Tarbay ISportsWeb: New York Giants: Analyzing GM Dave Gettleman’s draft tendencies

Schwartz NYP: Giants’ hiring plan of attack going into playoff weekend
“The Giants insider prefers Shurmur to Patricia and prefers Patricia to McDaniels, lauding Shurmur’s work with the Vikings, while heavily criticizing McDaniels’ tenure as head coach of the Broncos. The insider also praised Shurmur for his two years as head coach of the Browns, stating he “did the right thing’’ by going with young, homegrown players, an approach that produced only nine wins and eventually got him fired.
“He is solid,’’ the Giants insider said of Shurmur.
Hiring Shurmur could allow Steve Spagnuolo to remain as defensive coordinator. The two got their NFL initiation in 1999 on Andy Reid’s staff with the Eagles and spent eight years together in Philadelphia.”

Off of evaluation alone if we were to rank last years Draft QBs with this years:

Deshaun Watson
Josh Rosen
Sam Darnold
Mitch Trubisky
Baker Mayfield
Patrick Mahomes

Jared Tokarz (@NFLDraftInsider)

Talked to scouts/watched film

Rosen is the better QB if you’re looking for a QB to start now. concern is, is he 100% in this?questions authority, doesn’t need football.

Darnold not as polished/born leader.Eat sleeps breaths football. playmaker. Needs a little work

Jared Tokarz (@NFLDraftInsider)

The #Giants are the perfect situation for Sam Darnold. Eli and Darnold have the same mindsight. Obsessed with football. Darnold needs a few years. PERFECT

Jared Tokarz (@NFLDraftInsider)

Honestly, #Giants should be praying for Darnold. He’s the better long term play. Under the tutelage of Eli? He could be your next franchise QB

I want to get excited about Shurmur
Chris684 : 1/13/2018 7:16 am : link
but I just can’t. Possibly bringing back Spagnuolo? That would be just about the worst case scenario, emerging from this search with McAdoo staff members still in place. Spags is a good man, but his time should be up here in any capacity.

To me, Shurmur would represent another Mara “safe” plan. Sure he’s got a really nice track record as QB guru/OC, but that’s not HC. I’m also not sure what makes his personal stint as HC in Cleveland any better than anyone else’s failure there.

Rapoport Where things stand for Cardinals, Colts, Giants, Lions vacancies
“New York Giants
The Giants have not officially eliminated any candidates, but it's clear there are four left with legitimate chances at the head coaching job -- McDaniels, Patricia, Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, and Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. Patricia has received a lot of love inside the building, but the search is not to the point where anyone is considered a favorite. In fact, Shurmur is highly regarded inside the Giants' building, far more than people realize. As for Wilks, the respect GM Dave Gettleman has for him has gone a long way, and he's very much in the picture. This remains open, though a Vikings loss could force a Monday decision between Shurmur and Wilks.”

Duggan Giants' Devon Kennard explains what it's like being a free agent for a team without a coach
"When I say (I want to return), it's just the respect and confidence that I have in the organization overall and the owners and assuming they've hired a great GM and they're going to hire a great coach," Kennard said after training NFL hopefuls at Parabolic in Manalapan. "There are a lot of questions there, so I don't know if it's going to make sense or what that's going to look like, but I'm hopeful."

Stapleton The Record: Patriots DC Matt Patricia: 3 reasons why he's moved to front of Giants head coaching pack
“according to a source familiar with the Giants' thinking, with Patricia being viewed as the likeliest of the three to end up as the successor to Ben McAdoo, who was fired Dec. 4.”

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)
1/13/18, 9:36 AM
Just because Patricia has emerged at the front of pack for Giants, that does not mean he's the next head coach. Go back at read what I've written.
Lions and Giants for Patricia, that's why it was complicated and I shied away from calling him "the favorite" without a disclaimer

Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton)
1/13/18, 9:39 AM
I wouldn't say that Shurmur is the Giants' 3rd choice. As I've written, he definitely opened eyes in the interview and his resume is solid.

Remember: Wilks is only "4th" because of the McAdoo factor. In other years, he might be the guy.
