Per Rapoport- Wilks still in play

Sean : 1/13/2018 7:56 am
He is stating McDaniels is the favorite in Indy, Patricia in Detroit & it may be between Shurmur & Wilks for the Giants. Arizona also looking at Shurmur & Wilks.

Bottom line is no one knows. If Wilks was the guy though, why isn’t he hired? This would allow a head start on filling assistant positions. That is a reason I think it is between Patricia & Shurmur. Lions are a huge wildcard though.

We aren’t losing a lot of assistants by waiting. Norv Turner would have been nice though

Yeah but not his entire family
Good .... something about Wilks, that I like.

"As for Wilks, the respect GM Dave Gettleman has for him has gone a long way, and he's very much in the picture."

We will see ....
So
George : 1/13/2018 8:06 am : link
does this mean that Wilks is the so-called "Dark Horse" candidate? Or is there someone else lurking in the shadows?
I like Wilks....
Fishmanjim57 : 1/13/2018 8:06 am : link
I'm glad he's still an option.
Yet, Paul Schwartz states in today’s paper
RottenApple : 1/13/2018 8:10 am : link
that Wilks is not in consideration at this time.
Pretty sure
Big Rick in FL : 1/13/2018 8:15 am : link
Every Giants writer has said Wilks is out of it. I'll take their word over Rapoport.
Give Peppers from BBI credit
Chris684 : 1/13/2018 8:19 am : link
He has been saying so all along, even after Schwartz and others had Wilks out.
Can’t wait until
bradshaw44 : 1/13/2018 8:20 am : link
They announce Cowher.
Bottom line
SLIM_ : 1/13/2018 8:35 am : link
Nobody knows. It is very easy to go out on a limb and point to the 3 candidates still in the playoffs. One can logically think that Wilks would be hired by now.

Maybe they want a second round of interviews and think that waiting another couple of days (or 9) outweighs the benefit of losing an assistant or two.

There are 3 people who definitely know (John Mara, Tisch and Gettleman) which way they are leaning. Maybe Chris Mara may be in the loop also for obvious reasons. Outside possibility that Spags may know if the favorite has identified him to stay on. That's about it. There should be no reason to have any leaks with that small a pool of people.
Please end!
Mdgiantsfan : 1/13/2018 8:39 am : link
If Wilks is the guy, it would've been done by now. It feels like report after report is just spitballing to a certain degree. Musical chairs for the "favorite" for each team.

This just seems so odd that 4 teams needing coaches and not one of them has unofficially found their HC. Especially given that all expected candidates have interviewed. While I know nothing can be official, we all know how those decisions are leaked almost always. And again 4 teams all being linked to 2 or 3 favorites but still no decision.

I'll be so glad when this mess is finally over.
Can’t wait til
cokeduplt : 1/13/2018 8:47 am : link
This is over. It seems like Wilks might be the fall back if no Patricia.
to be honest
Tom from LI : 1/13/2018 8:48 am : link
nobody knows anything. They are all spit balling. There are no leaks coming out of Giants Central this time around.

The fact that Wilks hasn't been hired yet means they have their eye on somebody else.. He is still in play if the doomsday scenario happens..

Otherwise why wait.. get to work and build your staff. Start evaluating the talent on the team.

I am all for Wilks if they can't get Patricia or Shurmur. Big NOOOOO to McDaniels.
Of course he "is"
ZogZerg : 1/13/2018 8:51 am : link
The Giants don't want to look bad if they can't land one of the top 3.
I hope Rapoport is right
Gregorio : 1/13/2018 8:53 am : link
and Wilks is still in play. I like his leadership qualities.

Good point about Wilks not being hired yet though. It does indicate he's not NYG's first choice.

Getting this hire right is so important. It is really difficult to evaluate someone's potential to lead successfully.
If Wilks was their top choice
arniefez : 1/13/2018 8:55 am : link
he be the HC now. Obviously their top choice is still coaching. Of course he's still in play. But he's their 2nd choice at best though and could be the 4th. We'll never know.
Rapoport
Big Blue Hokie : 1/13/2018 8:56 am : link
He is typically wrong on most of his takes. While it is still a very murky situation, I would believe more in the beat writers than Rapoport.
This team is heading for the abyss...
BigBlue2007 : 1/13/2018 8:57 am : link
If they chose Wilks or Schumer it tells me all I need to know. They do not know what they're doing or no one wants to come here. Matt Patricia and Josh McDaniels are the better choices. I really want Patricia. I would rather take someone under the best coach than Wilks or Schumer. Maybe we can get a winning season or two out of them, but I want this team to move into the Steelers/Pats category. A long period of sustained winning. This franchise hasn't had that since the 1980s.

I have a feeling WIlks or Schumer are going to be an epic disaster here. They will also get at least 3 years because this team will not fire the next coach in 2 years of less even if it's a disaster for fear of looking unstable. This team has been missing the playoffs since 2012 every year (minus 2011).

They have to get the right coach this time or this could set the franchise back even further.

You keep talking about Cowher on multiple threads you want to elaborate
Have a feeling this is based on the "dark horse" article

which was seemingly less about a dark horse and more about a last resort if the Giants are the last team in the HC search left standing. Seems more like a leap in logic than a scoop.

Your entitled to your opinion, but it would carry more weight if you could give some solid reasons for it, given the inflammatory nature of it.
I'm hoping for Patricia
GMen131 : 1/13/2018 9:21 am : link
and certainly some of the recent reports regarding Patricia & the Giants have been promising, but until I see Detroit move on to Vrabel I just won't be able to fully believe that we're getting Patricia. I still have a sneaky feeling that it's gonna be Shurmur (or less likely, Wilks) when all is said and done. Given the recent reports of Shurmur's personality being very "McAdoo-like", I'm not exactly thrilled by that. Certainly have an immense amount of respect for the work he's done with QB's over his career though. This whole thing is a freaking roller coaster.

Couldn't agree more. Well said. Not only do they have to get this hire right, they have to hit on the 2nd pick and the remaining picks in this draft.
Good. Glad that has been cleared up

IDK where the reports of Wilks being out came from. DG wants him. DG always wanted him. And imo he’s is what this team needs as a HC.

What’s happening, behind closed doors, is DG is still trying to sell Tisch and Mara on Wilks. Mara and Tisch want the get the guy they see as less risky in McDaniels as they have a lot of respect for Bill and the Patriots organization. If not Patricia they want Shurmur for young QB, whether it be Webb or a pick. At this point Wilks is either gonna be the Giants HC or back in Carolina as he doesnt like the other opportunities as much and would rather stay in his home state where his family is comfortable. Gettleman keeps beating his drum in meetings though. McDaniels is out.

It isn't really based on anything but a hunch just like a lot of comments here. It just feels like Schumer and Wilks are the same old same old. It feels like McAdoo 2.0. I feel like the Pats coaches are better "groomed" for this moment. They've been to Super Bowls and won them. The Panthers have had good years, but they never finished the task. Who knows how long the Vikings run is going to be? I want the smartest guy for the job and that's Patricia. The Patriots are good due to Belichick being very intelligent and a hard worker. All reports say Patricia is a hard worker and is extremely intelligent.

It isn't falling and we don't know what's going to happen. I agree. These beat writers are getting annoying with the contradictory statements they keep making. One minute is is Patricia... One minute it's McDaniels... One minute it's Wilks, Wilks is out... Wiks is in.

There is urgency here to make the right choice. The McAdoo choice really set this franchise back. We hired a coach that was married to his offense and couldn't evolve. He was horrible with personnel matters and even worse with the media. They can't make this mistake again.

Shit is all over the place right now
The_Boss : 1/13/2018 9:44 am : link
My guess is McDaniels is 100% out.

That leaves Shurmur, Patricia, and (maybe) Wilks for NYG, Arizona, and Detroit. I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of the 3.

You can make an argument of since you wanted to run this organization like it's 1988 and hire a GM first you might as well let him pick the coach. I am not in favor or Wilks, I'd rather have one of the Patriots assistance.

I respectfully, and whole heartedly, disagree. I believe both Patricia and McDaniels are gonna flame out big time as HC. Especially Patricia because history has shown time and time again that Belichick guys always burn out their first HC jobs. Another thing that everyone here needs to understand. Just because a guy can scheme doesn’t mean he can be a HC. They take two different skill sets. McDaniels and Patricia are top notch scheme guys. I do not see HC material in either of those two. Look at the HCs in the playoffs! Tomlin, Belichick, Munchak, Marrone, Quinn, Payton, and Zimmer. All of those guys are great leaders (idk much about Pederson). All of those guys can look their players in the eye and get them to push their limits. I don’t get that from either of The NE guys.

While I’ve read some nice things about Patricia but just hearing him talk and how he carries,I don’t see him as being a guys that is respected by the players. He sounds like a kid.

McAdoo was in the playoffs last year. That didn't make him a good coach. I would love Sean Payton. He is the one that got away.

Without any evidence or analysis, one could easily opine the same about the other candidates. We can all agree on the importance of getting this right. I'd also caution against the notion that of the guys in play only one could be successful.

Wilks would be fine with me.....
Simms11 : 1/13/2018 1:59 pm : link
with the right staff around him, of course. I think his inexperience as a HC and limited Coordinator experience knocked him out of the primary group. He would probably be the fall-back option if he’s agreed to keep those lines of communication open?! I think in order of priority it’s:

Patricia
Shurmur
McDaniels
Wilks (last option)

Giants could also consider a Eagles assistant if none of their top three end up here. I’m not a Schwartz fan, and he doesn’t appear to endear himself to the media either. That could be a real shitshow in NY!
It would be hilarious if Patricia chose the Lions over us.
