because no one on this fan website knows exactly what his role is.
Now what I find annoying on BBI is the misguided concept that he has zero credentials and just has the job because of his name. Thats a fallacy. He has a football resume.

Please, are you really that naive? His resume is paper thin and accomplishments, nil.

Quote:
Chris Mara joined the Giants as Vice President of Player Evaluation on July 29, 2003. He was promoted to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel in 2011.
This is Mara’s second tour of duty with the franchise. He joined the Giants staff prior to the 1979 season and over the next 14 years was a member of the club’s player personnel department. Mara was a scout during the franchise’s first two Super Bowl Championship seasons in 1986 and 1990.
Following his first stint with the Giants, Mara spent eight years (1994-2001) operating ProRate, Inc., an independent football scouting service contracted by as many as 15 NFL franchises. The service provided an evaluation of the free agent market in the NFL. (more at Giants.com)
I agree that he has a resume, and I've heard positive things about his evaluation skills, but you have to admit that his job title presents a bit of a conflict. If they're overhauling the personnel department, would Chris Mara still have a job with a different last name? The answer is undoubtedly no.

Why undoubtedly? Nobody can say with any kind of certainty what decisions may or may not be attributed to him, what player finds may be to his credit, or what moves that flopped were on him.
For all anyone here knows, he might be the best eye for talent they have.

Sure, and for all anyone here knows, he might have the worst eye for talent. That is the problem, his being a Mara gives even the appearance of impropriety. Sure, it's their team, and they can run it as they see fit, but when fans see the entire front office gutted, but Chris Mara is still standing, don't be surprised when they ask questions.
son of Wellington. Period. He's an owner. The fact that he's picking players is why the Giants are what they are now. We had a Giants Super Bowl era of football with Mara's picking the players. 1966-1979. Now we have a new one 2012-?
Just because he grew up into it doesn't automatically translate into his having the best talent for the job, so length of time doing it doesn't mean the same as it would had his name been Jones instead of Mara.
Wellington Mara grew up around it for much of his life yet he needed outside help in Young.
When the Mara's to place themselves in the personnel decision making seats we have to accept the fact that unless you believe that even if they tried to hire the most qualified person available for the job, they would still always be the better skilled option.
I get it though, it's their team, I can't say for certain how involved I would want to be if I grew up in that situation but that still doesn't mean it's highly unlikely they would be both lucky enough to be born into it and the most qualified individuals for the jobs they give themselves. And if they aren't them the team suffers for it to some extent.

This is my impression as well. I think if the Giants are serious about a rebuild they kick Chris upstairs or otherwise get him out of the player selection process, which has been a disaster.

Whatever his credentials, it isn't prudent to have someone in football operations who isn't as accountable as a non-family member would be for at least two reasons. First, the obvious one, he can't be fired (or at least it becomes much more problematic to do so). Secondly, by definition, he has out-sized influence beyond what a non-family member in the same position would have.
Just a horrible, horrible idea. End of story for me.

His best credential is his name, though.

Exactly. It is amazing to what lengths some on BBI will go to deny the obvious

And see who rushes to hire him. He no doubt will have other teams falling all over themselves to retain his invaluable services.

Come on. He's got major football Chops. His family owning a team as NOTHING to do with it. Haters.
