This Article on Handley sounds awfully familiar

jlukes : 11/12/2017 8:27 pm
Handley believes that professional football players should motivate themselves, that coaches should be teachers rather than motivators. Taylor agrees to a point.

``We are all professionals,`` Taylor said. ``We`re grown men who get paid a lot to play the sport. Should there be motivation from the coaches at all? But I think it`s up to the head coach to get everybody in the right frame of mind. It all boils down to trust. If you trust the guy, if he shows he knows what he`s talking about, it`s OK.``

His transformation into Handley is near complete.

Handley's problems started early on the job. He had trouble deciding during the 1991 training camp whether to make Phil Simms or Jeff Hostetler the starting quarterback and there was a public outcry when he picked Hostetler.

He walked out of one news conference because he did not like a question. Later, when he was asked to define his job, he said he was a teacher, not a motivator, and said professional players should motivate themselves.

This year, his new defensive coordinator, Rod Rust, installed a read-and-react defense that antagonized veteran defensive players who enjoyed so much success in the past with an aggressive system. Players complained that there was no communication with coaches. And there were many more problems.

McAdoo isn't ready to be an NFL head coach, maybe one day, but not now. The Giants won't play for him. - ( New Window )

He was ALL about motivating his players. Some strange stuff, but he did it his way and was successful for many teams he coached.
