Should the Giants move Collins to LB?

nyjuggernaut2 : 1/6/2018 10:00 pm
We all are aware how bad our LB corp is. Watching the Rams/Falcons game and seeing the plays Dion Jones and Mark Barron are making (Barron used to play safety and Jones is the same size as Collins) shows me how badly we need impact LBs.

Collins is clearly a better player when he plays closer to the LOS. We have Andrew Adams who can play SS, and who I felt for the last few games was one of our most consistent defensive players. Wouldn't mind seeing the Giants use Collins as more of a hybrid LB, the way Deion Grant was used back in 2010.
Creating a weakness at one position
Ten Ton Hammer : 1/6/2018 10:02 pm : link
to be able to say you improved another position does what?

He also doesn't want to play LB. They threatened to make him one after his rookie season and rather than do it, he worked to lose weight.

I'd rather put a better FS next to him. He was one of the best safeties in the league last year, I don't see much point in moving him. Barron was never on 2016 Collins level as a safety.
He's more valuable as a Safety
GFAN52 : 1/6/2018 10:02 pm : link
Moving him would weaken the secondary.
No
blueblood : 1/6/2018 10:03 pm : link
they should just go get someone to play LB. Why take an all pro safety and try to turn him into something he doesnt play.. makes no sense to do so
If we wanna compete for next years Super Bowl
DennyInDenville : 1/6/2018 10:06 pm : link
Imo Mika Fitzpatrick , Collins, DRC and Jackrabbit in the secondary is the way Togo.. get a stud mike for the middle and teams won't score 10 points on us
No, why mess with a good thing?
732NYG : 1/6/2018 10:06 pm : link
Hopefully with DG, we'll finally start investing more into the LB position.
Personally I felt Collins struggled quite a bit in coverage this year.
nyjuggernaut2 : 1/6/2018 10:07 pm : link
And was clearly more dominant when he played in the box. However, I guess to move him Giants would probably have to switch to a 3-4, which I don't see happening.
It is not that he is best in the bkx
nygiants16 : 1/6/2018 10:08 pm : link
It is that he is at his best when he is roaming around, for whatever reason he played a lot more centerfield this year, did not see the aggressiveness we saw in 2016 when he was making plays behind the line...
Why have an all-around caliber player change positions?
Vin_Cuccs : 1/6/2018 10:09 pm : link
Don't weaken one position in an attempt to strengthen another.
Mark Barron moved because he flopped at safety

Very different situation.

he did not come close to being the player he was in 2016......there were a lot of missed tackles, and he had all kinds of problems in coverage....

If he wants to be an all pro, he has to be a lot more consistent......

I agree that he should stay at SS, and hopefully we find a FS to pair him with........

Pretty sure spags had no choice with the poor cornerback play. A healthy Jenkins and DRC, maybe bringing Cockrell back he should be able to roam free more often

Do you think his coverage problems may have come from the high ankle sprain he played on for 10 weeks?
I understand the question,
81_Great_Dane : 1/6/2018 10:56 pm : link
but no, I don't think so.
Most people still aren't aware that he was playing hurt.

I really don't know how it actually affected his play....think any player goes out there and plays without an injury? It's the nature of the beast....everyone thought it was the ankle that was the reason for Flowers' play his rookie year...IT WASN'T....

Collins did not look like Collins right out of the gate....
Of course they should
RetroJint : 1/6/2018 11:26 pm : link
What was said of Pete Shaw can also be said of Collins : hits like a line breaker. Runs like a linebacker . In deep coverage or Man (remember Harvard at Tampa?) , he is so bad that it’s comical . Moving him from S can do wonders for next year’s three-deep and quarters . He is the new Roy Williams, who, of course, went to the Pro Bowl frequently .

The difference is, we actually saw Collins play at an all-pro level in 2016, where as we were only guessing/hoping that the ankle sprain is what affected Flowers' play during his rookie year. And yes, players are all dealing with something, but a high ankle sprain is different, especially for a position like safety. I'm with arc, put a solid FS to be more of the center fielder and a healthier LC will go back to being the difference maker that he was in '16.
The idea to move Collins to LB is just ridiculous...
EricJ : 1/6/2018 11:35 pm : link
the guy has played safety his entire life and that is how he is wired. You would be taking a guy who is one of the top safeties in the league and then turn him into a below average LB... smart.

The Giants have fucked around with enough players thinking they can turn a guy into something he isn't.... like a left tackle.
Williams..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/6/2018 11:39 pm : link
wasn't a LB. He was a safety, though.

Question
Dragon : 1/7/2018 1:26 am : link
What is Collins strength is it not playing close to the line of scrimmage, for sure it’s not and will never be coverage in the NFL.
It is all scheme-dependent
Sy'56 : 1/7/2018 6:44 am : link
Collins is not a pure S that absolutely needs to be playing on the back end. However keeping him at S does allow him to roam more, move around more, which is where he is at his best.

He can play a Deone Buchanan type role in that kind of scheme, yes.

More important though, is the other S next to him. I think there needs to be a more rangy, better tackling safety than what NYG has in Thompson.

Middle Linebacker

Weakside Linebacker

Why would you move the best SS in the NFL out of position?
No
Carson53 : 1/7/2018 9:46 am : link
but I would move DRC to free safety in the last year of
his deal. I an not exactly sold on Thompson back there,
seems to lack speed and range. I guess that's why he went
in the third round? He doesn't make any plays back there.

Not at all.
I get the thinking
Peppers : 1/7/2018 10:50 am : link
But I think the answer is no. Maybe move him down occasionally in nickel. But he’s a lot like a queen on a chess board at safety. We can do so much with him there.
Well
idiotsavant : 1/7/2018 12:04 pm : link
I've been pushing the 5-0-6:

3 legit DTs (a NT and a big DT)
2 real DEs
3 safeties
3 corners

So, in this set up,whereas you want the DL to provide both run stops and pressures, having a S that has some lb ability is not a bad thing.

This is a very multiple set.

Don't assume runs up the middle on those 3 DTS.
