If they are down on Smith that’s fine, he was never a can’t miss prospect, but if that’s the case they should have dealt him to fill another hole at some point. Wasting him away in no mans land while playing a retread like Gonzo doesn’t accomplish anything for anyone. It’s mind boggling that of all the toiling high draft picks and guys who can’t get out of their own way due to injuries Fulmer is the guy who broke out and overcame the injury bug.
When you take the long view, it's not mind boggling. Leaving the Mets was the best thing for Justin Turner and Daniel Murphy, too.
