The Devils defeated the Avalance 4-1 in the opener. They were lead by rookies Jesper Bratt (1G,1A) and Will Butcher (3A) who became the first Devils rookie to record 3 points in their first career game.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Hynes play Santini and Butcher over Lovejoy and Prout. Mirco Mueller was second on the team in TOI. Schneider was outstanding with 40 saves in the opener.
Glad to hear this..

I have been a Devil's fan since 1982 when they came from CO to NJ. However, since Lou eventually ran the team into the ground in recent years before leaving, I could barely stand to watch. Now, I cannot even tell you the names of any player other than the goalie.

I admittedly didn't watch as many games over the past three years but this year's club is filled with exciting players. Shero has done a remarkable job rebuilding this team. The defense will likely remain an issue with so much youth but there is quite a bit of exciting talent there with Severson , Butcher, Mueller, and Santini.
Thought about going to this game

Definitely making it a priority to get to a few this season.

I am a longtime Devils fan but admittedly hockey takes a back seat to the other 3 sports but as Giant, Met, Knick fan I'm going to focus more on hockey this year.

How did Hischier look? I'm excited about the young talent.

Hischier played very well despite not picking up a point. He had 6 shots on goal .
Hi guys..

Been a devils fan for years but have not been paying any attention since the draft. How is the team looking? Where is our draft choice playing? Any news appreciated.

Hischier was playing on the second line at center along with Marcus Johansson at LW and Drew Stafford at RW.

The Devils are highly unlikely to make the playoffs but this should still be an exciting season as we get to watch the young players(Hischier, Zacha, Butcher, Severson, Santini, Mueller, Bratt, Quenneville) develop. We might also see 2016 1st round pick C Michael McLeod when he comes back from injury.
I watched a lot of the game
pjcas18 : 10/7/2017 10:44 pm : link
Butcher is better defensively than I thought (in one game) I knew he'd be good offensively, but he was great in his own zone, solid positionally, physically, and breakouts.

Butcher outshone Hischier IMO (who didn't play badly - and Butcher is much older, so no big deal, but Butcher was involved a lot).

Butcher was a very nice surprise. I couldn't have asked for a better debut. Hischier was all over the place and even though he didn't show up on the stat sheet he showed that he belongs. Very quiet game for Marcus Johansson today.
Wasn't able to watch

My son's scout troop is sleeping overnight at the Battleship New Jersey. We caught the game on the radio on the drive down. The atmoshere sounded superb. Will definitely get out to some games this year. Jay you know much about this Jimmy Hayes? Seemed like he was all over the place. I cant remember a Devs team having this many kids make their NHL debut in one day. The fan base has really connected with and embraced the kids and the rebuild. The announcers were raving about Nico and sounds like Hall could have had at least 2 goals as he was was absolutely robbed by Bernier. As a side note Chico is back as the radio color guy.
Oh also sounds like this new scoreboard

Jimmy Hayes is a big physical power forward whose strength is being able to plant himself in front of the net to knock in any rebounds. He nearly had a second goal last night but he was robbed by Bernier. He is better suited for the 4th line but he looked better than I expected last night. He is 27 and had 19 goals three seasons ago. Hayes would have been a guy that Lou targeted years ago as he would have been a perfect fit in their old system.
Lets Go Devils !
