NFT: Extending WiFi at home

haper : 1/10/2018 12:17 pm
My existing Fios Router wifi is poor to one room in my house and I assume I need a wifi extender. I also have a older computer whose wifi strength is very high but is running an older wifi standard (probably 802.11g), i'd like to purchase an extender for it and then hardwire from the extender to the laptop for 802.11ac.

I'm looking at the google wifi product that includes 3 extenders for $270. But I also see the NETGEAR AC1200 Wi-Fi Range Extender, 3 would cost under $200. Both support up to 802.11ac, 2.4 and 5MHz and have ethernet ports for hardwiring.

Is there a reason to spend the extra $70 for the google product, other than my wife saying she prefers the look much better than the NetGear. Any other recommendations?
I can't speak to the Netgear product

Meant Google Wifi
If it's FIOS, it's easy, especially of you have FIOS TV

buy a network bridge from Verizon....less than a hunj

you take the co-ax cable that goes into your FIOS TV Tuner and connect it to a splitter...the splitter comes with the bridge, 2 cables out of the splitter, 1 goes back to the TV and the other goes into the bridge. The new bridge gives you another wireless network on 5G...you'll also gain 2 more wired RJ-45 ports
I'm not great with this stuff, that said

Netgear Orbi. Life changing...(expensive though)
Are you paying to rent the Fios router?
jlukes : 1/10/2018 1:53 pm : link
If so, you might want to buy your own modem and router like the Archer C9 Or Netget Nighthawk to see if that fixes your range issues. At the very worst, you eventually pay for the equipment by saving in the hardware rental fees.
I bought..

the Nighthawk on sale for $199 and it eliminates the need for a signal amplifier or extender. WiFi is strong all over the house.
I went with a Portal 2 pack and set up a mesh network

Really easy and fast internet all over my relatively spread out place.
i dont think you can buy your own router with FIOS

I was thinking of getting one of these. We can't stream TV when our son is playing Madden with his friends. Does this work well? Can you hard wire a tv to this?
Stay away from propietary solutions

Go mesh. I have Google Wi-Fi and love it. It's expandable so you won't have any concerns there. Only thing you need to make sure you have ethernet running from your ONT and not coax. Verizon will charge around $100~ to switch, but I've heard people getting them to do it for nothing.

fyi, just looked at the netGear site and they say the NightHawk will not replace the Fios router. But the NightHawk can work in conjunction w the Fios Router after a little tweaking.
I have the Netgear AC1200 RE.

It works fine, but it does treat the extender as a separate network, so you have to physically switch if you're using a mobile device. Not the end of the world, but a little annoying. If I could do it all over again, I would use Eero or Google wifi, which move from device to device as you move around the house.

If you're married to the Netgear extender, it will work fine for you.

So this will eliminate the need for the Fios Router and I'll have straight ethernet from the ONT to one of my Google wifi pieces of hardware (not sure what they're called). Once i have that the Google wifi signal will be shared among all of the Google wifi hardware I have throughout the house?
Set up a MoCA network...
DonQuixote : 1/10/2018 3:45 pm : link
...way better than repeaters/extenders.

Yeah. It's still FIOS (if that's what you have) but won't have to use the Verizon device. Then you can put 2, 3, or 10 mesh units wherever you need them.

Yes it works well and since you gain an RJ-45 port, you can put a network cable directly into your TV, removing all the other crap that happens with WiFi.....

awesome...I love the thing...the physical set-up is a breeze....the s/w setup is relatively easy as well, but depending on your level of expertise, you may need to give Verizon a ring....it only takes about 10 minutes....1-800-567-6789
