When Dave Gettleman returned to Bank of America Stadium on Monday following his annual summer vacation to Cape Cod, he had a lot on his mind. At the end of a vacation and with training camp a little more than a week away, there was much to do. The team had begun contract talks with guard Trai Turner and linebacker Thomas Davis and had a decision to make on left tackle Michael Oher. Gettleman greeted staffers and discussed training-camp issues on Monday morning, ahead of a meeting that had been scheduled with owner Jerry Richardson. His future with the franchise was not among the Gettleman’s worries, according to sources. It should have been. In a stunning and unprecedented development, Richardson fired Gettleman during that meeting, ending Gettleman’s four-year tenure as GM and beginning one of the most eventful weeks in team history. |

In interviews with more than a dozen team and league sources, the Observer learned that Gettleman’s brusque management style – which had made him unpopular with some Carolina players from his earliest days as GM – had begun to wear thin throughout the organization. ... Smith’s situation was handled awkwardly from the start, with Gettleman’s cryptic response to a question about Smith’s future at the 2014 scouting combine, saying Smith’s future with the team was part of the “evaluation process.” The mercurial Smith was furious a few weeks later when he said he learned about his release on sports talk radio. “He doesn’t even have the cojones to tell us to our face (about the release),” Smith later told Charlotte radio station WFNZ. “We have to hear it from someone else. Then he calls and says it wasn’t personal. “If the first thing that comes out is, ‘Well, it wasn’t personal,’ then guess what? It was personal.” After Gettleman was fired Monday, Smith captioned a photo of the wide receiver laughing on his Twitter account: “It’s Okay! Dave I know you feel. ...” Williams called Gettleman a “snake” via Twitter as well on Monday. ... Beason said during an interview with WFNZ this week that Gettleman accused him of faking his knee injury following microfracture surgery... |

Gettleman’s future is unclear. At 66, it’s unlikely he’ll get another GM job in the NFL, but he would be well qualified for a scouting or consultant role. |
Well regarded by the Giants....he's not afraid to call players out....neither was reese.
I like the idea of bringing him in to groom Abrams for a few years. This GM that they hired is about succession for the future and much improved draft success. That's what Gettleman would bring to the table....and he knows the Maras and how the Giants operate.
If he were GM I doubt that JPP would be on the team today, at least not anywhere near his current contract value.
When Jerry richardson told him to stop looking at things like that, Gettleman told him it was his job to look at all options.
Because those two guys were the owners favorite players, he fired Gettleman.
I'd rather have a guy who investigates all options, but what confuses me are people who read the articles and come to the conclusion Gettleman somehow was poor at his job which is why he was fired.
I keep seeing this reasoning about Gentleman. Makes no sense.
Some of us remember Billy Martin; his forte was turnaround situations (which he did well several times). Eventually his style wears thin.
At his age, Gettleman may be the answer for the next 1/2 decade or so, and he is not the field manager. He may be able to set the organization tone for players such as OBJ or Eli Apple.

You may be right. He may be a rental. He likely gives owners a respected comfort zone....the talent for finding talent but a gruff that would tell them to there face NO . At the moment he may be the talent guy and Abram's the Operations guy while grooming. At the moment lots of FO chaos there..KA is the smooth over the chaos guy but DG there to right the ship.

Fat man, would you be comfortable with Gettleman?

Both choices suck. However, given the choice I want the guy who has an eye for talent and is not going to waste our top draft picks like we have experienced with Reese.
And that is just one story ... apparently he burned bridges most of the people he dealt with...
one agent says while Gettleman was a good talent evaluator, all those years as a scout never provided him with the interpersonal skills he needed to be a GM
McAdoo is a phonier Eric Mangini. But at least Mangini came from a 3 time SB winner working for Bill Belichick before the Jets job. It's amazing how last year went to his head. The new slick hairdo, much more pompous demeanor should have been warnign signs.

I'm not comparing their titles... I'm comparing their personalities and lack of empathy ... I'm comparing HOW McAdoo handled Manning ... without talking to him privately ... and how Gettleman handled Smith (who to the Panthers was the same as Manning)

that difficult to understand why he was fired - he had the gall to look at restructuring or trading/releasing Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen.

And at the end of the day...if he's hired, he may decide to get rid of Marc Ross and hire his own guy to run the draft and the college scouting department.
Stop comparing anything to McAdoo. It shows a lack of awareness. McAdoo was so bad he literally destroyed a franchise's standing in the span of 3 months. The guy made HAndley look ok.
Should have kept Coughlin and went after it one more time with a real roster. Coughlin didn't coach a legit team since 2012. He got more out of the 2015 Giants than McAdoo could have dreamed of. Whatever...what's done is done.
Apparently Spags learned well from him, punting on 4th and 3 from the Dallas 36.
This is why Gettleman hire means nothing will change. Ross and his team will still scout awful players and claim they built the best team. We need an entirely new front office on the personnel side

If he had the same record and no prior history with the Giants, I'd be interested but have concerns about his age.
But no. I don't want anyone with a recent tie to this team. We need new thinking. Gettleman would keep the same sorry scouts and maybe even Ross in place - and that's not even considering Chris Mara.
But here's a little secret - Carolina actually was comfortable with Gettleman. Richardson didn't mind him getting rid of Smith, Williams or Norman and actually used Gettleman's "New York style" to buffer any responsibility he held.
Where Gettleman sealed his demise was trying to look at options on how to handle Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen going forward - and he wasn't even suggesting getting rid of either - he laid out the options of restructuring, trading, releasing or keeping them as is and the two players complained and Richardson fired Gettleman.
I want a guy who isn't afraid to look at things objectively, even when it comes to vets who are nearing the end or costing too much
You're talking about a guy who was fired because he was making tough decisions.
Now people think he's just a mouthpiece for ownership??
Jesus christ.

Maybe it's just me, but I think Richardson is the problem here, not Gettleman. That reeks of "Art Modell, all the players are my pals" style of ownership that leads to failure
Gettleman cons: can be an a-hole/not strong diplomacy skills, ties to Giants organization/status quo when a full cultural refresh is needed
He wouldn't be my first choice, but the guy seems to know what he's doing.

how do you feel about the view that a new 65+ GM may not take as long of a view into the future as may be in the best interest of the org?
Frankly, most football guys are in it for the thrill of football, not looking to shirk off things to hit retirement. Most of these guys could've retired years ago if they wanted.
Unless age causes a decline in faculties, it really shouldn't be that big of an issue. But actually, I'd prefer more of a role where Gettleman tutors Abrahms rather than one where Gettleman in the answer. And I'd be fine going outside the organization too.
I just don't understand the posts that say Gettleman is a puppet or staying in house is safe or that going outside is a decidedly better option.
My biggest thing is that he isn’t a guy that I’d rush to hire this week before some other currently employed candidates are able to be interviewed. To me, that would point to a fundamental weakness in the process.
I get your point about “puppet”, “not really a change”, “LOLMARA”, etc.
Like some have been saying,it's going to be difficult to find everyones dream tandem.

I just knew once they called the Accorsi bat-phone, and had that jerk off back in the mix, the box would cleaned-up, polished and ready for re-entry.
You can just hear the happiness at Jints Central when they announce Gettleman - "Hip hip hooray! Everyone pull up your socks and jump back into the box!"
This is going to be a disaster...
That's exactly what I've been thinking.

People really gotta stop with the Belichek talk, that ship has sailed a long time ago.

You do have a point. I feel like ownership is not doing their due diligence by immediately jumping into bed with Accorsi. It feels like a panicked decision again.
The way some folks go on, those recent Super Bowl wins must have materialized out of pixie dust, because clearly no management person associated with the Giants during that span deserves any credit, or has any credibility being involved in this hire.
He has a philosophy that is inline with the way football needs to be played in NY (strong lines, running game).
If it is not Gettleman than the person who comes in should have a track record of excellence. Not just a guy who built a good team. There have been a ton of good teams, who have not been able to sustain a level of excellence... see(2010-2013 49ers, 2008-2010 Bears, 2012 Arizona Cardinals).
Apparently Spags learned well from him, punting on 4th and 3 from the Dallas 36.
Coughlin didn't hire mcadoo. Mara did. And those shitty teams from 2013-2015 were devoid of talent and that's being kind. Coughlin wasn't perfect but he was the best head coach this team had since parcells and by a wide margin. They fucked up when they fired Coughlin but worse they hired a loser to replace him. I can see moving on but for mcadoo? Garbage stupid ass move by Mara. They fired Coughlin because he was getting older. Stupid.
If Coughlin stayed Reese is still employed by nyg and they don't crash and burn this season. I firmly believe that.
