Defensive End Jason Pierre-Paul
November 29, 2017
Q: How did you react to the change at quarterback personally and is it an end to an era?
A: At this point, I donít really think itís about an era. If people are looking at it that way then theyíre mistaken because Eli (Manning) is a good person, heís a good quarterback. It was a decision that was made. A lot of people would disagree with it and you see what I see. So there really isnít too much to talk about.
Q: Do you agree with the change at quarterback?
A: Honestly, itís more than just the quarterback, you know what I mean? There are a lot of things that have been happening around here and we all see it, but I donít think it has anything to do with the quarterback.
Q: Do you think that Eli should still be the starter?
A: The decision was made upstairs so I canít really talk about that, I play defense.
Q: Do you agree with the decision?
A: I just said the decision wasnít my decision. Iím just an employee. Iíve been playing with Eli for eight years now. I was honored to win the Super Bowl with him and heís a two time MVP. Check his stats, record, his whole resume. Heís been here before me and heís literally the last one standing.
Q: Do you think that heís being scapegoated?
A: I think there are a lot of issues. Right now, we got to focus on football. The goal is to win, win football games and we havenít been doing that lately and we got to approach the game that way. The decision has been made and there is nothing we can do about it.
Q: Do you feel like heís being blamed?
A: Blamed for what? Whatís he being blamed for?
Q: The fact that you guys are 2-9 and heís now getting taken out?
A: Listen, nobody knows why the decision was made. I donít even know. But at the end of the day, this is their call.
Q: Have you had any conversations with him?
A: No. Eli sits right there, actually heís right there. You can turn around, heís right there. And my locker is right here.
Q: If you were to say something to him about the change, what would you say to him?
A: Me and Eli talk every day. But mostly I say hi and he says good morning and thatís it.
Q: So coach (Ben McAdoo) hasnít explained why the decision was made?
Q: Is that surprising? Would you like to hear why?
A: Hey, the decision was made, you know? Weíre a team and we stick by the decision and we stick with Eli. Eli is our brother and all we can do is support him. Iím going to be here to support him and weíre going to have fun together.
Q: Do you think this is hard for him?
A: Iím pretty sure it is. Iím pretty sure it is. I donít know when he found out about it, but it was all a shock to us. Like I said, itís more than an era, do you know what Iím saying? He never missed a game, it was more of an era for him. Eli is a type of guy, he wants to win. He wants to win games, but unfortunately, that wasnít happening. Like I said, Eli is a great quarterback and the decision was made and we got to go out and play football.
Q: Do you think the change at quarterback is going to give this team a surge?
A: We got a lot of things to fix on this team. The players know and everybody else in this facility knows.
Q: Is the fact that he took scout team reps a slap in the face?
A: Not really, not necessarily. It was kind of crazy because Iím not used to seeing Eli as a number two personally. Still in my eyes, I donít see him as a number two or a backup quarterback. I was just rushing and I just realized I had to stay away from him still because that is our quarterback at the end of the day.
Q: It doesnít sound that youíre overly thrilled with the decision.
A: Like I said, the decision has been made. I donít know what to tell you. I donít know whatís going on, on that side of the ball. I play defense. I got to continue to do my job. Five more games left and Iím going to play my heart out for these five games.
Q: I canít really get the tone on how you feel about it.
A: I know, see Iím just mellow.
Q: How do you feel about it?
A: How do I feel about it? Iím just mellow about it.
Q: Do players feel disappointed that they couldnít do more to help?
A: Obviously a lot of players feel disappointed. Heís been our starting quarterback for eight years and Iím pretty sure heís disappointed. But at the end of the day, Iím still here to support Eli. Weíve been through a lot of things together. Iím going to be here to support him as well as Geno (Smith) because that is our brother too as well. Itís an opportunity. It could be a hit or miss, but who knows? At the end of the day, the decision was made upstairs.
