Not a soccer fan by any stretch, but that's disappointing for US fans, and a damn shame.
I do have a question, though. Years ago they used to account for the disparity between the rest of the world and US as a function of the lack of popularity in the sport with the youth of the country. Soccer has picked up quite a bit in youth sports - has that not had any influence in the quality of the teams they put forward at this level? Or are the premiere athletes in this country too focused on other sports?
And Pulisic is really starting to become a star. It would have been amazing to see what he could have done in the a years time during the bright lights of the Wold Cup. Inexcusable.
they will even make the WC in 2022? US Soccer is an embarrassment except for the kid, he is a joy to watch. Not a shocking result but was really looking forward to watching him next year. They need to clean house with a 10 year plan.

Your last query is the answer. If youre a HS athlete who excels at a few sports, you are going to pursue the one that can make you the most $ the fastest. And in the US that isnt soccer.

I figured, but wasn't sure. Granted, if I were a 6'3 player with 4.2 speed, I wouldn't be buying soccer cleats anytime soon - but with the barrier for entry to basketball/football being so high, I thought there'd be more spillover into soccer, especially with an international market (similar to basketball). Maybe that international market is a problem not a benefit, with all the competition that comes from the rest of the world there.
I'm assuming Arena will get the ax. Do they go with an international guy or pick somebody from the US? I thought Klinsman had some good ideas on what to do to develop the youth players. He just didn't seem to be all that good at developing the national team players.
Arena? I'm not sure if he just isn't good enough or, at this point in his life, he just wasn't that into it. In any case, this is a kick in the nuts for US soccer.
was most likely a stop-gap solution anyway, so he's gone. I have no idea who they will bring in. I'd like to see Tab Ramos have an expanded role, whether it be as coach or as a replacement for Gulati.
One answer may be with the youth development system (ODP). A friend of mine was a good player back in the late 90', and whenever this topic comes up, he always points to the fact that the ODP system is totally messed up. The best prospects don't get put onto the development teams, it's usually the rich parents in charge who are choosing their kids and their friends kids to play on these teams. The first generation immigrant kid with all the talent and skills is left off the roster and forced to only play high school ball and not receive get the recognition and experience needed to advance their skills to an international level.
This wasn't sour grapes from him, he admits he wasn't nearly talented enough to play on the ODP teams.
And become a huge international celebrity. Those are false arguments
There just isn’t a soccer culture here. Creating some leagues for kids is not the same thing as having a culture where kids walk around all day kicking balls back and forth. It has to be organic and it’s just not in the US
Other countries have youth soccer schools supported by 1st division pro teams, where kids as young as 12 are playing high level soccer all year, for hours a day, surrounded by top level coaching. We have the same with tennis here in the states, but nothing like this for soccer.

Almost nothing. We do have Bradenton. And there are other developmental opportunities. I think it's the cultural more than the opportunity which moves people into other sports. I think money (for other sports) does play a role. Also, maybe our culture says soccer needs to be played on grass and so it stays mostly a suburban thing. In general, I think it being a suburban thing might be uniquely American and a big hindrance.
We can see it in US Hockey now. USA soccer is becoming a sport for the privileged. The only way to make it is for to spend thousands of dollars to play elite travel and probably hire a family advisor. The only hope for the future is that if a kid wants to improve his game he can go to a public field and work on it, unlike hockey. Our sport currently has billionaire/millionaire parents buying teams all the way up to Tier 1 juniors so their kids can personally succeed. And like in the case of the one north NJ hockey programs, you might have to put your money in the team owners hedge fund to get a spot.It also has this bias that favors pro players offspring that get opportunity based on pedigree and not talent. From what I see and have learned over years of involvemnt in the sport I will root for the world over the US in the future. Not to mention you will see a big drop in talent. There were probably dozens of players out there that could have helped team USA soccer from the past that got shut out because of this.
Or are the premiere athletes in this country too focused on other sports?
I won't say that's the #1 reason, but it is a big part.
I.E. OBJ was an excellent youth player, but obviously the money was elsewhere.
Iceland is a country of what, 300,000 people? They just qualified out of UEFA while winning their qualifying group.
There are millions of people in America who play soccer. That the US could not qualify under rules tailor-made for them to qualify every four years is criminal.
The Giants and US Soccer - two organizations where mass firings and an entirely new direction are long overdue.
to youth who show talent and promise. The world has youth academies of various backing, some governmental, some private. The Academies should be started by the MLS teams and or US Soccer and the players who go to these academies should compete against other academies. The Academies should be hiring quality coaches and trainers to actually develop the players. Right now most US aspirants are on their own with clubs who just want to amass talent and overwhelm lesser opponents. Sort of like AAU or Travel Baseball they don't develop a single skill. Waiting till college is too late to professionally develop players. You have to start between 10 and 15. 15 would be the late bloomers or previously missed. Some of the early will play themselves out of serious consideration because they already peak.
fan but follow the USMNT a bit and what makes this so frustrating to me is that the CONCACAF qualification format is incredibly forgiving when compared to the other confederations. It's one thing to have a bad run and miss our as a European or South American team but the CONCACAF makes it really hard for a team like the US to miss out on the world cup, or at least a play-in match.
Just an incredibility awful job here from top to bottom. BLAH

Both the MLS teams and US Soccer already have academies and those academies compete against each other. There are strict quality rules as to the coaches and trainers. The benefits of that system, however, have not yet extended to the men's senior team, especially last night's heavily over-30 roster.

So having virtually no chance sounds like something left over from the days of NASL

Much more opportunity as a football or basketball player.
Also known as "the vast majority of the American populace".
that is less than population of Manhattan

In soccer you bang your head with the ball all the time. Baseball would be the safe sport
Huge disappointment
Pretty sure we needed the win, not just a tie because Panama also won.

Is 5 decades away from being even consider a good team on our side of the world fact not fiction.
Even in the past decade, we've been considered a top 15 team.
Nice try though.

I wonder if CTE and parents moving their kids away from football and into soccer will have an effect on the talent level in the coming years...

yes because an inflated ball has the same force projection as a 240 lb lineman.
