Is it just me who hates Tony Romo as an announcer?

Vin_Cuccs : 1/7/2018 4:26 pm
Everybody praises and loves the guy, but I am not a fan at all.

Major exaggerations. Speaks in generalizations. Trys to predict every play. Everyone and everything is either the best ever or the worst ever. Way too much and always over the top. Makes odd sounds and noises.

Yelling and screaming for every play. Very difficult to listen to, and the fact that everyone heaps praise on him makes it worse.

In the last minute of the Jaguars vs Bills heard:

"This was the best game ever!"

"You might just be looking at the future best cornerback."

Just had to vent a little. Very tough to listen to.

As I said I said in the other thread
Canton : 1/7/2018 4:30 pm : link
He's already regarded as one of the better announcers in the game and he's only a rook. He'll get even better. Love his analysis.
I just commented about Romo being nauseating

he's gotta tone it down

a bit IMO. I think eventually he figures it out.
He wasn’t great today,

but overall, I think he’s been outstanding all year.
Like the Xs and Os he does.
BillT : 1/7/2018 4:34 pm : link
At the end of the game he was pointing out how TT was missing the WR making the out cut against the cover 4. Sure enough the guys were wide open. Then I though about how Eli would have seen that in an instant.

That was great stuff right there. He's actually been a breathe of fresh air all season.

I think goving him the A list games right off the bat was a mistake. How are you going to correct him when hes alr3ady getting the baller games? Not like they can take him off those prime games if he doesnt change his style. And he is a screamer. And his inner monologues for players are dumb. Today when Micah Hyde was going off:

"HEY! DID YOU SEE HYDE SQUIRT WATER AT THE FAN?! The fan was like 'yea you're outta here' but then Hyde squirts water at the fan and says, 'No, YOU'RE OUTTA HERE!' Ha ha haaaaaaaaa!"

Ugh

To be fair, though, consider how frustrating it must have been for Romo, knowing that he could have strolled onto the field and done a better job in the passing game than either of the two starting QBs... at least until the first hit.

He's much easier to take when the quarterbacks are playing well and seeing the same things he sees. Then he provides real insight into why the ball goes where it does.

Like ever. Even to the point where he just starts randomly yelling things out in the middle of a play when Nantz is calling it. He does provide good analysis though, that's true. But his non stop talking is annoying for 3 hours.
I don't know..
FatMan in Charlotte : 1/7/2018 4:48 pm : link
what was going on when he thought the Bills would get a "freebie" on the 10-second runoff when Taylor was injured.

Then he tried to pawn it off on getting bad info.

He's OK. I don't like how he screams and gets excited at minor plays.
The best in the business.

A nice novelty act when he first started, but the performance is declining as we move along.

Sorry, I can't listen to him second guess himself on rules incessantly, then try to act like everyone was confused by it. NO Tony, you owed the audience an apology.
Talks WAAAAY too much.

He was wrong thinking there was a freebie - true.
However, The ref never said there was a 10 sec run off and should have. But did you see where the 10 sec runoff was? I didn't. And the ref never said anything about the second one after the penalty

j_rud : 1/7/2018 5:57 pm : link
Some of his insights are excellent, but he's gotta let it breathe a little. He steps all over his partners feet to the point where it gets really annoying. If he can tone it down a little he can easily be one of the better commentators around, maybe even the best. He clearly knows the game. I think he's just gotta learn to not talk as much.
I think Tony is channeling
JohnF : 1/7/2018 6:16 pm : link
Hank Stram as an announcer. Hank had a habit of trying to call the play before it happened, based on the formation. Here's SB XXV radio feed with Jack Buck and Hank Stram:

trueblueinpw : 1/7/2018 10:56 pm : link
For everyone who says that he calls out the play before it happens, is that really a good thing? Anyway, he gets as many calls pre snap wrong as he gets correct and I’m not altogether sure which is worse.

I’ve always thought the most important quality in any sports commentator is to not get in the way of the game. That’s why I still think Summerall and Madden were the best. It’s great to draw out the big plays after they happen but I really don’t want or need pre snap guesses at what’s about to happen. Let the game play out on the field and then try to bring a little something to the event which isn’t already obvious.
Great announcer
RetroJint : 1/7/2018 11:33 pm : link
Conveys football knowledge without hitting you over the head with how much he knows. No pretensions . Great guy. Easy listen as opposed to somebody like Gruden, who mercifully is leaving the booth.

Romo: best analyst I heard this season. Worst: Tie: Ronde Barber & James Lofton

Something like this - "this is what we play for, this is it, a QB wants to be in this situation and needs to be successful"

For a pretty good in season QB, his post season work smelled.

Basically, there are so many morons out, ex-players hired because of their name or playing experience rather than what they bring as an announcer that if a person is even semi-coherent, he gets accolades.

I've long maintained that we'd be better off with color guys who know the sport and the nuances. That doesn't necessarily mean they played before. Guys like Trent Green, charles Davis, Dan Fouts or the Barber's might be well spoken, but they are terrible analysts.
I think he does a really good job
PaulBlakeTSU : 1/8/2018 8:37 am : link
breaking down what he's seeing and he is processing it quickly for viewers. Is he perfect? No, he's a bit too excitable and talks a bit too much. But he's a rookie at this and should improve upon it.

I, too, enjoyed the way he discussed the Cover 4 play at the end of the game.

I think he is already one of the best NFL color commentators out there.

Whether it's BBI or television or satellite radio, I want to hear guys that played or coached tell me what they see. Everybody else, including the douchebag network TV producers in the truck add little value.

Don't really care about delivery unless they're Scott Zolak and deliver their message as if they were suffering from Turrets Syndrome.

Romo loves the game and it comes through.
