A Case For Spags

Tark10 : 12/6/2017 6:03 pm
Would the ownership seriously consider Spags as the new Giants head coach? He knows the New York media and seems to handle the New York media rather well. He had his chance with the Rams which didn't work out. Numerous coaches failed for various reasons when given their first opportunity. I would much rather see Spags take over rather then some college coach. Too many college coaches bomb in the NFL and New York is a pressure cooker. I was very impressed with his handling of the press today. Would do you guys think?
I think he has a very good shot!

personally want no part of him as head coach. I love the guy but the Giants can’t go through all this and not completely change the team. That seems to be what we tried with Macadoo. Also the St Louis stories were pretty terrible if true. I am not as knowledgeable about coaching candidates as a lot of others so this is only my gut opinion which is worth nothing.
No maybe the second time will be the charm

Don't get the infatuaion with this guy
larryinnewhaven : 12/6/2017 6:11 pm : link
He was an awful head coach and a very inconsistent DC. Tuck Strahan and Osi covered a lot of his warts. Last year he was solid this year the defense has been underwhelming. I think we need a clean break from is whole staff.

I totally agree with him being inconsistent on defense. You gotta love him for the Super Bowl championship, but I don’t want anything to do with that.
No Spags, no Fox, no Patriot retreads
Stan in LA : 12/6/2017 6:18 pm : link
Clean house, and that means everybody and start fresh. Which is what they should have done when they let Coughlin go.
If the Giants had a decent offense the past two years the
Blue21 : 12/6/2017 6:23 pm : link
Defense would have been a lot better. Much harder for other teams to score when you keep your offense on the field and scoring more. The defense was on the field too much. That's why the D gives up what they do and leads to more defense side of the ball injuries. I have no idea whether he'll be back as HC or DC or back at all but the pressure put on this Defense is too much to overcome IMO.
The team
mdc1 : 12/6/2017 6:26 pm : link
has a unique opportunity with plenty of runway and a QB draft pick to do this right. Shame on them if they become cowards and play safe with this. The time has come to make a bet/investment in the future and that is what winners do.
Spags ( love him)

Did "Belchek" ever oversee two of the five worst defenses in NFL history? No,Belichick has always been pretty effing great at his own expertise and then perfected the rest of the skill set as well.
I can't understand how so many pine for spags
djm : 12/6/2017 7:55 pm : link
..he's done nothing of note since 2008 save for a pretty good job in 2016. The rest of the time he's been awful. I've heard the excuses and some might hold water, maybe, but they are still just excuses.

He failed miserably as HC in St. Louis and don't tell me belichick failed in Cleveland. Bill was around average in Cleveland. Spags was dreadful. Spags was dreadful in New Orleans. Ok it was bad there. He was still dreadful. He was dreadful here in 2015 and this season? What on earth did spags do right this season? He's part of the problem!!

Spags needs to go after this month. He's had plenty of chances here and elsewhere.
No
Go Terps : 12/6/2017 8:13 pm : link
This team needs new ideas everywhere, including the defensive side of the ball. I am tired of treating the linebacking position like a forgotten stepchild. I am tired of watching us get fisted by tight ends.

The road back to prominence starts with the 2018 Giants looking like a completely foreign entity.
Mara Fired Mac Before The Season Was Over...
Jim in Tampa : 12/6/2017 9:05 pm : link
So that he wouldn't have to deal with the Giants' fans collective wrath during the 3 remaining home ganes.

When you fire a coach during the season you run the "risk" that the interim HC will get a few victories and win over the team...forcing the owner to give the guy a chance at the top job.

It's how you end up with John McVay as your HC.

I appreciate what Spags did in 2007, but I don't want him as the next Giants' HC.
.
arcarsenal : 12/6/2017 9:10 pm : link
The entire point of what's going on right now is to wipe the slate clean and start over. Hiring Spagnuolo to be the HC would be exactly the type of perpetuated mistake that we should be trying to get away from.

I like the guy a lot, I really do. But his defense was disappointing this year and his resume since he left here the first time isn't pretty.

I sincerely wish him all the best going forward. Just not here.
No way
hassan : 12/6/2017 10:07 pm : link
Should he be consdered. His answer on manning starting sounded worse than any mcadoo bumble.

He's not very good hc material
Only way Spags has a shot

Is if this team goes 4-0
I think there is a good chance the players will rally around Eli and
wgenesis123 : 12/7/2017 4:37 am : link
Spags in the remaining games. Will there be enough talent on the field to translate to wins? We shall see, Spags could end up looking very good to Mara and that will trump all the opinions of BBI.
I'm glad Spags
Allen in CNJ : 12/7/2017 4:48 am : link
got the shot to coach the team the last 4 games, he deserves it for that he has done for this organization.

But moving forward, we have to go in a different direction. It is well known that he made lots of organizational errors (like he was a "mess") in St. Louis and we don't want these things rearing their ugly heads.

So Coughlin goes
13ODB : 12/7/2017 5:48 am : link
In 2015 and promote McAdoo and keep coaches from coughlins staff. Then two years later fire McAdoo and hire spags and continue to keep coaches from both staffs already let go? Sorry no thanks spags defense has been terrible 2 of 3 seasons he needs to go to. Move on already

this year's another great example. the Pats defense started terrible and (I think) is now the NFL's #1 scoring defense. Lil Bill knows what he's doing.

I don't want Spags as HC.
Spags is a likeable guy and his accent is a perfect fit
Brown Recluse : 12/7/2017 6:28 am : link
for this team. He just hasnt had a very consistent record of success as a coach. I would hope he’s a long shot.
fuck no. for all the reasons that have been mentioned here already.
Victor in CT : 12/7/2017 8:48 am : link
The "new Belchek"? Really? Was Belichick 57 and a flop at 2 othe spots as DC and 2ndary coach. Fucking make it stop.
and if he does get it, there is the proof that they have no clue,
Victor in CT : 12/7/2017 8:50 am : link
there will be no change in how the team is run. It will be John Mara under cover of a weak GM making half-assed moves.
Please No!

Just, No!
i've sort of changed my take
djm : 12/7/2017 10:24 am : link
maybe and only maybe if this team does a 180, maybe it's worth considering Spags. Sometimes you just never know if a guy like Spags can turn things around and sort of rectify the mistakes made earlier on.

I am not saying i'd give Spags the job even if the Giants go 4-0 or 3-1 but you'd have to consider it.

Who the hell knows....his track record lately doesn't inspire me but maybe the guy has figured things out.
I just don't like
djm : 12/7/2017 10:25 am : link
that the defense quit at times this season when the season was still salvageable. Quitting at any point is awful...and that defense quit.
The defense quit this year because.....
Tark10 : 12/7/2017 10:58 am : link
The offense didn't exist. The Viking defense quit toward the end of last season for the same reason. If the offense didn't suffer so many injuries and become so inept, the defense would have been far more effective.

I get that but this is just another excuse or reason why Spags has failed lately. Some defenses never quit or carry teams to victory shit has gone south on the other end. Think back to 1997 NYG. That offense sucked all year but the D played lights out. The 2016 giants weren't much different. To see this year's D completely fold when the unit was healthy is disturbing. No matter how anyone slices it this is a mark against Spags. It sure as hell isn't a positive.

Is he the waterboy that the Giants slighted 40 years ago? The one Sean was avenging in that ass kicking the Rams handed us?
I think a new GM should hire his own HC,
Doomster : 12/7/2017 12:52 pm : link
and that HC should be free to hire his own coordinators....Just don't see Spags as HC material.....

Maybe the new HC likes what Spags has done....maybe he doesn't....Spags has escaped everything that has gone wrong with this defense for some reason....

HC most likely will bring in his own guy, unless what there is to pick from is no better than Spags....then Spags could be back as DC....

But if I am a betting man, I think we see a whole new regime...

This is crap. There were several instances early in games, early in the season when the defense failed to get off the field when they had the chance to on third down and were just as culpable in their own fatigue as the offense was. The defense has been a disappointment on their own merit; the incompetence of the offense only amplified that.

arcarsenal : 12/7/2017 4:17 pm : link
Yep. Look no further than Week 1.

Several big 3rd downs where they let Dallas extend drives and maintain FP. Couldn't get off the field when they needed to on a night where our offense desperately needed to get out of their own end of the field.

The defense was a disappointment from Day 1.

Exactly. The 18 play 90 yard yard drive in the 2nd qtr against Philly an egregiuos example
