Concerning Jeremy Shockey tweet

Ned In Atlanta : 1/10/2018 5:25 pm
Admittedly don’t know any back story but saw this today from his official twitter account

Don't like hospitals but I'll do any study to relive my head pain. Praying for the best its in… instagram.com/p/BdyPuzWAE6a/

Obviously speculation but wonder if he is dealing with football related head trauma/CTE. People hate Shockey but I saw him eating lunch in south beach a few years ago with Rosenhaus and he couldn’t have been nicer. Hope he’s alright

He was among my favorite players back in 2002 but the way he left the team just didn't sit right with me. I hope he is okay and that this isn't anything serious or long term.

when I was in Miami for the ND game in November. Went to a dive bar to watch the games early saturday afternoon, only two people in the place were me and my buddy until he and a couple of his high school buddies from Oklahoma walked in.

They sat right next to us at the bar and hung out for a few hours. He was very open and honest about anything I asked him about the Giants. He loves the Giants still. Had nothing but good things to say about Coughlin and Eli.

Putting it mildly he doesn't like Reese.
I remember that fg gif - it hurt but I still thought it was funny

Shockey is one of my all time favourite players. In fact he significantly enhanced my interest in the Giants. Childish and not 100% all positive granted, but for awhile he epitomised the reasons to watch football. His passion for the game was infectious.

The day he was traded was a punch in the gut for me. The narrative at the time didn't sit well with me either.

Care to expand on the above? It may help solve a mystery I was wondering about for 10 years now.

Thank you in advance.

not to go into specifics on Reese and what Shockey said. It wasnt exactly a secret that they didnt see eye to eye, but it was much worse than I even thought.

I thought he would be a lot more complementary of Fassel than he was, didnt say anything bad but he had nothing but great things to say about Coughlin. I only talked to him for a couple hours and talked about all kinds of things, he was absolutely hilarious and his buddies were cool too.

His tenure with the Giants would not have ended the eay it did if Reese wasnt running the show.

We read a lot about a fractured relationship between him and Eli/Coughlin but from his prespective that was not the case at all.

He was hopeful the Giants would fire Reese and hire Gettelman back in November. Loves Gettelman for sure

At the Fountainbleau two years ago. He was so nice to everyone and spent time to talk with people and took tons of pictures. He was in incredible shape.
In the ensuing four seasons (NO & CAR)
Modus Operandi : 1/10/2018 6:51 pm : link
Since the "empty suit that Jeremy should've slugged" traded him, Shockey averaged 44 catches for 478 yds and 2.5 TDs. This while being the highest paid TE in the league. That's below average production.

By comparison, the fifth round pick who supplanted Shockey the year prior, and himself overrated by fans, averaged 33 rec. for 494 yds and just under 6 TDs over the same time frame.

That's before you even get into Shockey's homophobia, undercutting Eli and general assholishness.

Friend of mine was at a poker game with other friends and O'hara was there. (this was years ago). After O'hara had a few beers in him my friend asked him how or why Eli's production improved this past season. O'hara said "two words"... "Jeremy Shockey". meaning, now that Shockey was off of the team Eli was a new person. He said Shockey would come back into the huddle after a bad pass and would say things like "nice pass asshole" to Eli.

Shockey may have matured over the years since being out of the game but he was a douche. I can still remember him showing up Eli time and time again throwing his hands up in disgust Everytime he felt he was open and wasn't thrown to. He acted like he was twelve. He was a disruptive force on the team. Let's face it, you know there's a problem when your best season was your rookie season.

player, but he's a case of wasted potential. If he had taken himself and his career more seriously, he had just as much talent and ability to have the same career Jason Witten had. One can argue he was more physically gifted.

Unfortunately he's actually guilty of all the things people project upon Odell Beckham. He wasn't a great teammate, wasn't fully invested in keeping himself in shape. He was out partying hard at every turn. Might even have had a problem with drinking too much based on his las vegas antics. If he played in the same era of cameras everywhere and social media, I wonder how long he would have lasted.

I know his home situation wasn't good and that's a big part of his development, but it's a shame to consider what he could have been with a better approach.

Maybe was being tongue in cheek? I would think that with those O lines, a guy like O'Hara, Seubert, Diehl, Snee would tell Shockey to chill the hell out on talking like that in the huddle.

I was @ buddy's bachelor party in 2010 & saw Shockey @ Lafitte's on Bourbon Street. And while I'm not one to approach celebrities, feeling like they're entitled to their privacy, I was a few (more like 8 or 9) deep & figured, 'What the hell? It's Shockey!'

Spoke to him for a minute or two. I told him I was a big Giants fan & thanked him for his time in NY. He was very nice and said he loved his time there & wished it had ended differently.

Odell isn’t a drinker and by all accounts is a great teammate. Only similarities are taking dumb 15 yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties which are by products of their competitiveness intensity and immaturity

This is EXACTLY what I thought, even as soon as Shockey got hurt in '07, I thought it could really be a blessing and help Eli and the Giants.

I wish him well, but as athletic as he was, it was a classic case of addition by subtraction.

Actually his play and contributions here are understated by many and your take of shockey is downright sad. When shockey was a Giant the team went to the playoffs 4 out of the 6 seasons he played here. He was a cancer? Oh really. When's the last time time this franchise went to the playoffs 4-6 seasons? Only one other time in our lifetime. 84-89.

Cancer my ass.
He was a baby at times
djm : 1/10/2018 10:45 pm : link
And he probably wore out his welcome. But it's a stretch to call the guy a cancer.

Player bitched in the huddle? Uh Jerry rice used to eviserate Joe Montana and Steve young. Doesn't mean it's right or wrong but many pass catchers do it.

How effective was the offense when shockey played here? How consistent? Did the player want it? Did the player play through countless injuries?

But yea, a former teammate ripped him in a power game. So there is that.
will always love Shockey

Ten Ton Hammer : 1/11/2018 12:00 am : link
Yeah, they made the playoffs four of 6 years he was on the roster. They should have. They were good teams. It's not like he carried them there. He was a part of good team, not the reason for their achievement. If anything, you can make that argument for Barber, not Shockey. And he was probably the third best offensive player once they got Plaxico.
And yeah, cancer can be argued for.

Wow, just wow!! I didn't know you had it in you Modus? Truer words couldn't have been said. The final straw for me was at the Green Bay game when Coughlin didn't hear the call and Shockey pulled Coughlins head set off his ears and gave him the answer, then snapped it back on his head. MAGA

So we can't attribute team accomplishments to one guy but we can attribute a team's successful playoff run to a player's absence? No. We can't really do either. We can only go by what our eyes told us when watching the team play. Shockey was a good player who helped the team win games.

my point is
djm : 1/11/2018 10:05 am : link
if the guy was a cancer the team isn't winning as much as the Giants won with Shockey. The Giants won with Shockey. You guys love a villain. Giants fans were chanting Tiki sucks at the super bowl 42 parade. Best moment in franchise history and fans are bashing a former player who helped the team win games. It's weird. Fans love to find fault with players and Shockey certainly had a few. But saying the guy was a cancer is a stretch. You're citing incident that happened but don't necessarily correlate to losing. Shockey yelled at Eli. Ok fine. Does that mean he hindered Eli? Did Eli really play that much better after Shockey got hurt? He played like Shit in the game Shockey did her hurt. Eli had played well at times before WITH Shockey. After the injury and into the playoffs Eli cut down on the INTs. Correlation? Maybe...and I will be the first to say you shouldn't change one thing about that run. Maybe his injury was a blessing...but the guy still helped this team win games throughout his tenure here.
the SF playoff debacle typified Shockey. On the surface, a big game.
Victor in CT : 1/11/2018 10:05 am : link
7 catches, 68 yards, 1 TD. But look deeper:

*gets in a fight with fans throwing soda and ice into the crowd during the game
*after that drops a SURE TD right in his hands that would have iced the game. this is conveniently forgotten becuase of the officiating mess on the last play.

from ESPN:
Jeremy Shockey, the Giants' brash rookie tight end, taunted the 49ers' sideline after just his second reception -- and threw ice water in the direction of heckling fans in a moment of frustration on the New York sideline.

But Shockey, who had seven catches for 68 yards, dropped a potential TD pass late in the third quarter, forcing New York to kick a field goal.

Million $$ talent, 5 cent head.

PaulBlakeTSU : 1/11/2018 10:06 am : link
as he took a pounding during his career and I truly hope he gets the help he needs. I would be terrified if I were in his position.

It feels a bit wrong to disparage the guy while he's going through a scary health situation as a result of the sport, but this thread has turned more into a discussion of his time as a Giant.

In that regard, I couldn't agree more with the notion that he was everything (in a bad way) that people incorrectly say Odell is.

Shockey was an all-world talent who laid it all out on the field, but he was a malcontent who showed up the team and the quarterback on several occasions. He would run his own routes, he would skip the huddle, and he would make countless obvious gestures indication fault with his teammates. The team was better off without him because if there isn't trust between the QB and a WR/TE, particuarly in the type of offense GIlbride ran, then it will only lead to disaster.

People hate Shockey?
Beezer : 1/11/2018 10:06 am : link

Maybe it's more that a lot of people just thought he was a dumbass at times. Might not be able to find a Giants fan who didn't appreciate his talent and grit.

djm : 1/11/2018 10:09 am : link
was his injury a blessing in disguise? It led to Victor Cruz.

See how easy that is? Give credit to KEvin Boss for EMERGING when Shockey got hurt. Maybe that's the biggest thing to take from Shockey's injury because I have new for all of you, if Boss doesn't emerge, we aren't winning super bowl 42 if some slob is playing TE. We didn't miss Shockey because of Boss.

There are people on this thread saying the guy was total shit and a team cancer.
I think there's one person here who called him a cancer
Dr. D : 1/11/2018 10:48 am : link
I didn't. But it was pretty clear that he and Eli were often "not on the same page". It seemed many INTs and incompletions resulted when Eli targeted where Shockey was supposed to be. Gilbride's O was complicated and Shockey seemed to run his own routes too often.

It was also clear that Shockey often showed up Eli, who at the time was still a young QB, possibly struggling with confidence. I think that's what O'Hara was referencing and I'll take his word for it over anyone on BBI. And he probably also demanded the ball even when he was covered.

That doesn't mean I hate him (I don't hate anyone). I wish him well.
