sucks is Cockrell had his best season as a pro and is now a FA. Hope we can re-sign him to a reasonable deal because his career was very inconsistent until this past season.
it's just that in all mocks,in all of the postings of teams' draft picks for the draft, I haven't seen it anywhere.Luckily,we should be getting a supplemental 4th for Hankins.
I'd be very content with him and Jackrabbit as starters and also would resign DRC for the slot. You could then either find a 4th and 5th CB later in the draft or bargain bin FA's. Or see thru the whole Apple situation.

Eric, if he sucked for us we wouldn't want to re-sign him.
Plus, it depends on what the new coaches are looking for.
The Giants should still wind up with 7 selections going into the draft Â
I heard an announcer say in one of our last games that Cockrell was one of the top rated cornerbacks in the league for the last 4 games. I think we should keep him but agree about not overpaying. Worst case very good depth.
but his instincts and techniques need a lot of work. I don't think he's starter material.
In your opinion can instincts be improved upon? Or is it something that you just kind of "have"?
Technique can obviously be fixed/coached/changed whatever you want to call it, but do instincts ever change? (maybe with some experience?)
Yes, reps and familiarity in a system can breed confidence that speeds up recognition and instincts. He looks like he's thinking too much at times and then panics and starts grabbing his man.

Considering it was his first year here the thinking too much comes as no surprise. If you were calling the shots and feel like more reps might improve confidence/instincts do you see him as a starter?
Just curious, as a lot of change is still coming including defensive scheme from the looks of it.
except perhaps at nickel, which is why they brought him in.
The bigger question is Apple, he's the other boundary CB. If he's gone, they need to infuse his spot with talent. That could push Cockrell into the starter's role, but longer term they should be able to do better.

His play was questionable in the beginning of the year, but once he learned the playbook, he played very well. Remember, he was traded real close to the start of the season. The day they made the final 53.

And he'll have a new playbook soon, like every other player, because the whole coaching staff will change.
Can he play in the new system?
Let somebody else sign him as a starter and Giants will get back that draft pick
Can be possible if they don’t sign much in FA the pick they get back in 2019 draft better than what they gave , Ravens do deals like this all the time with comp pick in mind
He was very good for the Giants last year and the Giants have several question marks at CB. The only sure thing is Jenkins. If the Giants cut DRC they will be relying on Apple which is recipe for disaster. Cockrell would provide insurance and still be a de-facto starter as the 3rd CB. Ideally they would lock him up for 2-3 years.
The original reports were the Steelers got our 7th rounder. I've seen nothing since that has said otherwise.

He had a very solid year here and CB depth is crucial. I can't see him costing too much.

Understood. Thanks for the response JohnC.
Because we’re going to get someone better than Cockrell with our 7th round pick?
