NFT: Apple Watches

who knows anything about Apple Watches?

I'm sure I'm a get-off-my-lawner on this one, but I see no use for the gadget at all.

My wife wants one for Christmas, so I'll get it for her, but I see no reason to get the one with data, she only wants it for the steps/calories counting etc that her phone has.

so I'm looking at a gen 3 just because it's the latest, but not the Nike or Hermes or anything else, just the basic Apple watch.

What do I need to know? anything?
damn, for

You actually don't need to carry your phone around while using it. It answers calls, texts, etc... It also is going to be able to stream music so that's a nice addition for when she is working out
It's a good question

I use mine when I am working in the yard or around the house so I am not carrying the phone around. Good if you are going to a show or an event or working out. Some like it instead of a fitbit. I wear wrist watches generally so don't use it at work but you could wear it instead of a regular watch.
I love my Apple Watch

I too thought the Apple watch was an unnecessary piece of tech. After using mine for almost a year I cannot imagine not having one. It is extremely convenient. I mainly use mine to monitor my calls/texts/emails and use it to pay at stores where mobile payment is accepted. Not really into the health stuff but I know people love it for that feature as well.

I have a series 2 model. I do not see any reason why you would need LTE service as I would never go somewhere without my phone. The blutetooth connection works well enough that I can leave my phone in my office and go to the conference room or other parts of the office without losing the connection.

Hope that helps!
new watch

have tech friends who bought the new watch
they say LTE is amazing .. some leave their phones at home when they go to a restaurant or movie - they can check email text without disruptiion

that said it has huge downside .. lousy battery life .
I have the new version

and it's nice to have if you want to be health conscious or if you want to work out without having to bring your cell phone with you. You can set up some music on your watch and even listen to music from it that way if you have bluetooth headphones. The battery life on the watch has been very good for me personally since I don't use it for very long without my phone being around. I try to limit that to runs or short trips to the gym. I don't think I've seen the watch drop below 50% yet and that's even when using it for over a day straight.

I really like the heart rate monitor on there, though. That's something you aren't really going to get from your phone. It measures your heart rate while working out, of course. But it also tracks it while you're walking or resting and it's good to see where your heart rate is over time. There's even supposed to be an early if your heart rate randomly spikes as you're resting which as you can imagine can be a life saver for some people if they heed the warning.

It's also very convenient to be able to read a text message from your watch without having to pull out your phone. Replying to a text with the watch isn't fun unless you use one of the short preset messages but it's nice being able to read a message with a glance. Is the watch a necessity? No, of course not. But it's certainly a fun, convenient tool to have and it's especially good for anyone who wants a fitness band too. I think the health aspects are the main reason to get one.

This. I just got one and it's definitely more of a toy than a necessity, but it's a good one. I have mine set to see weather, upcoming schedule, and text messages on the face (obviously in addition to normal date/time) and it does make things really convenient when you're in a meeting or driving or any situation where taking out your phone isn't ideal. Also a very big fan of the workout monitoring. That's probably the best feature so far. I don't have blue tooth headphones so I haven't really seen a huge benefit to the cell service so if that's not a big deal it might be worth it to save there. I always have my phone with me so not sure I needed that.
thanks for the replies

makes sense and is exactly why she wants it.

Even without the data plan, you can still put music on the watch so you can go for runs or whatever without the phone. Series 2 has GPS, series 1 doesn't.

I have a Series 2. It's definitely sort of a luxury item - not totally necessary. But I like having it for fitness stuff. The HRM is nice to have.

+1

I got the original Apple Watch for free through my company. At the time I thought it was a toy that I never would have paid for. Since then I've found it to be indispensable . In addition to keeping time it pings you if you have a message from any app installed on your phone. It tracks you activity, distance you've walked or run and heart rate. At a certain age, that becomes important. Also you can make and answer calls on the watch, even the non LTE watches. IMHO, the watch is particularly helpful for women, who may be carrying the phone in a purse, not within easy reach.

I can't speak for the Series 3, but the battery life on the original with is outstanding. I finish the day with between 60 and 70 percent left.

If you're going to get the Series 3, definitely get the LTE version, even if you don't plan on using that feature. You get a lot more disk space.
I have Gen 2, and I would get Gen 3.

I didn't realize that Gen 2 does not have an altimeter to track altitude. I had that with my Fitbit and liked it. Otherwise I like it, although the battery life sucks. My Fitbit would go for 4-5 days, Apple Watch is about 36 hours. It does a lot more, but the constant charging is a hassle.
