It has been said many times that BBI is a community.
Marty in Albany : 11/9/2017 6:49 pm : link
It is good to be in this community–many would say, it is a privilege. But what does our community really consist of?

Basically, it consists of words. Only words. Words that can make us think happy thoughts or angry ones–words that keep us well informed, and in touch with the rest of the world.

If the words are sometimes mistaken--made in error, that can be forgiven. Nobody is perfect. But as a community we rely on the words to be well intended and factually true, or to be a true expression of a poster’s opinion.

Words that are intentional lies have no place in a community that consists only of words and where all we have to rely on are words.

Question for Eric
JohnF : 11/9/2017 7:07 pm : link
We have options for Football Topics and Non Football Topics when we post. Why not either a) Create a new "Rumors" tag, so that those people who want to see those posts can check them out, or b) Assign a permanent sticky for "Rumors", and set up rules so that people who want to post "inside information" without a linked source (like Slade) would have to post in that section, and not on the main topic area?

A lot of the outrage here is that people can post "insider" stuff in the main Football topic area, and it's almost impossible to tell if they are trolling, or have real information that may or may not come out the way they posted it. A "Rumors" sticky would avoid that (with the help of the Mods, who could educate new asshats, and discipline those who are abusing it).

It would also make the board a bit friendlier for those "insiders" who like to share information, as there's no reason to attack someone posting in a "Rumors" sticky.

Why are you presuming "he" break any rules? Eric set up the poll to only allow a single vote from a single IP. Sure you could vote from multiple devices, but the poll didn't count multiple votes from the same device. One of the last screens on the poll allowed you to share the poll. It could easily have been shared on someone's facebook feed imploring friends to vote keep. Nothing against the rule. BBI isn't some secret outpost on the interweb.

This was my thought process earlier today:

- Cvic/Slade was about a 0.700 asshat poster a few years ago, including some really obscure stuff.

- When he started batting 0.000, his previous history provided him with cover.

- But his postings has become more frequent and spectacularly false... not even close.

- There has been a long-standing rule on BBI to not deliberately post misleading info. Hence my posts yesterday about him not being long for this site. (Latest rumor being his final shot).

- I started this poll more to show folks that support for banning slade was not as dominant as believed, but I still expected him to lose. (I couldn't believe we were at 50/50 for the bulk of the day).

- Now the result shows him staying and even though there are holes in online polling, my dilemma is whether or not to respect the result (influenced by the fact there is a weird spike in votes) or go with my original instinct.

Now I see why my cat thought the poll idea was stupid.

arcarsenal : 11/9/2017 10:26 pm : link
Personally, I voted to ban him just because it's obvious what he's doing at this point - but I honestly don't care that much where I'd be outraged if he stays. No one is going to take him seriously. He's just going to turn into the next EliteMob where every thread is a trainwreck.

It's obvious that the poll was compromised somehow so it's a double-edged sword. You probably should respect the result of it - but it's hard to do that when it was pretty clearly tampered with somehow.

I will say that he's not plastered all over the board so it's not like an obnoxious poster that is on 9 out of every 10 threads bothering people. He doesn't really bother me, it's just clear that he has no reliable connection at this point (it doesn't seem like he has any at all) so none of his threads can be taken seriously and will just continue to be what they've turned into.

There are posters who are far more annoying than Slade is.

I'd say go with your gut. The board will go on with or without him.

How come flat out bans for looooong time posters? Maybe people made honest mistakes? Is there a warning system at all?

Limited bans? They can come back in a month and then permanent? I mean who hasn't posted something stupid here when or while they were drunk? Unless they are obvious trolls - just looking for trouble ...

I think you have to ask what purpose he serves at this point.

If the only thing a guy is doing here is posting fake inside info and doing it for nothing but attention, he's not bringing anything to this place.

I don't think posters should ever get banned just because they share nuggets they hear that turns out to be false - but it's pretty clear the guy is just trolling the board at this point.

Like I said in an earlier post - he doesn't bother me enough for me to be truly affected one way or another, just not really sure if there's any point in it being a "Slade being Slade..." situation. No one takes any of his threads seriously anymore. So, every one he starts is just going to be a pile on.

nice to know that you followed up. Your first reply implied quite clearly that the First Amendment applied only when the restriction on speech or freedom of the press involved the imprisonment of the speaker. It is apparent that you now concede that this is not the case. The jurisprudence does not yet clearly specify that the control of speech in private media, particularly the now dominant electronic media, will be directly controlled by the application of first amendment principles. My post was brief and to the point, and was intended to remind voters that freedom of speech is an important principle, and that media control should always err on the side of freedom of expression. It was just a reminder to BBI voters that such freedom is fundamental and if there was no harm in what Slade had posted, voters could consider his posts as being amusing and harmless. Of course, a rationally supported ban would be quite appropriate, and if a clear rule was violated eminently justified. Obviously, subject of course to the possible heavy voting irregularity, a good number of those who voted felt that erring on the side of freedom of expression was justified. While I agree with this, I question whether BBI might profit from a stronger ban on contemptuous, ad hominem, and similarly uninformed attacks.
