Special Teams Coordinator Tom Quinn
November 2, 2017
Q: Is the Rams special teams unit about as good as you’ve seen all year?
A: Very good group, yeah. Well coached, they’ve got very good specialists and very good specialists that can do multiple things. [Punter] Johnny Hekker’s very good throwing the ball and they’ve run fakes in the past, so it’s a good challenge.
Q: Do you think the Bye Week came at a good time for kicker Aldrick Rosas?
A: I think you just continue to work. I don’t think it helps or hurts in any way.
Q: Do you have to be on guard for trick plays this week more than usual?
A: You always do. You’re always designing everything to have everyone accounted for.
Q: How do you correct some of the things in the kicking game that didn’t go as well as you hoped in the first half of the season?
A: I think with punt coverage, doing a better job with the personnel that we have out there, getting them in the correct football position that we want them to be able to tackle. And return wise, you’re just kind of waiting to get some opportunities. Haven’t had a whole lot of opportunities with kickoff return, I think about one a game right now, so it’s hard to get any rhythm going with that.
Q: Are you satisfied with the job Ed Eagan has done filling in as returner?
A: First game, I was pleased. I think last game he pressed it too much and questionable decision. You’ve got to have a good time clock in your head with regard to hang time and when to be able to return it, when to fair catch it.
Q: Do the Rams do more unique things on special teams than most teams?
A: Well, where they’re unique is they’ve got a punter that can execute fakes. And they’ve got that on tape and they’ve been doing it the last four or five years. So, that’s always the challenge, making sure you’ve got everyone covered.
Not really true. They're definitely having a bad year this year, but the Giants have had decent ST at times, and more importantly they have regularly shown some improvement throughout the season (with a few notable exceptions) over the past few seasons.
Here are their rankings per Football Outsiders for each of the last five years.
2016 - 11th
2015 - 2nd
2014 - 15th
2013 - 28th
2012 - 10th
2011 - 15th
2010 - 30th
2009 - 26th
2008 - 11th
2007 - 20th
So there have been three years where they were among the worst in the league out of ten. 6 years they've been in the top half of the league. 4 years they were in the top 11 teams.
Not really as bad as we remember it.
