Foles vs. Wentz: What's Next

DeepBlueJint : 2/5/2018 2:05 pm
Foles wins the first Super Bowl for the Eagles. And he gets MVP. Wentz should be ready by the Fall. Foles has been traded away once and for a good 'price'. Ultimately, the Eagles brought him pretty much out of retirement. What a steal. And he is what, 30 or 31 years old? Does anyone think that Wentz could have done as good or better[for that matter, would have won]? I think the Eagles have a dilemma on their hands. It may become particularly acute if, for example, Wentz gets the nod to start and struggles, even a little bit. The Philly fans are merciless.

This is not, I repeat, not a Phil Simms vs. Jeff Hosteller situation. The Philly fans are six sigma from the statistical mean [in a negative way] vs. Giant fans when it comes to character, patience and to be frank, intellect.

As a Giant fan, who despises the Eagles and Philly, I cannot be more delighted to see this develop. It's the thing that drama was made for and disunity flourishes in.
Had to be a little bittersweet for Wentz last night.

No one doubts his abilities or his future with the team, but watching your backup experience that has to be a little tough. I believe Simms left the sidelines in the second half of Super Bowl XXV because of those emotions.
everybody loves....

..the backup QB.

Esp when he's helped deliver a Super Bowl.

Foles is good insurance as a backup QB. That's what I think he is, a backup QB. A lot like Case Keenum.

Philly would be wise to keep him around until they are sure Wentz is past this injury.........

I do remember Brady struggling a bit upon his return, if I remember correctly........struggling for him anyway! LOL
I'm going to catch a lot of flack here

but I think Foles is a REALLY good back up and I'll wait and see on wentz. they have a great running game with two great backs. That helps them incredibly. I think we have a defense that can stop them when everyone is healthy. But I digress. The eagles have a smart gm. they will most likely get a great dealfor Foles or just keep him(which will undoubtedly lead to a QB contro).

Just my prediction....

There is no drama and there is no dilemma here.

Carson Wentz is the guy. He was having an MVP season and the second he steps back on the football field, he's the Eagles' starter.

People can try to make this an issue all they want - it is not going to be one.

The only dilemma the Eagles have on their hands is whether or not they want to hang onto Nick Foles for the remaining year he has on his deal or look to deal him to a desperate team who needs a QB and still doesn't have one after the draft.

Odds are that the Eagles are going to go into the 2018-19 season the same exact way they went into this one.

Theres only drama in your head. Wentz is the starter and the franchise QB.
I have a horrible, likely irrational fear

that Cleveland misses out on Cousins and trades for Nick Foles, giving the Eagles the fourth overall pick. Philly then drafts Saquon Barkley to run behind their line, and dominate the division for the next decade.

Mneanwhile, Foles is out of Cleveland within the next two years.
Def irrational.

They have the 1 and 4 picks, there are a plethora of blue chip QB's. Why would they trade for Foles, just so they can pay him big money at 31 years old instead of just drafting one of the QB's??

Because it's the Browns, it's actually not that "irrational" - but they're hiring some smarter FO people now and I honestly think they will handle this draft correctly and be a better football team next year.

They're not going to be contenders, but I could see CLE having a strong offseason and winning like 6 games next year which would be a big step forward from winning one time in 32 tries.

I don't expect them to do something as stupid as dealing away 4 overall for Foles.
I get the sense Foles is OK with being a backup

Especially since he just pulled of an unbelievable feat and will be a beloved figure in Philly sports for all time. Maybe he doesn’t want to take the hits that a starter does? He’s got a young family to prioritize now. One can assume he’s well off financially as it is so making high quality backup money may not be an issue for him. He seems to be in a great spot unless of course he wants to start for a pretty lousy team going forward.
Foles played very well in RPO
mrvax : 2/6/2018 1:12 pm : link
If the Eagles are reasonably sure Wentz will be ready come September, they'd be fools not to trade him for a round 1 or 2 pick. Foles proved he can be calm, cool and collected on the biggest stage.
Foles is a not a backup though
GuzzaBlue : 2/6/2018 4:40 pm : link
and I don't think he really ever was. You can't tell me Foles is not better than 32 other QBs. He had an amazing year under chip's system (27 TD - 2 Ints). Then the next year got caught up in the whole Kelly debacle. Went to Rams and got caught up in the whole Fisher situation. I always thought he was underrated. Maybe not the player he was this past playoff run, but very underrated and definitely a serviceable starter.
