NFT: What is your opinion of the Rocky movies?

Route 9 : 1/7/2018 10:23 pm
I always watch 1-6 (and Creed) a bit after Christmas and finish them up before the new year begins. It seems as if a lot of people my age (30, gonna be 31) took a liking to those movies. I guess it's because they were the old classics from "the old days" (70s 80s, lol).

The one thing I cannot do is watch the fights at the end for reason. What do you think of the series? Corny? Way too Philly for you? The main thing I like about the movies is the characters. I liked Rocky, Adrian, Apollo and of course Paulie is the one close jerk off friend (brother in law). I always thought IV was my favorite then I grew older and it got weird to me. SO many montages! Spoilers!

Which one is your favorite? Least?

The original is a great movie
hassan : 1/7/2018 10:27 pm : link
Even the second was still passably good then total trash until Creed a very good movie.
The original Rocky
nygfaninorlando : 1/7/2018 10:27 pm : link
is a classic and the best in my opinion. Rocky 3 was decent with Clubber Lang then it felt like things jumped the shark after that. Especially Rocky IV and Ivan Drago. I did enjoy Creed when it came out a couple years ago though.
Th only bad one is Rocky V
twostepgiants : 1/7/2018 10:34 pm : link
Everything else is either great or fun.

Route 9 : 1/7/2018 10:37 pm : link
Yep I hate Rocky V. I was just about to say that. Glad Rocky Balboa came out in 2006 or so to (kind of) erase the bad memories of Rocky V.

An older guy I worked with said he couldn't stand them and was sick of them by the 3rd one. I was only 3 when 5 was out in the movies.

Always loved "the Eye of the Tiger" song.
Overall, most are bad. Rocky is an all timer
Banks : 1/7/2018 10:42 pm : link
the 2nd and 5th are unwatchable for me. The 3rd and 4th are bad, but dumb fun. The montages are out of control in the 4th though. Of the newer films, I only saw Balboa and remember liking it, but it wasn't great.
The first is a great movie. an all time great sports movie IMO.
j_rud : 1/7/2018 10:44 pm : link
The second was very good. After that they were entertaining but a different kind of movie. It's almost like Rocky became an action hero type character.

Interesting (to me) side note: the part of Creed where Rocky is in the hospital was filmed in the hospital I work at, Crozer Chester Medical Center. My office is literally in the hallway that appears on film.

I don't really disagree, but bad can still be entertaining. Describes half of hollywood's output in the 80s lol

Was EVERYONE doing coke in the 80s?
Love em
mattlawson : 1/7/2018 10:53 pm : link
In a nostalgic, Merica sort of way. Not a ‘great film’ way.

used to love on TV when 1 would end and go right into 2. To me those are the best ones.

3 and 4 are on the same plane for me. And are all about the montages and the music. Look at the shiny muscles.

5 sucks ass. But yet I know a bunch of lines from it.

All the others are completely different movies.
Can anyone really make it through Rocky anymore?
Crispino : 1/7/2018 11:12 pm : link
It hasn’t stood the test of time for me. The fight scenes are ludicrous, and Stallone’s acting is...well...Stallone. Everything after the first passable one was unwatchable for me.
the 1st one is an academy award winner

I get what you mean. Got any good current movies to recommend for me So that I do not have to keep on watching the same old stuff? I don't even know what the hell is out anymore. I always check out the DVD/Blu-Ray section in Walmart in town but nothing looks interesting enough for me to invest in the time, plus I just don't recognize any of the new releases nor could I give you one sentence on what they were about if you held a gun to my head.

Only thing that looked familiar to me was CatDog (the Nickelodeon show) on DVD. the entire series.
I liked all of them except for V, with 1 being far and away the best.
Dave in Hoboken : 1/7/2018 11:26 pm : link
Sidenote: The real Rocky, that the character is based on, Chuck Wepner, aka 'The Bayonne Bleeder', from my hometown of Bayonne, is a family friend. He worked as a bouncer at a bar in Bayonne that my grandmother and grandfather owned and was very good friends with them for a very long time. My mom grew up knowing him.

I went back home last weekend to see my mom. I took her to Jersey Mikes in Bayonne (where she still lives) to get sandwiches, and Chuck Wepner was actually there. My mom and him spoke for like 15-20 mins. I shook his hand and said hi. He says he has another movie coming out in May of this year called the 'New Jersey Assassin.' He's 79 but you really wouldn't know it if you saw him in person. He's huge and his hand absolutely completely covered mine when he shook my hand. And even more surprising, depsite being a boxer all of those years and taking Muhamad Ali to the limit in his prime, Chuck is still all there mentally.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that.
Definitely disagree with a lot of you on Rocky 2
Stu11 : 1/7/2018 11:27 pm : link
I thought it was a classic right up there maybe a notch below 1, only because you just couldn't replicate a classic entirely. I agree 3 started a progressive slide downhill though Mr. T gave a decent performance in 3, and though the theme song wasn't at the level of the Bill Conti classic score Eye of the Tiger is a cool theme. 4 dove into 80's hell of montages and muscle close-ups. 5 was garbage, 6 was ok but just too godamn depressing and Creed was good but I think it gets a little overrated just because the series had become such shit.

If Creed didn't have the character of Rocky (and gave us the then current state of his character) and did not take place in the Rocky universe, I wouldn't have given one fuck about anything in that movie. Creed's pointless backstory of being the product of an affair for Creed? That whole backstory with the deaf girlfriend and fucking on Rocky's couch? LOL
The original was great.
smshmth8690 : 1/8/2018 12:03 am : link
The rest sucked. Adrian wakes up from a coma, and says, "win Rocky" stupid. It was also amazing how intelligent, and savvy both Rocky, and Adrian became. At least in the recent releases he made Rocky 'street level' again.
Plus Rocky

Agree with the masses - original Rocky is a great movie
mfsd : 1/8/2018 12:52 am : link
and boxing is really only an ancillary part of the story

2 through 4 got progressively sillier, but I still find them watching and entertaining. 5 is one of the worst movies ever filmed, 6 was a worthy nostalgic effort but still pretty silly
Years ago, I bought the Rocky box set, parts I - V

This was before Rocky Balboa, much less Creed.

Anyway, I took out V and dropped it straight in the trash. Where it belongs.

There's a movie titled Chuck that was released last spring and is now showing on Showtime, I believe. Liev Schreiber plays Chuck. It's supposed to be pretty good.
As for the Rocky films
Matt M. : 1/8/2018 6:25 am : link
The original was an excellent film. The rest of the original 5 get progressively camper, with V completely unwatchable. I just pretend it didn't exist. Rocky Balboa helped erase that film for me. I wanted to like Creed more, but it was eh. As someone said, if it wasn't attached to Rocky, I don't think I would have cared.

II is the polarizing one. People either love it (probably because Rocky wins) or hate it. I used to think it was my favorite, I think because the younger me liked seeing him win. But, I find it tough to watch now. However, I still get goosebumps from the moment Adrian wakes to the end of the subsequent training montage.

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 1/8/2018 8:59 am : link
My favorite, though it's not close to being the best, is Rocky IV. The absurdity of the Russian crowd turning on Drago & rooting for Rocky...hilarious.

Rocky III is probably the best one IMO.

'THE RUSSIAN IS CUT.'
They are timeless...
Chris684 : 1/8/2018 9:03 am : link
1 is a masterpiece.

2 is as good a sequel as there is.

Admittedly, 3 and 4 start to get a little silly but are still highly entertaining. Clubber Lang and Drago are both perfect villains.

5 was a dumpster fire.

The biggest surprise to me out of all the movies is how well done both Rocky Balboa and Creed were so many years after the fact. Maybe the expectations were just lower but both held up well to the amount of time that had passed by I thought.

What I learned about boxing from Rocky
jnoble : 1/8/2018 10:17 am : link
Its legal and not an immediate disqualification to toss your opponent WWE style into the corner to continue wailing on him. The ref will also not stop the fight even though one fighter is clearly being defeated and possibly about to die. Also punches land with the sound of someone dropping a bag of wet cement and nobody blocks or ducks many punches...in fact, getting one haymaker after another directly to the face will only make one mad and more determined to win
I'm 35 and spent most of my life thinking
aimrocky : 1/8/2018 10:34 am : link
the Rocky series is the best of all time. My order of preference is 1 & 2 (like them both equally), 4, 3, Balboa, 5 & Creed. The only reason I have Creed last is because I haven't seen it multiple times like the others, and it didn't WOW me the only time I had seen it.

I think the storyline in 2 is really strong, and winning the fight puts it on the same level as 1. I prefer 4 to 3 because of the cheesy montages and music. I wasn't a big fan of 3 at all.

Probably one of the most underrated parts of the series in the first film was when Rocky noticed his shorts were wrong and the press guy or whoever brushed it off as it didn't matter...as if he....didn't matter and this will all be over soon. Great stuff.

To be honest, I don't even really remember what my expectations were going into Rocky Balboa. Even THAT movie is around 12-13 years old. I just remember thinking "Oh yeah? they're making a new movie? If handled right, it is not hard to re-end the series topping Rocky V"

I remember seeing Rocky Balboa with a group of friends at 1pm or so on opening day. The one friend of my friend got all paranoid thinking we wouldn't get in because it was sold out and he bought all of our tickets for us. I still never paid that guy back to this day...

I think other than our group and maybe one couple up front the entire theatre was empty.

That's one thing Stallone supposedly wanted to "fix" in IV. So, instead he broke a rib filming the match with Drago from a punch by Lundgren.
