Prospect: LB Tremaine Edmunds, Virginia Tech.

TC : 2/6/2018 11:08 am
6'5", 250. Freakishly athletic, enormously productive. Described as a future All-pro. The only cavil is that he lacks football instincts. I'm wondering if he might be a someone the Giants should consider. So not having seen him, I watch his play against Miami last season on Draft Breakdown. I expect to be blown away based upon his rating.

Athletic he may be, and his production is a matter of record. But what I see is awkward athlete who doesn't look comfortable playing the game of football at all. Lacking instincts!? That's an understatement! He doesn't look as if he knows what to do, where to go or how to get there. But most concerning is he appears to dislike contact. In short, he looks like an athletic basketball player trying to play football.

Now he's just a young guy, and maybe some of this will come together, but based upon what I see, he looks like a player who may get eaten up by the NFL's precise nature and physicality. I hope he does become an All-Pro, but I sure wouldn't want to take him in the first round!

Lacks football instinks?

Sounds like a Reese guy to me. No thanks. We need solid players who know how to play the position and can make adjustments. Not just freak athletes like Flowers
Do you think the Giants
Giantsfan79 : 2/6/2018 11:11 am : link
should trade back into r1 to get him? He wont last until the 2nd round and he's not worth #2.
If, you're asking me,
TC : 2/6/2018 11:15 am : link
no, I don't want him. There are guys who can tell you a lot more about his play than me, but when I see a guy shying away from contact, particularly a defender, that's a big red flag for me.
Fairly sure they mentioned

Football players.

If what you say is true. Pass.
We haven't done so well with VT players.

He is going top 15
BigBlueDownTheShore : 2/6/2018 11:46 am : link
only way we have a shot at him is if we trade down, and acquire more picks. Some people have him going top 5.
The Combine
old man : 2/6/2018 11:56 am : link
Will boost him or expose him.
Seems the later.
Isn't he in a 3-4D there? If so he might fit that kind of D in a limited area/ limited responsibility scheme with his athleticism. Maybe.

Bingo. I think the Giants have learned their lesson.

Nope they run a 4-3 (More of a 4-2 since nickel plays so much now in college defenses). Scouts have him pegged as being able to play in either 3-4 or 4-3.
Might

be worth it, just to see Greg from LI go berserk.
Trading down sounds interesting

I would love to get an OL and a LB in round one, if that is possible.

How would the Combine expose him? There've been any number of players who blew the Combine away but sucked in the NFL.
If he does lack football instincts
mrvax : 2/6/2018 12:57 pm : link
you take a flyer on him in round 6 or 7. NOT 1 or 2.
Pass

We’ve already had our fair share of VT players with shitty instincts.
Sort of reminds me of a pre-injury Jaylon Smith,
shockeyisthebest8056 : 2/6/2018 1:43 pm : link
although not the same physical specimen or power. I have a difficult time believing Edmunds is really 250 pounds. Terrific athlete though.
The lack of football instincts has to be some sort of a joke
BigBlueDownTheShore : 2/6/2018 2:29 pm : link
because he has plenty of it. He is a 2nd generation NFL football player. His dad played in the league, and his brother is on the Saints

He is quietly good though. He's not a flashy player. He tall and lanky and accumulates good tackles, and before you know it he has a ton of production.

I saw some comparisons to Brian Urlacher from some pundits. Most think he will play in the middle and because he is so long he will be able to disrupt a ton of pass plays.
Watch the games....
chilly460 : 2/6/2018 3:06 pm : link
I watched a ton of VT games and this guy jumps out immediately, he’s the best player on the field and makes a ton of impact plays.
I think "lacks football instincts"
adamg : 2/6/2018 3:10 pm : link
is jargon that doesn't amount to much if you watch his games. He and Facyson were a formidable pair. Edmunds would be a fine WLB. I think his value is in the second or third round. I don't buy the hype that he's a top 5 player (according to some outlets). But I don't think he's a bust waiting to happen. I think he could be a really good WLB especially at his size.

I haven't seen any mock that has him falling outside of the top 15. I highly doubt we would have any shot at him.

Yeah. I don't think he's going to meet our picks' values. But I don't think he's a garbage player.

I think you are getting Tremaine mixed up with Terrell his brorther who plays FS. Fayson plays corner. Terrell will be available in later rounds.

No. I watched some VT games. With Tremaine dropping back in coverage they both made some big plays.
Most under the raider player Tech
BigBlueDownTheShore : 2/6/2018 3:40 pm : link
has coming into the draft is Tim Settle. Coming out as a redshirt sophomore. The kid is fast and huge, and their was a major production drop off when he sat out.

Draft Scout has him as a 2nd rounder. I'm wondering how much DG will focus on DL in the draft and FA. I think we need another solid guy to complement Tomlinson still at 34 DE.

He “lacks football instincts” but you don’t want to take him in the first round of the draft? Good thinking! And not worthy of a thread.

My breakdown of some film.

Good size and frame to add more weight. Seems to react well and diagnose the play although he will bite on some fakes and be overly aggressive not having proper gap responsibility. Has a little tunnel vision but uses it track ball and ball carrier well. Gets through the trash to make the play, good hand usage, takes on blockers but is also slippery to avoid them and make the play.

Looks like he has good sideline to sideline speed, good footwork and he's coordinated. Very good blitzer, determined to get to the passer or ball carrier for that matter. He's always around the ball if possible and does not give up on many plays.

Edmunds have good coverage ability on pass plays. Wraps well but lacks pop when he makes contact, he's not explosive. He needs to square up better on the ball carrier, plus add upper body strength. Due to size and speed he's scheme versatile and can play multiple positions. I see a player who is comfortable as a MIKE or SAM in either a 4-3 or 3-4. May even as a DE on passing downs with his hand in the ground as he adds size to his body, but did not do it in college.

At 6'5" and 250 pounds he plays with the coordination of a smaller man yet uses his size well. There's a lot of untapped potential, he'll be only 20 years old in may of 2018. His father was a 2 time probowl TE in Miami and his brother plays for the Saints.

If he tests well at the combine he's in first round consideration. He's not a big play maker(yet) but has potential. He has a high floor and ceiling, at worst I see an important part of a successful defense in the NFL.

If he's there when the Giants pick at 34 take him.
