I thought he did and then I saw a bunch of people talking about possible trades and I couldnt say for sure.
For the record, even if he doesnt, I dont think we should/will trade him.
But if he has a no trade clause, we can end the discussion once and for all.
No, we would be responsible for the cap hit just as if he were cut, and the receiving team would be responsible for the future salary.
If there's a salary guarantee, then the 2nd team would be responsible for it... a la Brock Osweiler and the Browns. I don't think that applies to Eli.
How does the NFL salary cap work with the cutting and trading of players? - ( New Window )
It's not. Rivers got the same thing, Ben probably did too, so have other QB contracts since.
The issue is more that they never should have given him any extension in the first place, exercising some realism about where they were as a team vs where he was at in his career and divorcing from sentimentality.
Eli signed the extension in early 2015, coming off one of his best statistical seasons. At the time, there was no reason to believe that McAdoo's offense would turn to shit in just a couple of years, or that the offensive line that the front office had made a major investment in would turn out to be so terrible.
In terms of dumb things the franchise has done over the past few years, Eli's extension doesn't even rank.
It doesn't protect him from getting cut.
They made the same mistake the Chargers did with Rivers though and tied a team that needed a close to real tear down with a win-now QB. It was a mistake, objectively.
We all realize that Eli is in his late 30s and won’t be playing for ever. I’d like to believe that most of us Giants fans have a better appreciation for Eli and what he’s meant to this franchise than you do. He deserved the extension and the NT clause. (He also deserved an offense that matched his strengths.)
However, they will save 33M over two years in salary/bonuses.....so basically, they will net 20.6M over two seasons......
I am hoping some team makes an offer that the Giants AND Eli can't refuse....hate to see him stay here in this shit show of another rebuild....it would be good for both sides....I think Eli can still play, and with the right offensive line in front of him, can show Reese and the nay sayers, what most of BBI has been saying all along....
It's not hating on him or not appreciating him to accept that the team blew his window or that sometimes hard decisions need to be made, usually better made under cold terms some fans may not appreciate in the immediate.
Not really, a few QB's have had them including Peyton.
Everything about this season sucks more than that would. At least Eli gets something out of it.
Eli was paid incredibly handsome by the Giants and taken care off. He was part of 2 SB teams but also part of teams that missed the playoffs a ton. You cannot live off success from almost a decade ago.
Lets not forget we are NY Giants fans. Eli will be here this year, next year, and will groom the future qb in his last year before he retires or moves on. But no chance he is here past that and should not be.
I have zero issue if Eli plays for another team next year or the year after if he feels he can win. But I will always put the Giants over any player. ALways
