Does Eli Have a No Trade Clause?

Capt. Don : 10/10/2017 11:38 am
I thought he did and then I saw a bunch of people talking about possible trades and I couldnt say for sure.

For the record, even if he doesnt, I dont think we should/will trade him.

But if he has a no trade clause, we can end the discussion once and for all.
Yes

Next Question: If he consents to a trade
Ron from Ninerland : 10/10/2017 11:57 am : link
What are the cap implications if he consents to a trade ? If he's cut we take a cap hit, but if he's traded don't the cap obligations get traded with him ?
Whoever thought that was a good idea
BigBlueDownTheShore : 10/10/2017 11:57 am : link
should get canned. I feel like its unprecedented in the NFL.

No, we would be responsible for the cap hit just as if he were cut, and the receiving team would be responsible for the future salary.

If there's a salary guarantee, then the 2nd team would be responsible for it... a la Brock Osweiler and the Browns. I don't think that applies to Eli.
How does the NFL salary cap work with the cutting and trading of players? - ( New Window )

It's not. Rivers got the same thing, Ben probably did too, so have other QB contracts since.

The issue is more that they never should have given him any extension in the first place, exercising some realism about where they were as a team vs where he was at in his career and divorcing from sentimentality.
What difference does it make ?
Ron from Ninerland : 10/10/2017 12:27 pm : link
What team is going to trade for a QB that doesn't want to come there ? Especially when that QB refused to play for the team that drafted him.

Eli signed the extension in early 2015, coming off one of his best statistical seasons. At the time, there was no reason to believe that McAdoo's offense would turn to shit in just a couple of years, or that the offensive line that the front office had made a major investment in would turn out to be so terrible.

In terms of dumb things the franchise has done over the past few years, Eli's extension doesn't even rank.
The No Trade Clause protects the Player....

from being dealt to a place he doesn't want to go to.
It doesn't protect him from getting cut.

I'm sure its been brought up around here multiple times and I know how unlikely it is. But if Jacksonville wanted to trade for Eli- is it at all feasible with the cap? What would the cap implications be? I'd love to see Eli make one more run and it aint happening here.
At the time, the team sucked and had sucked.
Devon : 10/10/2017 12:35 pm : link
They easily could have played it through 2015 (which also ended up sucking) and then franchised him if necessary after or even traded him (no NTC clause in his previous deal IIRC and the money would have been a lot easier to move around with only one year in play) thanks his recouping value in 2014, as well as still being on the right side of 35.

They made the same mistake the Chargers did with Rivers though and tied a team that needed a close to real tear down with a win-now QB. It was a mistake, objectively.

You say that like absolutely everything about being a fan is not absolutely sentimental. ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. That’s why you follow the team, that’s why the team exists.

We all realize that Eli is in his late 30s and won’t be playing for ever. I’d like to believe that most of us Giants fans have a better appreciation for Eli and what he’s meant to this franchise than you do. He deserved the extension and the NT clause. (He also deserved an offense that matched his strengths.)
If Eli is traded or cut, after this season,
Doomster : 10/10/2017 12:55 pm : link
They have a dead cap of 12.4M.....if he is cut, that can be split over 2 seasons, at 6.2M, if they want to....I don't think they can do that if there is a trade.....

However, they will save 33M over two years in salary/bonuses.....so basically, they will net 20.6M over two seasons......

I am hoping some team makes an offer that the Giants AND Eli can't refuse....hate to see him stay here in this shit show of another rebuild....it would be good for both sides....I think Eli can still play, and with the right offensive line in front of him, can show Reese and the nay sayers, what most of BBI has been saying all along....
Eli would have been better off free of this team, exiled.
Devon : 10/10/2017 12:56 pm : link
Instead he stayed and he has a good chance of his final year here being 1-15 or 0-16, while he gets scapegoated for it (if he even physically survives it) and his HC takes potshots at him all along the way. In the last six years, he's gone from close to a sure thing for the HoF incredibly all the way back to his narrative unfairly being that of a luckier Cutler/Dilfer thanks to this team's failures.

It's not hating on him or not appreciating him to accept that the team blew his window or that sometimes hard decisions need to be made, usually better made under cold terms some fans may not appreciate in the immediate.

On this, we’re on the same page. The extension plus at least a mediocre line would’ve been the appropriate move.

Not really, a few QB's have had them including Peyton.
How much would it suck watching Eli go to a team that is only a QB

Everything about this season sucks more than that would. At least Eli gets something out of it.

doesn't strike me as the type to want to play for another organization just to finish off his career. I think he'll call it a day after next season.
Incredible the amount of people
NYSports1 : 10/10/2017 3:40 pm : link
that are Eli fans over Giants fan and bash ownership, coaches, all other players before getting on the QB. Yea Eli is a giants great but never will I put him over team. The Giants are an iconic franchise bigger than Eli and has been one of the best run and successful franchises with a great league and sports wide adulation but many here prefer the Giants as a team fail before Eli fails.

Eli was paid incredibly handsome by the Giants and taken care off. He was part of 2 SB teams but also part of teams that missed the playoffs a ton. You cannot live off success from almost a decade ago.

Lets not forget we are NY Giants fans. Eli will be here this year, next year, and will groom the future qb in his last year before he retires or moves on. But no chance he is here past that and should not be.

I have zero issue if Eli plays for another team next year or the year after if he feels he can win. But I will always put the Giants over any player. ALways
