Hope Eli pulls it together and is good to go next year
I agree. It is ultimately going to up to Eli to distance himself from his own mother though. Not sure if he will be able to do that. I hope for his sake, that he does and gets some help. Its actually a pretty sad situation he's in.
sounds like his life has been out of control since he cut off his step dad who was a strong and positive influence in his life. maybe there is hope of a reconciliation. apple showed he had talent in his rookie year. this past year was a disaster but clearly his head was not in the game, and this is not a game you can play in if you have off field distractions that you can't or won't control.
I would do everything possible at this time to redeem myself on and off the field. He better put the effort in to grow up and mature as a player. And tell his mom to stfu
right thing to do. Give both these guys a clean slate but with Â
I mean his mental approach to being a pro, playing nice with others, getting his head turned around on deep passes, bringing full effort chasing plays and tackling, etc.
Any deviations reflects on his person, poorly especially after the 2017 campaign.
1. Take a hard line with Eli Apple. This will leave the Giants with 1 option. Releasing him. Nobody is trading for him and he will push further away and completely splinter the relationship.
2. Publicly say this. Now we aren't in a position where we have to try and trade him(and get a 7th rounder) and there's a chance he can come back and contribute.
But Gettleman isn't the one that is going to have to really deal with Apple on the day-to-day. It's the new coaching staff and his teammates. For Apple, he must be earn the respect back of his teammates and earn the confidence of the new coaching staff, every day.
I hope he does that and takes advantage of this new start.
this is the only way to play it.. They know they have a short leash.. if they can fix things then they'll stay otherwise they are gone.. and he used Hart as an example..
So far Gettleman gets an A+ from me as far as ho he has handled everything..
So, if he's on a short leash, but doesn't fuck up until during the regular season, they're going to cut him then, and have a huge hole on the roster during the season that they won't be able to fill? Stupid.
Just cut him this offseason so you can then address the position in the offseason. Unless, they're not expecting to win next season and it doesn't matter. If they're going to cut him, just get it over with.
just show me the baby.
This is that philosophy in action.
Apple has a clean slate with Gettleman- but the slate isnt Gettleman's to give. If Apple continues to suck, DG will bench him. And he doesnt have to make amends with DG- DG wasnt around this year. It's his teammates and fans he has to win back. If he continues to be an asshole, he won't last long.
All that matters is tomorrow.
but part of me thinks this may be a sign that Wilks is the frontrunner for the HC job. Former DB coach (and AHC), then DC, someone with whom DG has strong familiarity - that would be the leadership personality that could give DG full confidence to wipe the slate clean with Apple and build up his maturity.
Like I said, probably reading too much into this, just thought I'd share my view.

Commanding the locker room is important, but DG isn't picking his coach just to help with the Apple situation.
Apple is going to make this work on his own, with the help of whoever is the HC. Apple has to want to be an NFL player, not just a guy playing NFL football (as DG was quoted).
Adam Jones is still in the NFL ten years after being written off. Â
He never became a choirboy, and he still gets fined or suspended occasionally. If PacMan can salvage a career, Eli Apple certainly can. Don't know whether it can happen here, but Gettleman is right to give it a shot.
I'd hardly call it "handled". They had a conversation in the offseason. Its easy to say the right things in a meeting and I'm sure EA will need a lot more than one convo with the GM to right his ship.

yeah but his problems were never on the field and in the locker room like Eli's
hear “substance abuse” attached to Eli, there is no need to move him. Guys like Greinke & Votto in MLB need regular psychiatric aftercare . It did wonders for Brandon Marshall. Apple needs counseling and therapy but the Giants need new defensive coaches . Spagnuolo coughed up the bit in ‘17. Whatever the hell went on, it’s time to term it and begin anew .
Jones has played with Dallas and Cincinnati- two franchises that have an exceptional tolerance for players with issues, violence and general shenanigans.
His career with them is no proof of rehabilitation.
Remember what Gettlemen said "You don't give up on talent" Â
And I sure he means first round talent especially. Plus you don't want to lessen his trade value if the right deal comes along. My guess is he'll keep a close eye on it because he also mention the locker room atmosophere and comraderie so it'll be a short leash.

I’m not saying it’s over and done with. What I’m saying is the foundation was laid for the remainder of Apples career as a Giant which is something that likely didn’t happen his past season when things started going bad. We have someone in charge who isn’t going to put up with crap like this, it’s refreshing.

I think you are making a ton of assumptions about what happened in the past and what will happen in the future.
And how does giving someone a clean slate equate to not putting up with crap like this? If anything its the exact opposite. Apple got a free pass for past behavior.

Woudn't it be the coaches job to deal with this? What GM on what team would've gotten involved?
What do you base that Flowers comment on? Raanan's bullshit?
Which part of Raanan's article do you think is bullshit?
I don't give a shit about the secret santa incident by itself, but the rest of that article suggested it was a pattern -- that neither guy would participate in OL activities, the OL camaraderie that all OLs seem to thinks build's OL chemistry/cohesion, or even take tips from the veteran OLs -- sounds pretty damning.
I understand Raanan had his run-in with Flowers, and could well be banging the drum to get him gone, but I presume there he'd have way too much to lose to be outright fabricating that story out of thin air.
And IF it's true, it is the EXACT OPPOSITE of what Gettleman SAID he wanted for the locker room culture. Same with Apple.

Gettelman wasn't employed by the Giants when this all happened. He's sticking with Apple and Flowers because of their draft status and upside. Keeping Apple isn't really giving him a free pass - its giving him 1 more chance under his watch.
The entire point I tried making which is apparently alluding some is that our new GM sounds like he's having the right discussions with the right attitude and putting it on the players to change.
1. Sorry for all the personal trouble you have faced this year. Are you all right? How can we help?
2. I have seen some good things from you on the field and think you can have a good career in the NFL and make some money for your family.
3. Do you want to play football in the NFL?
4. What happened in 2017 cannot and will not continue.
5. We want you to be a NYG and will start fresh from this point on with the organization.
6. This is what we expect from you. (List: Work hard, stay out of trouble, show respect for coaches and teammates, be a good teammate, be a pro, be resilient)
7. You are not entitled to special favors and will need to earn what you get including your teammates respect.
8. There will be some difficult times ahead. We will help, but it is up to you.
9. People have short memories. You CAN turn this around.
1) Keep your mother away from anything to do with this team
2) Do whatever you have to do in off season to get head right
3)Get on Landon Collins good side
4) 2 strikes- no more bullshit

Yup, expect the same for Flowers.
+1.
DG will put it on the HC to daddy him first.
He played very well during his rookie season.
Any deviations reflects on his person, poorly especially after the 2017 campaign.
2. Publicly say this. Now we aren't in a position where we have to try and trade him(and get a 7th rounder) and there's a chance he can come back and contribute.
IMO, Apple and Flowers SHOULD have clean slates with the new regime. And short leashes.
I hope he does that and takes advantage of this new start.

There is little to no cap savings from cutting him, even with the voided future guaranteed salary
Presumably his mother won't have brain surgery next season and if he can accepts new advisors he might get his head screwed back on straight.
Apple makes the Giants a better team if the personal bullshit is set aside.
Rinse and repeat until he grows up.
If that doesn’t work, bring in LT to break his nose (though it didn’t seem to help Derek Brown).
This is that philosophy in action.
