I had this terrible nightmare last night...

Eric from BBI : Admin : 10/9/2017 8:59 am
that the Giants started the season 0-5 and lost four wide receivers in one game, including Beckham, who broke his ankle.

Then I woke up.
Go back to bed

Maybe you can Rip Van Winkle right into next season. That's what I'm doing.
All this weird deja vu is happening....
Chris684 : 10/9/2017 9:04 am : link
2013, last time we played AFC West we started 0-6 but that was easier to swallow because unlike ownership and the GM who put a SB clock in the locker room, we all knew that team was nothing more than the ruins of the run up to 2011 and first half of 2012.

Columbus Day weekend 3 years ago we got smacked down in Philly on Sunday night, pretty much ending that season and losing Victor Cruz's career in the process.

Good advice. Seriously, when I woke up this morning, for a second, I was like, "Did that really happen?"
It has been a season from hell
mac attack : 10/9/2017 9:05 am : link
The regressed defense
The piss poor o-line
The "antics"
The "not surprising"
Not to mention a could heart breaking losses
And now the injuries

I cant see any reason to even watch much more of this, let alone attend any more games. MetLife will look bleak going forward.
Last season was fun
Chris684 : 10/9/2017 9:05 am : link
But there has been a lot of very bad stuff surrounding this franchise since 2011.

It's pretty surreal. I'm still a bit shell shocked.

Mainly concerned about Beckham and his ability to recover his explosiveness. That injury could have altered his life unbelievably. I feel absolutely terrible for the kid.
Yes but at least things are trending in the direction of HOPE
UberAlias : 10/9/2017 9:09 am : link
Nothing worse than being stuck in the purgatory of mediocrity: you win just enough for ordinary coaches and FO staff to keep their jobs but you're not a legitimate contender without a lot of luck and you're not bad enough to vie for a franchise changing QB in the draft.
Has any other team lost 4 WRs in one game?
njm : 10/9/2017 9:10 am : link
This is getting ridiculous.
I always find playing the AFC West the most fun
JonC : 10/9/2017 9:14 am : link
and it's been absolute horseshit seasons in 2013 and now.
When your family tells you to sell all their Giants stuff...
silverfox : 10/9/2017 9:16 am : link
...it can't get any worse. If this franchise wastes the entire year with Eli behind center and keeps fooling themselves that there is something to salvage from this mess, then the nightmares will continue well beyond this season. The question is...do the Mara's keep this band of clowns around for next year (using injuries as their excuse), or will they do what the whole football world knows must be done? I think they need more embarrassing games and half-empty home games to get the message.
Never in all my years did I even consider this

We've all seen bad Giants football.

I can't remember ever being so wrong about a football team going into a season.

I thought this was a legitimate superbowl contender in the NFC.
I'm not old enough to know how bad the 70's were
The_Boss : 10/9/2017 9:25 am : link
But I do remember 2003. I always hoped that would be the worst season of NYG football I'd experience. I'm thinking this year will top that, unfortunately.
I had one too
blueblood'11 : 10/9/2017 9:35 am : link
Then I realized it wasn’t a dream. Since 2011 other then last year we are in the midst of a run of bad football. And in a division where the teams around us appear to be passing us by like we’re standing still is very disconcerting.

I don’t want to compare it to the pre George Young Bill Parcells era where it was 15 years of horrendous football because the situation is different. The owners aren’t feuding. However, this ownership doesn’t seem to have a clear path.

The ownership puts its trust in a GM who builds a team that has no balance. He does a bad job of rebuilding the offensive line. He neglects the tight end position until recently. He spends a ton of money to fix the defense and neglects the fact his quarterback is immobile and teams swarm him like flies to shit.

The owner forces the head coach out and puts its trust in McAdoo who appears to be in over his head. If he is retained are we going to have to watch more ineptitude again next year. When you add it all up this thing is spiraling in the wrong direction and I fear we are in the makings of 15 years of bad football.

Can you get push Sy to get an early start to his draft write-ups? sarcasm off. Going to be a long off season.

I lived through it and there was a lot going on. The feud beteeen Tim and Wellington Mara. Wellington was faithful to his lieutenants to a fault. And a lot of bad decisions were made. Tim expressed his displeasure and felt something needed to be done. Enter the commissioner who put George Young in charge. The rest is history.

This version of Mara I feel to a lesser degree is loyal to a fault as well. His GM has not been able to rebuild this team to where anyone really fears playing them. He put his trust in a neophyte with an aging quarterback and tried to reinvent the wheel and it has gone horribly wrong. Hopefully he will do something that makes sense to turn this ship around.
Well, it actually makes me feel better
jcn56 : 10/9/2017 9:51 am : link
I figured they'd right the ship, go 7-9/6-10, and do just well enough to miss the playoffs, avoid a housecleaning, and get a mid-1st round draft pick.

Here, we're looking at a reboot and a very high pick in a QB heavy draft. This might be the best thing that could have happened to us.

I know everyone looks at it as 'we wasted Eli's prime' - but we got 2 rings with Eli. Peyton managed 2. So did BR. Brees got one. The only one that did better in the same timeframe was Brady. So it's not like his time here was wasted.
...
Mdgiantsfan : 10/9/2017 9:51 am : link
I knew JR or Mac was on this site...now we know their handle lol.

This truly is a terrible nightmare! Add the star DE battling injuries again and the other one who got paid being on a missing poster, and the Oline issues, and Eli the PI, and the list just goes on. The question is when will we wake up from this nightmare?
Normally I wait until after the season
Matt in SGS : 10/9/2017 9:57 am : link
to pick up doing more old game reviews. I think I'll need to dip back down nostalgia lane to make it through this year. So I'll look to crank more up to post throughout November and December.
Nightmare is the right word...
Dan in the Springs : 10/9/2017 9:57 am : link
what we experienced yesterday was an atrocity.

We came in half-dead, on life support really.

What remained was the burial. The fact that it came from a winless team, traveling from across the country in an early game made it complete. The offense was given its excuse for underperforming the rest of the season.

Now we wake up to find ourselves 11 months away from meaningful NYG football. A completely blown year.

Only one thing will keep this season interesting. If Webb could somehow get some playing time, that would pique my interest a bit. I'll still continue to watch the games, but any hope for 2017 was extinguished in the nightmare.
Who knows, maybe Saban takes the offer this time
jcn56 : 10/9/2017 9:59 am : link
Mara throws him the keys, and we see if Belichick was right about his countryman.
...
Mdgiantsfan : 10/9/2017 10:00 am : link
My forecast moving forward:
At Denver (L)
Sea (L)
Rams (W maybe)
At SF (W)
Chiefs (L)
At Wash (L)
At Oak (L if Carr plays)
Dallas (L)
Beagles (L)
At Arz (W)
Wash (W)
Does Tisch have any say on how the team is mnaged??
Rick in Dallas : 10/9/2017 10:02 am : link
I ask that question because I don't believe Mara will make any changes. It needs to start with Chris Mara and the scouting department. Awful job of player evaluation.
This is a nightmare that brings me back to the dark ages of the late 60's and 70's.

If only there was some chance of that happening. But that is not the way the Mara's work. They will jump all over this problem with big words and luke-warm healf measures.

I love the Giants. Always have and always will. But I do not trust Mara to do what has to be done.
Saban is 66

and treated like a God in college football. His brief stay with the Dolphins would be of great concern that he's in no way committed to building an NFL tea, imv.

Actually, I think the Maras had this scenario laid out from the start, and if it works out it would have been their backup plan.

It started by dismissing Coughlin, but retaining the FO and half the coaching staff. A soft reboot. Spend some money in FA, address some holes, hope they can right the ship. Coaches tend to have shorter lifespans than GMs, so it starts at the HC spot.

Worked for a season, didn't last.

Now you're in hard reboot territory. Fire the FO, revamp the scouting department, bring in new blood to oversee the hire of a coach and start from scratch.

The only problem is, what we bring in could be no better, or (crap), even worse than what we've got, but the results merit trying anyway.
Good post. Gosh, what a disaster.

I hope we get one more chance next year with Eli.

Until then, while I will torture myself by watching the Giants games, focus moves on to college football.

Start watching the QB's on the west coast. I know I will.
It seems that past coaching changes
Mike from Ohio : 10/9/2017 10:39 am : link
have always focused on finding a "Giants" type of coach. Someone with ties to the organization, or a long track record of familiarity. They need put those parameters aside and simply find the best GM they can and give them the lattitude to do what they need to do, which includes bringing in their own coach. No retaining loyal staff, loyal scouts or giving them a short list of coaches they can hire.
Mike
blueblood'11 : 10/9/2017 11:00 am : link
I agree totally. The way Mara went about reshaping the coaching staff was Wellingtonesque. That’s the type of thing he would do. When Tom was fired, retired, coerced or whatever you want to call it because it was time, the game has passed him by, he had a nice run, we need a new voice and then keeps the entire staff for the most part who coached under him left a lot of people scratching their heads.

I love Spags he has a Super Bowl ring with the Giants but a lot of people in the know questioned the move and the way the Giants pieced this thing together. It obviously has failed miserably and we can only hope Mara and Tisch take a long hard look at how to rebuild this thing the right way.
