NFT: WFAN afternoon show

I don't want to find something new outside of WFAN. They're not great, but as some have mentioned it would be substantially better with just Gray and Carlin. Bart Scott isn't necessary, and will be even more exposed once football season ends.

The Giants are pretty much the only story in town right now.

The show is God awful.

If you listened to Francessa for years, you know that he would not agree that the Giants are the only story and he would not be talking about them nearly as much. He would be talking ad nauseum about baseball, lack of free agency signings, Yankees pitching staff, etc.

when they talked more about the baseball strike than they did football, during the football season (think it was '94); even several weeks after the baseball season would've been over.

I eventually tuned into Mike's show occasionally years later, but don't miss so much Yankee talk.

Bart Scott adds great insight from a players perspective.

A couple of weeks ago, he said Vernon has a reputation for missing games. He doesn't even know his own sport.

to force me to change the sports talk station. I can't listen to WFAN in the afternoons. I tried. I just think they are brutally bad. When I am able to summon up the strength and patience to listen to one of their points, I completely disagree with that point. They suck. I wish them well...but they fucking suck.

They play clips that are supposed to be funny, like Bart Scott not being able to read simple commercial copy or something. And then Boomer forces laughter, saying, "That's great! More of that, please!"

And then Gregg Giannotti does an impersonation of Chris Carlin.

It's so transparent. WFAN has to know this thing is a trainwreck.

And admits this. How are they supposed to do this show from March-October when one of the three hosts admits he knows zero about the game? Did they even give these people a tryout or sample shows before putting the together?

If they are going to make it as a trio, it will take some time.

I'm onto ESPN radio now..and that sucks too..but not as bad as wfan afternoon is now..pretty bad

At first, they all seemed to be trying too hArd. Now the convo seems more natural.

BART Scott is funny but does not add as much as you would expect from an ex player. The other day he was going on about how Brady was the greatest winner but not the greatest QB. He beat the point to death.

I found Francesca tedious. His rants were amusing but he was often so obviously unprepared and his belittling Of callers was tedious. He was a legend but it was time for some new voices

Giants since they started. I didn't think i would like Bart Scott but I actually like his take on football and he's kind of a loose cannon. Maggie Gray is also pretty good. I had a love/hate relationship with Francesca, his interviews were usually pretty good but the majority of his show he was just a pompous/rude ass who rarely talked Giants so this show I am actually listening to more.

there is no feel or flow between the three of them. I'm not a fan of the ESPN crew but they have a familiarity and flow the new FAN crew lacks. Plus they provide little insight, Scott aside.

It is clear that they're getting better at not talking over each other and getting a feel for who's gonna talk.

They talk sports. Some of it's pretty good, some of it's not, but it's the same as any other sports talk show. You can hear the same kind of thing on ESPN Radio or a bunch of satellite channels. It's not the worst, it's not the best, it's just an ordinary show.

Which, after 30 years of Mike (with and without the Mad Dog), is a step down for WFAN. Very hard to find that must-listen person or team. And Francessa wasn't that when he started, he was just another guy. They'll have to figure out who they think the guy is, then be patient.

Anyone thinks it's better than terrible.

Carlin knows zero about sports.
Bart Scott the worst combo of arrogance and ignorance.
Gray asks a question then gives her answer to it before finishing her sentence.

show any way you slice it. I've been listening hoping to find any semblance of good talk radio, and it is just awful.

And its probably going to really be bad when its just basketball and baseball to talk about. Imagine hearing Bart Scott and the lady host talk about baseball. lol

Gio is legitimately a better version of carton or what carton wished he could be. He’s funny and knows when to cut the shtick. Plus his impersonations are amazingly good

is basically a cross between Beningo, Roberts, Francesa, and Jody McDonald. He kinda sounds like each one of them at different times, probably because he spent so much time with all of them when he was their producer.

I personally think Giannotti is a great addition, and he has made the morning show exponentially better, even better than when the show was at its highest popularity with Carton and Boomer.

As I said the other day, the afternoon show needs time. I've always liked Carlin, but Maggie Gray is a poor man's Kim Jones and Bart Scott just doesn't really fit in. I can't wait to hear him talk baseball this spring! Hahahahahahaaa

But have started listening more to Roberts & Benigno.

Roberts OWNS that show. He dominates the conversation while Benigno just chimes in 'Yeah, bro. Agreed.'

Benigno is funny when it comes to his Jets rants, but he's pretty blah otherwise.

They seem like they are fighting for airtime, no flow. They need to get rid of one of them.

Morning Show is very good.

You do not fucking need a sports flash every 20 minutes. I know it's just an excuse to pound advertising down your throat, but I'd prefer just commercials to 'The Mink Man's' droning commentary.

Can't believe they still do that. Updates were a huge deal when the station started because sports news was hard to come by. In particular getting timely scores was huge. Now everyone can get updates any time they want with their phone so what's the point?

Fun fact - in the first year or so WFAN had updates every 15 minutes. It was ridiculous. Between commercials and updates the hosts couldn't get any flow going. There was a near mutiny I think and mgmt relented and the 20/20 was born. It was great and played a big role in the station's success but it's a relic now.

It was my understanding that they don't do the 20/20 updates anymore as of Jan. 1 - just top of the hour? With stupid CBS Sports minutes sprinkled in?

I think you missed his point on Eli, it wasn't that Eli is bad it was having to deal with an aging superstar QB on the way down ala Montana, e.g.

They talk hockey 32.6% of the time. Bart is a big fan and surprisingly knowledgeable. You should definitely check it out.

to be more in-depth knowledge of New York, New York sports, and New York sports culture. Bart Scott admittedly knows nothing about baseball and his only connection to the area was that he played three or four years with the Jets.

You need people with New York sports knowledge pumping through their veins.
