NFT: At last, good news - the Deadwood movie is likely happening

Since Deadwood‘s cancellation in 2006, rumors have swirled that series creator David Milch and HBO would be keen on making a follow-up to the woefully short-lived and incredibly violent western, and now, finally, it might actually happen. TV Line is reporting that sources have confirmed to them that HBO is eyeing a fall 2018 start date for production.

I've rewatched the series many times, but I'm skeptical of a movie being good at this point. Where do they pick up at? Some of the characters have really aged so they can't pick up from where they ended.
I also loved time. It's a damn shame they were forced to wrap up the whole series in like 4 episodes.
Be brief!

Three main actors I hope they get back.

Ian McShane -- Al Swearengen
Timothy Oliphant Sherriff
Robin Weigert Calamity Jane

Of those, the most essential is Swearengen. Won't be the same without him.
I gave up on that show twice after about 4 episodes.

At what point in the series do scenes without Ian McShane get good?
Olyphant's Seth Bullock was dull as dishwater, I thought

but the rest of the show was stellar.

Agree, but mostly because that was the role. Bullock was the straight laced Sheriff who dutifully marries his brothers widow. His contrast with Swearengen and even to a lesser extent Hearst was great.

I viewed him as almost Elliott Ness-like.

Olyphant is a good actor.
Bullock was the straight man

He was supposed to be a dull character. It's not as if there were a shortage of colorful characters in the series - Dan, Joanie, Trixie, Cy, Farnum, Merrick, Adams, Jane, Hearst, etc. The point of the entire series was the clash between Bullock and Swearengen and what they represented.
