít do anything dumb to draw attention to yourself the Sunday before. The fact that people are actually defending the blurred lines in the celebration rules is pretty mind boggling....
Some of you need to realize it's not 1966 or 1986

Players are under scrutiny for every action 24/7 365. They make millions and have endorsements. These aren't guys who have to paint houses to make ends meet or can can raise hell with no one knowing. LT was a piece of crap and there were many just like him in his era, but there was no social media to give you instant information.

Beckham is the least of the Giants worries
LT has nothing to do with this argument
Chris684 : 9/27/2017 6:34 pm : link
NOTHING.

Of course it's not 1986, who thinks it is?

There are 53 men on this roster and dozens more over the last 3 seasons, yet only one name constantly makes headlines for acting like an idiot. Hard to believe but apparently the modern day athlete CAN control his actions, some choose not to.

The funny thing about this argument is just 2 days ago Beckham told anyone who will listen that he does what he wants consequences be damned. If you can get behind that as a fan of the team, go ahead I guess.

I didn't say anything about Beckham following those comments.

I've come to his defense on this thread because this thread was about his press conference today. He handled it like a professional should.

You want to kill him for what he did on Sunday, go to the post-game thread and do it, or go to any of the TONS of threads about it since. Why criticize him on this thread for the approach he took in this interview? He's on the right page now - can we get behind him and support him or not?

Is his "sin" committed on Sunday so unforgivable that we can't root for him now? Does defending his approach TODAY make one hyper-sensitive?

"Hyper sensitive Beckham crowd" - are you referring to the people who are rationalizing that what he contributes to the Giants outweighs the annoyances caused by his TD celebrations,

. . . or are you referring to the people who thinks the best wide receiver in the NFL should be traded because he caused his team to kickoff from the 20?

who criticize odell don't understand that without him and with an average receiver in his place, we are 3-13 the last few years. he's certainly a bit odd and immature at times, but he's a generational talent.

his prime years are being wasted by a risk taking, slow as molasses QB who needs picture perfect conditions to excel
Believe it or not, I can both recognize....

The hate for Odell.. Its reminds me of the hate for Lebron.. Yeah he is Hollywood as all hell but he is the most entertaining athlete of this era. And minus two meaningless 15 yard penalties and the josh norman game this kid has done nothing but great things his whole career.. Maybe they dont like his hair? Or his cool dance moves? Idk but the Odell hate is strange and not warranted IMO

he creates clicks when he screws up so the media just harps on it over and over and over again...

how many stories were writte. about him visiting a sick kid because it was his dying wish? how many hours did sports media talk about it? 5 mins?

odell dances on the field, how long do they talk about it? 3 or 4 days?

evwrything he does bad will always be heightened because people love to hate him and he is a star in new york...

A lot of it is just middle-aged men who live really boring lives and have nothing better to do. Odell is a 24 year old who is one of the best athletes on the entire planet and has the world in his hands right now - it's a lot of jealousy.

Of course it's fair to point out when his actions on the field hurt the team - they do and he needs to know better. But beyond that, a lot of the above and beyond vitriolic attitudes you see are likely rooted in jealousy towards a guy who has a lot of things these guys don't.

Is it the way he was raised? Is it the millenial mindset? Is it really the organization that created this monster? He just doesn't get it.

I'll say this - arc paints a lot of middle aged men with the same brush. I'm middle aged and I don't run around crying about 'typical millenial' behavior. That has nothing to do with being middle aged, it has something to do with being a self-righteous prick.

Don't mention that name when discussing football.

Totally unreasonable.

It's not shitting on anyone, it's willingness to call a spade a spade. Beckham is a big boy, I'm sure he can handle some warranted criticism without the same people showing up everywhere to defend his every misstep.

Alt user lolol.....gotta love it. I am done with this thread. There is no point arguing it anymore. If you are content to be comfortable supporting a guy who makes a mockery of himself and the team, just because he scores he scores a lot of touchdowns, then so be it. Iíll take the Nicks/Cruz approach myself in my receivers, even if it means sacrificing some talent. Hopefully the organization clamps down hard on this guy and it has a happy ending for all involved.

I'd like you to go BACK to the OP on this thread - and point out where you feel Beckham warrants criticism.

Unless you feel it's incumbent upon everyone to repeat, over and over again, the same discussion regardless of the topic at hand.

One trick ponies - you've got nothing else to discuss, so you're stuck on the same note.

There's a ton of posters here who can admit he made a mistake and that he's a mercurial but supremely talented individual. And then there's idiots who claim they'd sacrifice "some" talent for a classier player.

Again - if you saw Sunday's game - and walked away thinking 'we'd have been better off without Beckham on the field and with someone more reserved' - then maybe football isn't your thing.
i am sorry i loved nicks and cruz

same strahan that wanted to be traded because he didnt like coughlin's rules?

same strahan who yelled at a woman reporter while eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

Jeter is the only athlete on the planet who was able to be a womanizer and still be considered a class act, i tip my hat to him i dont know how he did it
The real solution for beckham is to simply win
nygiants16 : 9/28/2017 9:48 am : link
if he wins a superbowl everyone will love him...

strahan is revered because he won that last superbowl...

if manning doesnt have 2 superbowls you think he is loved this much?

Again, this will sound like a defense of Beckham but it isn't
jcn56 : 9/28/2017 9:51 am : link
That's what makes guys like Jeter and Manning so special. They're selfless. They're class acts.

I wish all pro athletes were a lot more like them - but if you think they're anywhere near the norm and not the rare exception, you've got another thing coming.

Point is - Beckham is not a bad guy. He's done some stupid, selfish things, and he needs to cut them out. But he's being painted as some sort of villain, and when you consider for a second that without him we're royally fucked, listening to posters repeat ad nauseum how he's hurting the team makes you want to gouge your ears out.
So now we're slut shaming a single....
Crispino : 9/28/2017 9:52 am : link
Derek Jeter to defend OBJ? Fucking hilarious.
Jeter had the good sense to not get married
jcn56 : 9/28/2017 9:54 am : link
Another one of those things you just figure is so frikkin simple - if you can't lay off the ladies, don't bother getting married when you're a young professional athlete.

And yet time and time again, the same damn thing.

You have to tip your cap to Jeter for making the most obvious common sense move in the world.

Derek Jeter to defend OBJ? Fucking hilarious.

who was slut shaming him? all i said was he was able to be a womanizer and still be a class act in new york, i give him props...

no one else in this world would have been able to do what jeter did and still be considered a class act, he is once in a lifetime...

what am i saying that is not true?

What if OBJ didn't bother with all the antics?

Reading the transcript it seems like OBJ just doesn't get it. He didn't know that pissing like a dog would be a penalty? Give me a break.

I think its silly to argue whether or not OBJ's penalties are hurting the Giants; of course they are, they're penalties. And now, at this point the refs go into a Giants game looking for OBJ to do something that can be penalized. That's bad enough, that refs are looking for reasons to throw a flag on OBJ, but you also have to consider the fact that he's hurting the Giants with all the calls that won't ever go his way.

Its too late now - after the dog pissing thing OBJ is branded an assclown for the rest of his career. Imagine though if he had come into the league with all his talent and his extraordinary play making without all the antics? He'd be loved by the media, the refs would give him 50/50 calls and all that success would pervade the entire team.

The real disappointment of OBJ is what he could have been without all the assclownery. Sure, he's a freaking electric player and he's the best WR we've seen as an NYG. But, oh boy, as great as he has been, just imagine what he could have been!
16, come on now, that's ridiculous.

There were plenty of Yankee fans that didn't like Jeter. Jeter isn't Odell and isn't as polarizing, but there will be haters even for people like Jeter and Eli. Kinda sad, but it's reality.

Can't believe the OBJ hate among Giants fans. This guy literally is the savior of this team's hopes and chances. Single-handedly he alters every team's game plans against us and gives us a chance to win.

He works as hard as anyone. He cares as much as anyone. He tries his best and comes up short less than most WR in the entire league.

He literally should be every Giants fan's favorite current player for how he impacts the game. Top 3 favorite player at worst.

The NFL has a stupid rule about celebrations. It's stupid because it's unclear. OBJ points out that the refs looked at each other with uncertainty about throwing the flag for a moment when he was celebrating. I know watching live at home I instantly was worried he would be penalized, but it took some time for the officials to determine it was a penalty. We had a full conversation about why I was worried before the flag was announced.

It's not clear cut. He didn't do something that was obviously against the rules. He did something that arguably was against the rules, and yes, it cost us 15 yards.

For that, we want to crucify him? Suddenly, out of all the freaking disasters who are currently putting on the Giants uniform, OBJ is the bad guy? I've seen people who want Jones to stay in the lineup at OG. What about his ten yard penalty at the goal line? Did that cost the team? What about Eli's delay of game? It cost the team - should he be replaced?

What's wrong with this scenario?
This kid is a once in a generation talent. Best in the game in my opinion hands down. But he's also an asshole and almost impossible to defend. And you don't get to be called a savior at 0-3!

Great argument!

And how do you know this arc? What research has lead you to this conclusion? Or are you just talking out of your ass?

So easy to trigger you. You shouldn't call other people hyper-sensitive...
Not sure how I've been "triggered"

I'm arguing a point about Beckham as it relates to the football team I root for and I have people calling me a miserable f*ck and a jealous middle aged old man. I could care less, I'm just pointing out that it shows your lack of a reasonable counter argument.

I'm 33 for the record. And if I'm so jealous or out of touch with the modern day athlete, why was I one of the few people on this site who was standing up for JPP after many wanted him hung for accidentally and terribly injuring himself while doing nothing wrong?

You want to make the Beckham argument about me or people "like" me because it's easier than for you to admit that one of our best players acts like an idiot most of the time.

That's funny - because this was right in my post for all to see...

Of course it's fair to point out when his actions on the field hurt the team - they do and he needs to know better.

If you took two seconds to take a break from calling everyone who defends anything about Beckham "hyper-sensitive" and packing all of us into one tidy little box that you've labeled, you'd notice that I actually often say he should be smarter and not take penalties that hurt the team.

My issue is with people who can't go one day without complaining about him or suggesting we trade him. It's insane to me that fans spend this much time whining about a generational talent or trying to pin every single thing that is wrong with the Giants on him. But to each their own.
Thought he answered well

and tried to put the whole thing behind himself and the team. Of course the interviewers were trying to bait him into a controversial answer. Part of the game. He is learning and thats good.
