NFT: Amtrak is a disaster: DC to Boston Acela disconnects 2 cars

Ten Ton Hammer : 2/6/2018 3:18 pm
An Acela from DC to Boston was disconnected from two of it's own cars in transit. No injuries

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/Amtrak-No-One-Injured-After-Cars-Separate-From-Acela-Train-472981443.html

On Sunday, an Amtrak from NY to Miami crashed into a freight train, 2 dead.

Last Wednesday, a chartered Amtrak hit a garbage truck, killing 1

December, a passenger train in Washington state derails going 50 over it's speed limit, 3 dead.

What the hell is going on over there?
Definitely a little scary

I ride Amtrak between Philly-NYC often, and have taken several longer trips too. Usually a very comfortable way to travel, but WTF is going on lately
Wasn't there

also a train crash in VA carrying congressional Republicans to some retreat? I don't know if was Amtrak or not, but the trails are literally off the rails of late.

That was the Wednesday incident, yeah. Hit a garbage truck.
Maybe everything is Amtrak's fault

But I wouldn't immediately assume that just because their name is attached.

How long it takes for a passenger train to stop depends on how fast it was going, and how many cars it has. I just Googled - an eight-car passenger train moving at 80 miles an hour takes a full mile to stop once you apply the emergency brake.
Very, very sad

Until this country invests seriously in infrastructure, it will only get worse.

Let's hope that happens and the sociopath politicians don't fuck it up.
the Crozet crash wasn't Amtrak's fault

The garbage truck was on the tracks.
Off topic

I find Amtrak to be overpriced. What a difference driving from Albany to Poughkeepsie and MTA versus riding from Renssalaer.

This,

There have been two recent Amtrak crashes with vehicles. In both cases, the vehicles tried to drive around closed crossing gates. Unsuccessfully I might add.
Every state should follow New Jersey on one thing
DennyInDenville : 2/7/2018 2:26 pm : link
And that's equipping EVERY railroad crossing with all types of lights and stuff

I'm not sure when exactly NJ did this but def the last 10 years or so and it feels safer approaching more rural train tracks without slowing down as much due to the trust in these new signals
