Thoughts on Jim Harbaugh?

adamg : 12/5/2017 8:19 pm
Looking at the HC prospects out there, I'm seeing Harbaugh as among the best guys who may be on the market. Is he a bad fit in anyone's estimation or could he be a good guy who can turn our leadership problem around? He seemed to have a lot of success in SF despite his short stay. I'd take playoff appearances in 3 out of 4 years...
I'm a Michigan fan and I can't believe he would leave Michigan
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/5/2017 8:23 pm : link
he hasn't achieved the level of success there he wants as his lasting impact. His wife and family love Ann Arbor. I just don't see it.

Thanks for the heads up. You don't think the lure of a franchise like the Giants would do it, eh?
The new GM will pick the new HC. You can speculate all you want but it
plato : 12/5/2017 8:25 pm : link
Doesn't matter until a new GM is in place. And that's the big and critical issue. In many ways the GM puts the stamp and character on the team, the HC carries out the field game with the team the GM gives him. It's what annoyed Parcells that George Young picked the team he had to lead and develop. The Maras accept this model, so HC guesses are for now a waste of time
I mean,...look. He was in the Pros. He had achieved great success
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/5/2017 8:26 pm : link
in a short time at San Fran. Yes, that last season things went bad and he was clashing with the GM. But what drew him to college was his alma matter, Michigan. You talk about a 'Michigan Man'? That is 100% Jim Harbaugh. Keep in mind, this roster isn't even full of his recruits yet. He hasn't even had a capable QB yet. He would be walking away from the institution that means more to him than anything else on Earth and leave unfinished business.

Anything is possible. But I just can't possibly imagine Harbaugh leaving yet. Not yet...

Plato...those who are floating Harbaugh's name are eyeing him for both GM/HC. I can't see it happening, but just saying.
I'd take him
jeff57 : 12/5/2017 8:28 pm : link
But there would have to be a GM he could work with.

Right. But still worth a call...
IMO he comes across as a runner
montanagiant : 12/5/2017 8:30 pm : link
As in runs away the minute things go bad. I just don't see him as a Giant HC in the least
It would be an outside-the-box choice for the Giants.
81_Great_Dane : 12/5/2017 8:31 pm : link
He's not the kind of personality they tend to like. He's also got that Larry Brown thing, where he doesn't seem to stay in one place very long. The Giants won't like that.

But it's a mess there. An outside-the-box choice is possible.
The Giants have no interest

In this guy. Why are names like this even suggested. Waste.

arcarsenal : 12/5/2017 8:33 pm : link
I can't see him bailing on Michigan before he really fields the team he wants there. That's one job I don't think he'll leave unfinished.

If he was willing to come here, I'd certainly be interested - I think he's a very good football coach.

I'd prefer his brother, actually - but the Ravens would be stupid to let him walk.
Giants aren't hiring a weirdo
B in ALB : 12/5/2017 8:33 pm : link
his place is in college where his personality resonates with young kids.

Mara and co aren't going from Simple Ben to Weirdo Harbaugh.

That San Francisco team back in the day had enough talent that my dingleberries could have coach them to a NFC championship game.

How do you know they have no interest in him? Can you actually provide proof of that or are you just stating opinion as fact?

It should be mentioned
LakeGeorgeGiant : 12/5/2017 8:39 pm : link
that the new GM likely won't have total control over selecting a HC. Mara will be heavily involved I'm sure.

But yes, the GM spot needs to be filled first.

A franchise like the Giants might do it, but if he and his wife are in love with the Ann Arbor life style, New York living will be just a little too much hustle and bustle; not to mention Ann Arbor is a great place to raise kids.
I will say this...Harbaugh is a players coach and he develops QBs
Bold Ruler : Mod : 12/5/2017 8:46 pm : link
The Giants need someone to nurture a roster and develop a QB who is going to be taken in the 1st round. He may be a blow hard but his skill set is perfect for where the Giants are right now. But he'd want control and the Giants are going to give him that. And...he isn't leaving Michigan IMO. Still...he's the guy I'd want.
*aren't* going to to give him that

He’ll get fired from there soon
Sammo85 : 12/5/2017 8:46 pm : link
He’s already been there three years. His recruits have been meh so far. Next season is big for him. I expect him to be fired two years from now.

I think he’s a better pro coach than college coach.
Harbaugh
lugnut : 12/5/2017 8:48 pm : link
Evidently just got the best HS QB from 2 years ago to leave whatever school he's at now to come to Mich. Along with a couple other players. He might finally have "his guys" -- can't imagine he'd leave now.

Harbaugh will never leave Ann Arbor

I can guarantee that Harbaugh

is on the list. And it's not a huge list so far. And don't bother asking me.

That said. The GM is a much more important hire for this team right now and needs to be locked in before the HC is solidified.

People who think Harbaugh will leave Michigan
RobCarpenter : 12/5/2017 10:11 pm : link
Really don’t know anything about him. He grew up in A2, lives next to his parents, just had a kid, his other kids go the same school he went to as a kid.

He loves Michigan.

I think it's kind of arrogant to think we could get him.
Rico : 12/5/2017 10:24 pm : link
He makes $9M per year at Michigan. The Giants would never pay that for a head coach.

He went to high school literally across the street from the Big House. He is at home, and he is a huge celebrity in his home town.

He is only three years in and has unfinished business.

I would be shocked if he left Michigan.
I think he’s a good coach
Ten Ton Hammer : 12/5/2017 11:48 pm : link
But before we start listing him as a potential solution, I feel like we should be concerned that he’s not necessarily delivering in his current job.

He doesn't have the personality to recruit. Too intense and completely lacking in charm, unlike, say Nick Saban, who can lay that ole southern charm on the family of big recruits.
Michigan has zero five star recruits for 2018
Vanzetti : 12/6/2017 12:07 am : link
Ohio State has 3
Clemson and Georgia 2

Still time but recruiting does not seem to be Harbaugh's strength. He is better suited for the NFL.

He is a terrific coach and I would love the Giants to get him and I think he would take the job if they made him one of the top five paid coaches in the NFL.

But like Charlie said above, it's unlikely the Maras are going to hire a lightening rod like Harbaugh.
I don't want weekly GIFs of the guy

Guys like Harbaugh and Rex Ryan will almost always give an initial bump and they'll have moderate success. But they have an act that only works when teams are winning. Once the losses pile up, their brusque attitudes and sarcastic quips get both them and the team a lot of negative attention.

Not many established teams want to intentionally bring the circus to town.
