NFT: NHL News: Seattle $600+M Arena Approved

for renovation for hockey and basketball use.

not on the current slate of topics for NHL owners meeting, but I expect them to add it soon.

With 31 teams they always intended to add another team after Vegas, wasn't sure it would be this soon.

I think it's pretty close to a done deal for a Seattle hockey team in the next couple years (2020 start)

I don't hate expansion, but I think at some point the talent gets diluted, you get franchises in cities that are not passionate about the sport, and the moves hurt the sport overall while maybe benefiting the other owners.

And it's not a done deal it would be expansion, teams like Arizona, Florida, or I guess Carolina (though I haven't heard them mentioned) could relocate.

Not just the NHL

the NBA will almost certainly want a new Supersonics franchise there
There are already too many hockey teams

How much is this going to cost the taxpayers?

Teams should entice the cities, not the other way around.

they're top 10 in attendance. why would they move them?
The Pacific division already has 8 teams
NYerInMA : 12/4/2017 10:15 pm : link
So they could potentially move Arizona or Calgary to Seattle, then add Houston/KC to the Central to balance everything out. Otherwise they'd have to put the Seattle expansion team in the Central, which is sub-optimal in terms of time zones. There's also the possibility of moving a team like the Panthers to Seattle, then adding Quebec City, but that still would leave an imbalance between the Pacific and Central divisions.
No dilution if its a new

Supersonics team. They could just fill the entire roster with Shawn Kemp’s offspring.
Kings just got a brand new building

Still holding a grudge?

In all seriousness, the Kings are loved in LA. Attendance is great, the team is one of the best in the league and we’ve won two cups in the last 6 years.

Move the Rangers!! (Just kidding)

The NBA going back to Seattle is not a ? of if,
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 12/5/2017 7:32 am : link
but when.
So are the Islanders moving to Seattle or Houston?
MetsAreBack : 12/5/2017 10:25 am : link
?

I'm sure Vinny what's his face in Florida would love to move to one of these two cities, but IIRC they recently extended (for a lower rent) in Sunrise. What a waste.
by the way

which team would move East if you did expand in Seattle and relocate an East team to Houston?

Probably a silly hypothetical but no team left in the West is EDT and Chicago is much too valuable to the west to move them East. I guess Nashville.
Probably Nashville
Kyle in NY : 12/5/2017 10:34 am : link
and they'd likely do it happily. Detroit whined for years about the travel burden of being in the west. Nasvhille is probably thinking the same
Well no one whines like Detroit
MetsAreBack : 12/5/2017 10:40 am : link
no one.

And Nashville is Central time zone... Detroit made the argument about all those western starts (which equated to like an extra 5 regular season games a year, some of which were on weekends and even weekend afternoons)... oh yeah and playoff start times... which are not a problem for them now since they arent sniffing playoffs any time soon!

But yeah, i'm guessing their is more fan interest, ratings and gate receipts in playing larger eastern markets more often.
An East team is relocating to Houston?
pjcas18 : 12/5/2017 10:49 am : link
when did this happen?

my guess is before expansion they'll relocate the Coyotes to Seattle.

So it will still be 31 teams.

Its just a rumor PJ

Oh, I can definitely see some teams relocating.

Maybe they expand and add in Seattle and move the Coyotes to Houston.

Coyotes and Hurricanes are the two names I hear about relocating, and surprisingly Ottawa, but with Ottawa I hear they'd likely be the team moving to Quebec - if the sens don't get a new arena approved.

though the Stars attendance is awful, so as a dark horse maybe Dallas is a candidate.
