Giglio Red flags? Scouts worried about potential Giants pick Josh Rosen

Volin Boston Globe: Sunday Football Notes:
“Josh McDaniels interviewed with three teams on Thursday and Friday, and none of them seems like a slam dunk. All three teams have a GM, so McDaniels would have to be comfortable working with someone new.
With the Colts job, the big question mark is Andrew Luck’s shoulder injury and whether he can regain his arm strength. With the Giants job, McDaniels would either be forced to take on a declining Eli Manning next season, or be the one who has to get rid of a franchise player (and McDaniels certainly has some scars for how he got rid of Jay Cutler and other players from his time in Denver). With the Bears, McDaniels would have to be enamored with Mitchell Trubisky, and would have to ignore three decades’ worth of failure by Bears quarterbacks.
So it wouldn’t be surprising if McDaniels didn’t take any of those offers. People around the league are waiting to see if the Titans job comes open, and that could be attractive to McDaniels given his relationship with GM Jon Robinson. Still, a league source close to McDaniels predicted that he will take a job this time, and agreed with me that the Colts job is the best fit, especially if Luck’s shoulder is OK, and especially since McDaniels already knows and likes the backup there in Jacoby Brissett.”

“Khan’s decision to hire Coughlin and the organization’s decision to pick up Bortles’ 2018 contract option ($19 million guaranteed only for injury) were two of his biggest calls this year.
“Tom has been a very successful coach – this is a different stage for him,” Khan said. “Could he embrace it? It turned out better than certainly I thought it would and really the credit is to him. He never asked for [final say of] the 53-man roster – that was my idea. I told Tom, ‘Maybe it’s not good for Dave’s ego, but there has to be somebody in charge and it needs to be you.’
“What I felt we lacked was football IQ and you can’t just say, ‘Let me go to craigslist or and get some football IQ.’”
Coughlin, Caldwell and Marrone are all in the first season of three-year contracts.
Asked if he will visit extensions for the trio, Khan said: “I don’t think that is something I would be addressing at this point. This just happened a year ago.”

The #Giants job is not Steve Wilks' job to lose or anything like that. But his interview is the most anticipated because it should bring clarity on the others (McDaniels, Shurmur).
IMO, Wilks needs to win over ownership, get them to overlook lack of head coaching experience.

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)

Wilks has been the one to watch with the Giants from the start. I wouldn't call him favorite, but he's the one that seems most realistic. That's been my gut feeling. Sense I get is that he has to blow away ownership in interview to convince Mara/Tisch to overlook lack of HC

I've heard that the Colts are a good landing spot for McDaniels, or really any HC because they have a franchise QB. I may be in the minority on that one. While Luck is a good QB, I think one of Indy's problems in addition to Luck's injury history is the lack of talent on the rest of the team. I don't see Luck as being Peyton-nesque in that he can overcome the talent deficiencies on the other side of the ball nor do I see the type of skill players around Luck that Peyton had. Outside of the Hilton and an aging Gore, they don't have good skill players. And the Oline is probably just as bad as Big Blue lol given Luck's propensity for getting sacked. Defensively, they don't have much to write home about finishing 30th in total defense this year.

So while McDaniels would have a lot to work with in Luck if he's healthy, there is a lot of work to do to get the rest of the team to a respectable level. Add to all of that the recent turmoil with the owner, GM, and HC, that would be huge red flags associated with taking that job.

It will be interesting to see how the coaching carousel plays out.

it's interesting

some of these blurbs make it sound like we need to win over the potential HC, not the other way around.
