NFT: School Closed Due to Asbestos

NorwoodWideRight : 10/6/2017 11:58 am
What would you do if you had school-age children attending this school?

On Monday, a bunch of parents raised a stink at a meeting of the school board about construction of a new roof on our high school. The parents that attended this meeting were in the know about what was happening due to office staff at the school leaking/whistleblowing about:

1) Removal of asbestos roof while children were present
2) Dust falling in classrooms so thick one parent said "kids could write their names on their desks"
3) Foul odors making children and staff sick

The board assured parents at this meeting that "all was safe" until a question was posed to the acting superintendent: "would you allow your grandchild to attend this school?" The answer was no, and school was closed.

The board pointed to tests done in August and early September on air quality, which showed that only 1 asbestos fiber had been found in a classroom and that all OSHA and NJDE guidelines have been met. Meanwhile, in between testing and after school opened, construction and removal of the asbestos roof continued while children were present in the school.

On Wed. of this week, the superintendent informed parents that the new testing had been concluded and we were awaiting results, which they expected Thursday. School was to remain closed through Thursday.

In the meantime, parents noted on Wednesday that workers at the school were working hard removing load after load of debris all day from the site.

On Thursday night, we got a call from the school that it would remain closed through at least Friday due to "more testing." This was the last we heard.

Now rumors are saying the school will be closed until at least Tuesday. No other information is coming from the school district but parents are pretty freaking peeved. Something stinks here. People are screaming cover-up.

Can’t tell if this is the Shelbyville or Springfield school district. If it’s Shelbyville then I say, let the kids go to school!
I'd be pretty pissed.

I just got a new report from yesterday's testing
NorwoodWideRight : 10/6/2017 12:18 pm : link
This is in addition to asbestos testing. This is air quality testing. They failed. Dangerous levels of chemicals were found in both testing locations. The data sheet shows about 20 or so elevated compounds/chemicals that make it unsafe.

The testing agency recommended school stay closed until additional testing/remediation be done.

Yeah, I'm pissed. The school posted this on their website without an explanation AFTER the acting superintendent got all snippy with us parents, saying that TESTING WAS DONE and everything was SAFE.

Eff her.

I'd contact some local newspapers

It has been in the papers.

I sent something to channel 6 in Philly this morning. The papers only have half of the info. We're getting inside info leaked from teachers and office staff in addition to the reports that have been published. You can't rely on rumor and heresay but some of this is pretty damning stuff. I doubt that, even if the school opens, teachers will report.

This is pretty big shit.

Sounds like the parents had a right to question the current situation and the school looked into it, and is doing the right thing.

Has an expert quantified the risk the students were potentially exposed to? I understand a number of bad elements were found, but were they in a quantity that is harmful?

I'm not a chemist, so I have no idea. There were about 20 chemicals over the residential (and even some over the industrial) limit. They recommended closure. I guess that means...yes? The school district is mum now. Probably because there's blood in the water now.
If it were my kids, I'd want someone's head
jcn56 : 10/6/2017 12:36 pm : link
Might not be reasonable, but someone went out of their way to cover up my children being exposed to an airborne carcinogen? Sorry, no way I trust them to be responsible for any children going forward after that.

Yeah I guess I would just caution wanting to get a pound of flesh if they actually took the right steps. It sounds like there were a few dopes who handled the interactions about as bad as possible, but if they point of fact reacted correctly not sure I personally would go looking for more.

I don't disagree, but the second I found evidence of any sort of cover-up I'd want someone out.

Anyone can make a mistake - they happen, no matter how obvious it might seem after the fact. But school officials who are capable of covering up a health issue are capable of anything, and I don't want those people anywhere near vulnerable individuals (small children, the elderly, the infirm, etc.).
I understand mistakes happen.
NorwoodWideRight : 10/6/2017 12:44 pm : link
But when mistakes affect lives, especially lives of children, and they might have far-reaching effects we don't even know about yet, like:

Extremely elevated levels of ethylbenzine and trimethyl benzine were found in the report (over industrial limits), both are airborne, both on the hazardous substance list due to cancer

Someone needs to pay. And them being quiet about it? That's damning. They know what happens next.

You call hamburgers "steamed hams"?
Greg from LI : 10/6/2017 2:12 pm : link
-Yes, it's a regional expression.

What region?

-Upstate New York.

Really. I'm from Utica and I've never heard of "steamed hams".

-Oh, no, it's from Albany!

I see.
I went there and I turned out fine

Just read all of my posts. Asbestos and all!!
Removing asbestos on a roof is no big deal
Mellowmood92 : 10/6/2017 4:16 pm : link
It's typically in the flashing and is more of a disposal issue then an air quality issue. Your child is most likely not at risk to asbestos exposure. There's friable and non-friable asbestos, and it has to do with the fibers or dust that's emitted when it's removed. Plaster / pipe insulation = bad stuff to be around when it's removed; roofing / floor tile / floor mastic = safer to be around, just don't grind it.

However i question why the hell would they wait until school is in session to do a roof replacement. That NEVER happens. Forget about the removal.. hopefully it's not a hot-applied built-up roof, that's nasty smelly stuff.
Im surprised the construction company was willing to work
steve in ky : 10/6/2017 4:36 pm : link
on it with those conditions. I thought these days Asbestos removal was usually more controlled.

I would be hot if my children were carelessly exposed to it like that.
That school has always been a toilet. Always stunk.
Route 9 : 10/6/2017 5:51 pm : link
No air conditioning. Always loved the Commons area though . A great place for teenagers to socialize (or fight each other). Like 100+ fights our freshman year. 4 before homeroom one day!

I'd get your kid the hell out of that school
Vanzetti : 10/7/2017 11:14 am : link
I know that could be very difficult and upset life plans. But this is your child's health. Most asbestos-induced cancers are deadly. A guy I know died of one at age 31. Would you be able to live with yourself if that happened to your kid and you could have prevented it but didn't?

That said, do not overreact. Wait for the results and educate yourself about asbestos levels.

But I would not send your children back to that school until you know it is safe. If you have to keep them out of school for a month, so be it
