12/22 Bowl Games-NFL Draft Prospects to Watch-QB Josh Allen

Sy'56 : 12/22/2017 10:51 am
OHIO

#32 LB Quentin Polling – 6’0/235

Fifth year senior. Four year starter that will go down as one of the most productive defensive players in school history. Impressive versatility. Does a lot of damage as a blitzer, inside and out. Locates the ball and is a sure tackler. Very good footwork and feel in coverage. Not sure he has enough quickness/speed for the NFL. He is smart, but doesn’t react the way I would want a sub par athlete to. Definitely draftable backup/special teamer type that can develop in to starter quality.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN

#83 TE Tyler Conklin- 6’4/240

Fourth year senior, 2 year starter. Two straight years of being the number 3 pass catcher on this team, despite missing 5 games in 2017. Will be at the Senior Bowl. Fun player to watch, attacks the ball, plays aggressive. Consistent threat in the pass game, inconsistent as a blocker. Has an awkward body type and not sure he will hold up in NFL trenches. He plays with the desire though. Late rounder.

#45 DE Joe Ostman – 6’3/259

Fifth year senior. Was also a big time wrestler in high school. Three year starter that missed most of 2015. Will play in the Shrine Game. Technique-savvy player with really strong hands, outstanding use of leverage and power. He won’t beat anyone movement wise, but he can be dangerous in traffic. Just a hard guy to lock up. Late rounder.

#14 S Josh Cox – 5’11/197

Fifth year senior. Former cornerback that made the move to safety in 2017 and led the conference with 6 INTs. Smart player, gets to the ball and will finish hard. Makes things happen all over the field. Size is an issue unless he grades out athletically better than I think he will.

Other Notables:

#7 QB Shane Morris – 6’2/213
#74 OT Derek Edwards – 6’5/300
#7 CB Amari Coleman – 5’10/180

WYOMING

#17 QB Josh Allen – 6’5/233

This is THE reason to watch this game. One of I would say 4 possibilities at this point for the NYG pick at #2 among the QBs. As I write this, he is still questionable for the game because of an injury to his throwing shoulder sustained on 11/11. Doesn’t appear to be too serious though. Allen has the strongest arm and body combination in the class. He can put as much velocity and distance on it as anyone, and he has the frame that will take several hits and get back up. He plays pretty tough. The glaring issue here is, however, the inaccuracy. He completed 56% of his passes two years in a row. For college football, that is not good especially coming from the MWC. He didn’t have a ton of help this past season, but he sure did in 2016. What I also don’t like here, as the pressure mounted for him against good teams, he really went backwards. The combination of @Iowa, vs Oregon, @Boise State, vs Colorado State this year…1 touchdown and 5 INTs. He doesn’t really know where the ball is going sometimes and he gets very flustered/frustrated when things aren’t going his way. Is a kid from Wyoming that can’t seem to handle pressure the kind of guy we want in NY? As good as his talent may be, I’m not sure that is the gamble I want to take.

#5 CB Rico Gafford – 5’11/195

Fourth year senior, two year spent in junior college. 6 INTs over the past two years. He will be playing at the NFLPA Bowl and might be the best CB there. He is a smart player that can turn and run with anyone. I want to see him challenged against more speed than what he saw in the MWC, but he did a really nice job against Oregon, looked the part against some speed guys there.

Other Notables:

#59 OT Ryan Cummings - 6’5/317
#2 S Rico Priester – 5’9/180

Josh Allen. His accuracy is horrendous. It's not gonna get better against better DBs and pass rushers. His numbers aren't good playing in a shitty conference and was embarrassed by solid college teams. No clue how he's even in the conversation for a 1st round pick let alone top 5.

To me it's either Rosen, Darnold or Mayfield.
They once took a kid from a small town in Kentucky

Who didn't work out too badly.

Allen would be a pick if they intended to keep Manning for two more years and they traded down. He has a great arm, size and mobility. You can see why the scouts were wild about him. But he needs time.

And that kid was tough as nails and handled pressure very well despite being under constant pressure on and off the field for most of his career.

just curious I know you've said you don't have time to cover everyone. I'm wondering if that's the reason you didn't include any UAB players, or is it because UAB has no prospects this year?

Thanks
Josh Allen

From what I’ve seen of him he reminds me of Flacco. Big guy, athletic, strong ass arm. The inaccuracy and comp percentages really bother me. I don’t think he’s top 10 worthy. Top 15 is even stretching it. After that Manning camp he had everyone talking but since he put together a very underwhelming season.

What they did 30+ years ago shouldn't have any effect on what they do now. Simms worked out. That's great. Allen has shown many signs that he's not a good football player. Simply a big body with a huge arm. Those players don't typically work out. The NFL was also much different in the 1970s-1980s. If Simms played now he'd be considered a bust. Only completed 55% of his passes with 199 TDs and 157 INTs.

The one game i watched of his the receivers where dropping balls left and right, balls they had two hands on.

Would be interesting to match up that 56% rate with the drop rate.

He played when you still could hit receivers beyond 5 yards as long as the ball wasn't in the air. Like to see some of today's QBs play with those rules.

+1.
Given that writeup, makes you wonder how he would be considered #3/4 QB. You need a change in your persona to put frustration on the back burner and get your head straight for the next play; possession if you throw a pick/ pick-6. And hard to change at 23. NY is loaded with frustration and pressure. He'd do OK in a 2nd level market, like Miami or Az.
Polling looks interesting.
old man : 12/22/2017 1:37 pm : link
Has heart, could be designated blitzer.
Sounds like he might be OK in a 3-4 as ILB if his speed is not NFL level.

...for a 21-year old athlete. Is he gonna have a weight problem down the road when his metabolism slows (a la JaMarcus Russell)?

True...to an extent. But those balls are right on the money.

he thinks Allen will go number one overall, was a QB himself. And played at UCLA.

some suggest he didn't have a lot of weapons...but you gotta think he will test the best in the combine. He has great measurables, strongest arm, great mobility.

I guess the questions are his competition and accuracy...but he looks pretty accurate.

My point is someone will fall in love with him because if you built a QB he would be pretty close to how you would build em

There's been more times where his accuracy is a problem than vice versa.
I'll say

Dankbeerman : 12/22/2017 7:20 pm : link
He moves better then expected but the thing I like is how much he is into the game and having fun and competing. He is someone I would like to route for and I think a guy whos teamates would like to play for.
Carson Wentz also didn’t play against the greatest competition

I have now seen the big 4 college QB's play this season and I would rate Josh Rosen as number 1.

I've heard analysts who would in no way compare him to Wentz. Really a stretch.
His competition?

He played against better competition than Wentz and Garoppolo.

a close game...maybe trailing...under pressure..to see first hand Sy's comment......'very flustered/frustrated'...and how he then responds.
Overtly he looked good but then again after the first quarter lead not a whole lot happened...unlike the earlier game.
is Conklin
