Conditional 2018 7th round draft pick for Cockrell?

TheMick7 : 1/12/2018 9:41 am
What happened w/this? Does it go to the Steelers? Were other agreements made? I haven't seen any draft boards where this pick belongs to the Steelers!

Of course it goes to the Steelers.

The original reports were the Steelers got our 7th rounder. I've seen nothing since that has said otherwise.
what
Eric from BBI : Admin : 1/12/2018 9:53 am : link
sucks is Cockrell had his best season as a pro and is now a FA. Hope we can re-sign him to a reasonable deal because his career was very inconsistent until this past season.
The FanSpeak mock
Pete in MD : 1/12/2018 10:00 am : link
draft website has it correct.
That's what I thought Eric,
TheMick7 : 1/12/2018 10:00 am : link
it's just that in all mocks,in all of the postings of teams' draft picks for the draft, I haven't seen it anywhere.Luckily,we should be getting a supplemental 4th for Hankins.
I will take
TommyWiseau : 1/12/2018 10:09 am : link
Cockrell over Apple anyday
I really hope they resign him....
GuzzaBlue : 1/12/2018 10:11 am : link
I'd be very content with him and Jackrabbit as starters and also would resign DRC for the slot. You could then either find a 4th and 5th CB later in the draft or bargain bin FA's. Or see thru the whole Apple situation.

Eric, if he sucked for us we wouldn't want to re-sign him.
Plus, it depends on what the new coaches are looking for.
The Giants should still wind up with 7 selections going into the draft
Vincenzo : 1/12/2018 10:22 am : link
as they will be receiving a comp pick for losing Hankins. 4th rounder?
Yes
NikkiMac : 1/12/2018 10:24 am : link
Vincenso that’s correct
Cockrell played ok,
Doomster : 1/12/2018 10:33 am : link
on a bad defense.....you don't overpay for him!
Don't lose any sleep over losing a 7th Round pick.
Emlen'sGremlins : 1/12/2018 10:34 am : link
Gettleman is going to trade out of our 1st Round position and get us a boatload of picks for this year and next!
Wish we had an extra
Metnut : 1/12/2018 10:50 am : link
year option on him. He played pretty well for us last year all things considered.
turned out to be a good deal for us
Andy in Boston : 1/12/2018 11:40 am : link
he's a solid NFL corner.
Actually...
Giant John : 1/12/2018 11:46 am : link
I heard an announcer say in one of our last games that Cockrell was one of the top rated cornerbacks in the league for the last 4 games. I think we should keep him but agree about not overpaying. Worst case very good depth.
He's tenacious and hard nosed
JonC : 1/12/2018 12:09 pm : link
but his instincts and techniques need a lot of work. I don't think he's starter material.

In your opinion can instincts be improved upon? Or is it something that you just kind of "have"?

Technique can obviously be fixed/coached/changed whatever you want to call it, but do instincts ever change? (maybe with some experience?)

arcarsenal : 1/12/2018 12:28 pm : link
NYG would be wise to retain him.

He had a very solid year here and CB depth is crucial. I can't see him costing too much.
Really like Cockrell
Peppers : 1/12/2018 12:28 pm : link
He's the type of player good defenses have and in todays game good depth a CB can not be understated.

Yes, reps and familiarity in a system can breed confidence that speeds up recognition and instincts. He looks like he's thinking too much at times and then panics and starts grabbing his man.

Considering it was his first year here the thinking too much comes as no surprise. If you were calling the shots and feel like more reps might improve confidence/instincts do you see him as a starter?

Just curious, as a lot of change is still coming including defensive scheme from the looks of it.
I don't think he's a starter
JonC : 1/12/2018 12:58 pm : link
except perhaps at nickel, which is why they brought him in.

The bigger question is Apple, he's the other boundary CB. If he's gone, they need to infuse his spot with talent. That could push Cockrell into the starter's role, but longer term they should be able to do better.

Understood. Thanks for the response JohnC.
He is a backup
Vanzetti : 1/12/2018 2:01 pm : link
Let somebody else sign him as a starter and Giants will get back that draft pick

Because we’re going to get someone better than Cockrell with our 7th round pick?
Cockrell is a top FA priority
BigBlueHens : 1/12/2018 2:50 pm : link
His play was questionable in the beginning of the year, but once he learned the playbook, he played very well. Remember, he was traded real close to the start of the season. The day they made the final 53.

And he'll have a new playbook soon, like every other player, because the whole coaching staff will change.
Can he play in the new system?

Can be possible if they don’t sign much in FA the pick they get back in 2019 draft better than what they gave , Ravens do deals like this all the time with comp pick in mind
Cockrell should be re-signed
Jay on the Island : 1/12/2018 7:13 pm : link
He was very good for the Giants last year and the Giants have several question marks at CB. The only sure thing is Jenkins. If the Giants cut DRC they will be relying on Apple which is recipe for disaster. Cockrell would provide insurance and still be a de-facto starter as the 3rd CB. Ideally they would lock him up for 2-3 years.
